Pelvic angiography was performed in 12 cases of amenorrhea and hypomenorrhea which developed following curettage of abortion and in the puerperium. Six cases of similar age and obstetric history with normal menstrual cycles served as control. Pelvic angiography revealed widespread vascular occlusion of myometrial arteries, in seven of the twelve cases. These findings account for the small amount of endometrium removed on diagnostic curettage in these cases as well as the greatly reduced menstrual loss. The poor obstetric history of the cases studied may well be due to this excessive vascular damage.

A new method in which induction of mixed lymphocyte responses and cytotoxicity can be performed under identical conditions is described. This enables the investigation of the relationship between MLR and cytotoxicity. A micro method for the 51Cr release assay for cytotoxicity is described using both mitogen-induced blasts and tumors as target cells. Under the conditions used data obtained is suitable for linear regression analysis, enabling quantitative comparisons to be made.
Two forces are necessary and sufficient to produce the transformation of the newt neural plate from a hemispheric sheet of cells one cell thick to a keyhole shape. These forces are: (1) a regionally programmed shrinkage of the surface of the neural plate (accomplished by contraction of the apical surfaces of the neural plate cells and elongation of these cells perpendicular to the plate); and (2) displacement of the whole sheet caused by elongation of either the notochord or the overlying neural plate cells in the antero-posterior direction. A computer simulation and mathematical analysis ("morphodynamics"), together with experiments and observations on embryos, were used to deduce the morphogenesis of the neural plate from these forces.
Experimental cough was elicited in pentobarbital-anesthetized cats by either electrical stimulation of the superior laryngeal nerve or by mechanical stimulation of the tracheal mucosa. Intravenous administration of delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) effectively reduced the amplitude of the cough response in both these models of experimentally induced cough with ED50 values (AtD50) of 1.84 and 0.78 mg/kg, respectively. This cough suppressant activity of THC was more similar to codeine-PO4 than dextromethorphan-HBr. On the other hand, both cannabinol (CBN) and cannabidiol (CBD) were devoid of antitussive activity at doses as high as 10.0 mg/kg.

Angiographic and pathologic findings are presented and correlated in a case of renal cavernous hemangioma, and considered in relation to 3 other cases published previously. A normal angiogram does not exclude a cavernous hemangioma. Those tumors with a large arterial component may be demonstrated in the arterial phase of the angiogram. A discrete tumor may show an area of hypovascularity by displacing normal renal tissue but a diffuse cavernous hemangioma is likely to yield a normal angiogram.
1. As experimental models of reduced nephron population in man, (a) twelve men aged 15-32 years who had one kidney removed 1-13 years previously and (b) fourteen normotensive men aged 70-90 years were studied. Results were compared with those in eighteen normotensive men aged 18-28 years and eleven men aged 19-33 years with essential hypertension. 2. While the subjects followed a routine of normal diet and daily activity, measurements were made, after overnight recumbency and in the fasting state, of plasma volume and renin activity on one occasion in hospital and of blood pressure on five to fourteen occasions in the home. Blood pressure was also measured after standing for 2 min and plasma renin activity after 1 h standing, sitting or walking. Twenty-four hour urinary aldosterone excretion was also measured. 3. The measurements were repeated in the normotensive subjects and subjects in (a) and (b) above after 10 days of sodium-restricted diet (40 mmol of sodium/day). 4. The mean plasma renin activity (recumbent) in essential hypertensive subjects was higher than in normotensive subjects. In subjects of (a) and (b) above, it was lower than normotensive subjects, and was not increased by dietary sodium restriction in subjects of (a). 5. The mean aldosterone excretion level was lower in old normotensive subjects than in the other groups, and increased in each group after dietary sodium restriction. 6. Mean plasma volume/surface area was not different between the four groups and in normotensive, essential hypertensive and nephrectomized subjects but not subjects aged 70-90 years was negatively correlated with standing diastolic blood pressure.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study using the antiandrogen compound flutamide in 30 patients with benign enlargement of the prostate is reported. The potency of the compound was indicated by the large percentage of patients suffering from gynecomastia or nipple pain. Flow rate recordings are probably the most reliable and useful examination in this type of investigation, and statistical analysis of the results showed evidence of significant improvement in patients receiving flutamide. No evidence of an effect as compared to the placebo was found when the residual urine, prostate size or histological changes in prostatic biopsies were examined. Subjective effects, when carefully analyzed, provided some evidence of a preference for the flutamide group, especially in the early weeks of treatment, but the fallaciousness of subjective observations is stressed. The various problems associated with the choice and measurement of parameters to be used in this type of investigation are discussed, and the absolute necessity of proper controls and statistical analysis in such a clinical study is illustrated.

Four female dogs receiving 1.0 mg dapsone (DDS)/kg iv exhibited logarithmic decline of plasma levels of DDS with a mean half-time of disappearance (T-1/2 of 11.7 hr. No evidence of acetylation of DDS to monoacetyl DDS (MADDS) was found. An equimolar dose of MADDS was deacetylated slowly to DDS by the same dogs. The mean T 1/2 of MADDS was 6.5 hr, significantly less than that of DDS. In 2-hr plasma samples after these doses of drugs, protein-binding of DDS and MADDS averaged 71 and 84%, respectively. Tests of protein-binding of the two drugs in vitro confirmed the observations in vivo.
