[Therapy of malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma].

Up to now the results of the therapy of malignant non-Hodgkin lymphomas are not satisfactory. In order to improve these results decisively it is necessary to develop and to test therapeutic strategies on standardised diagnostic basis. On the basis of the histological classification after Kiel of the malignant non-Hodgkin lymphomas and the clinical stage subdivision of the lympho-granulomatosis after Rye (for the malignant non-Hodgkin lymphomas modified by Musshoff) in the present paper therapeutic recommendations are given which are based on proved therapeutic regimes.

Human tonsil lymphocytes in the transfer of cell-mediated immunity.

Peripheral blood lymphocytes have the ability to transfer cellular immunity. In this study, we investigated whether human tonsil lymphocytes could transfer cellular immunity. Human tonsil lymphocyte ultrafiltrates, after separation through gel filtration, showed five fractions in Sephadex-G-10, as well as four in Sephadex-G-25,4. The extracts and the fractions have characteristic biochemical as well as biological properties. The biological activity of ultrafiltrates from human tonsil lymphocytes was compared with the activity of ultrafiltrates prepared from human peripheral blood lymphocytes, for identification studies of a 'Transfer Factor' from human tonsils. Ultrafiltrates prepared from human peripheral blood lymphocytes (Ascher et al., 1976) and tested, showed similar biochemical and biological properties.

Metabolism, oxygen transport, and erythropoietin synthesis in the anemia of thermal injury.

The relationship between metabolism, oxygen transport, and anemia was assessed in burn patients. A significant negative correlation was found between erythrocyte 2,3 DPG, the major modulator of oxygen transport, and erythropoietin synthesis. Simultaneous bioassay and radioimmunoassay for erythropoietin revealed elevated values in the anemic burn patients. Elevated 2,3 DPG values during convalescence from thermal injury may remove the "anemic hypoxia" stimulus to erythropoieitn production, resulting in persistence of the anemia.

[Method for the stabilization of E-rosettes with glutaraldehyde].

A technically simple method of fixing E-rosettes is represented. Under the influence of glutaraldehyde of 0.5% the E-rosettes being themselves very fragile assume a solid form and may be firmly spread to smears. Comparative examinations made on fresh and panoptically stained preparations showed a good accordance of results. The advantages of this method consist in its easy handling, possible simultaneous or alternative application of two counting procedures and the possibility of having the test results registered in archives.

[Studies on cell-mediated immunity in patients with chronic lymphatic leukemia].

More than 100,000 variables (anamnestic, clinical, serological, radiological and histological individual findings) of 142 patients with rheumatoid arthritis underwent a factor analysis. In the calculatory statistical course by means of information densification we established a few basic variables, called factors. The interpretation of these factors showed apart from logical and pathogenetic connection also relations which gave an impetus for further clinical research.

The association of elevated plasma cortisol and early atherosclerosis as demonstrated by coronary angiography.

To study the association of plasma cortisol and coronary atherosclerosis, we elected 71 male outpatients who had coronary angiography as part of their evaluation at our facility. Forty-eight percent of the angiograms showed no evidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), 20% showed mild CAD, and 32% showed moderate to severe CAD. We found significant correlations between elevated serial morning plasma cortisols and moderate to severe coronary atherosclerosis. Using the odds ratio, we compared plasma cortisol to the major risk factors for coronary artery disease. Plasma cortisol was second only to serum cholesterol as a discriminator in our patient population between diseased and non-diseased patients. We found a significant correlation between plasma cortisol and cholesterol, blood pressure, and smoking- the three cardinal risk factors for CAD. The highest degree of correlation was found between cortisol and cholesterol. The possible significance of the association of cortisol and the major risk factors for CAD is discussed.

Angiographic findings in asymptomatic aircrewmen with electrocardiographic abnormalities.

Cardiac catheterization was used to evaluate 298 asymptomatic, apparently healthy aircrewmen with electrocardiographic abnormalities. These men were identified from annual electrocardiograms and exercise tests used to screen for latent heart disease. Data from 27 additional symptomatic aircrewmen who underwent cardiac catheterization because of mild probable angina pectoris are also included. The men were grouped according to major reason for cardiac catheterization. The order of groups by increasing prevalence of coronary artery disease was as follows: abnormal treadmill test (labile lead only), supraventricular tachycardia, right bundle branch block, left bundle branch block, abnormal treadmill test, ventricular irritability, probable infarct and angina. Approximately 60 percent of the men were completely free of angiographic coronary artery disease. Risk factors and other possible causes for the electrocardiographic abnormalities are discussed. The electrocardiographic abnormalities studied have a poorer predictive value for coronary artery disease in asymptomatic apparently healthy men than in a hospital or clinic population.

[Unusual joint complications in sickle cell anemia].

It is reported on the casuistics of a 23-year-old Lebanese who since his eighth year suffered from joint swellings and occasional attacks of jaundice. By the proof of false forms of erythrocytes and by the haemoglobin electrophoresis a homozygous sickle cell disease could be ascertained. Peculiarities of the clinical picture were among others changes of the bones of high degree (osteolyses of vertebral bodies, of the head of the right humerus and the heads of the two femurs) was well as of the knee-joints in form of ankyloses.

[Malignant erythroblastosis].

In form of a survey the clinical picture of the malignant erythroblastosis is described. Apart from notes concerning the etiology and pathogenesis symptomatology and differential diagnosis are of special importance. The most important morphological and cytochemical changes are demonstrated with the help of micropictures.
