Responses of different doses of prostaglandin F(2) alpha on estrus induction, fertility and progesterone levels in subestrous buffaloes.

Responses of different doses of PGF(2) alpha (Lutalyse) on estrus induction, fertility, and progesterone levels were studied in buffaloes. Of the total 70 subestrous buffaloes, 71.0 percent (50) exhibited estrus and 44.0 percent (22) conceived to induced estrus with different doses of PGF(2) alpha. Serum progesterone levels were variable before treatment of PGF(2) alpha in subestrous buffaloes and ranged from 0.60 to 4.90 ng/ml. An abrupt decrease in progesterone levels was observed within 24 hours of treatment with 30 mg or 5.0 mg PGF(2) alpha given intramuscularly or by intrauterine fusion, respectively. Serum progesterone levels further decreased and were minimum or similar to those seen in spontaneous estrus (/ 0.5ng/ml) on day 2 to 5 or 6 after PGF(2) alpha treatment. Progesterone patterns further revealed that, in most of the buffaloes, corpora lutea were formed and were functional after the treatment. With 2.5 mg of PGF(2) alpha administered into the uterus, morphological regression of corpus luteum and progesterone were not adequate to induce estrus and ovulation.

In vivo pelvimetry in buffaloes (Bos bubalus).

The comparison of external and internal, pelvimetry measurement was performed on 79, buffalo heifers, and a high, positive correlation (r=0.90) between the two methods was revealed. The pelvic area of the buffalo heifers increased progressively with the advancing age and with the increase in body weight. The convenience with which external pelvimetry could be performed, the simplicity of the equipment which was used and the accuracy of the method would certainly favor the application of external pelvimetry for routine use.

Effect of hydroxy acids on hypercholesterolaemia in rats.

Hydroxy acids (aliphatic and aromatic) which are present in legumes were added as supplements to a diet causing hypercholesterolaemia in rats. Ferulic, p-coumaric, phytic and uronic acids showed hypolipidemic activity while vanillic, caffeic and cinnamic acids did not. The trace mineral content of serum was not affected by these acids.

Induction of estrus in anestrous cows treated with 'Fertivet'.

The effectiveness of 'Fertivet' (180 mg. Cisclomiphene Citrate and 120 mg. Transclomiphene citrate mixture) in the induction of estrus and fertility was tested on sixteen anestrous cows. Of all the animals treated 14 (97.5%) expressed estrus and 8 (57.1%) conceived. Among the three breeds of cows treated, 5 out of 5 Brown Swiss, 4 out of 5 Jersey cross breeds and 5 out of 6 Sahiwal (Zebu) cows expressed estrus. These results indicate the usefulness of 'Fertivet' in the induction of fertile estrus in cows.

Glucose phosphate isomerase isoenzyme patterns in bovine lymphoblastoid cell lines infected with Theileria annulata and T parva, with an improved enzyme visualisation method using meldola blue.

Five strains of Theileria annulata from three geographically different areas and one strain of T parva were grown in bovine lymphoblastoid cell lines. Lysates of the parasitised cells were examined by thin layer starch gel electrophoresis for multiple forms of the enzyme glucose phosphate isomerase. A reported difference between the glucose phosphate isomerase isoenzyme patterns of T annulata and T parva was confirmed. Cultures of one strain of T annulata grown in cells derived from four different cattle showed similar host and parasite isoenzyme patterns. Two strains of T annulata and one strain of T parva grown in lymphoid cells derived from the same animal showed identical host cell isoenzyme patterns whereas the isoenzyme pattern associated with each parasite was different. Strains of T annulata from different geographical areas showed major differences in their isoenzyme patterns, but no differences were detected between strains from the same geographical area. Meldola blue was found to be superior to phenazine methosulphate as an intermediate electron acceptor in the visualisation of enzyme activity.

Isoflavones and hypercholesterolemia in rats.

Isoflavones isolated from three commonly used pulses such as Bengalgram (Cicer arietinum), greengram (Phaseolus aureus) and blackgram (Phaseolus mungo) and p-coumaric acid were supplemented to hypercholesterolemia-inducing diet of rats. Among isoflavones, Biochanin A and Formononetin showed hypolipidemic activity but diadzein did not; p-coumaric acid also produced a significant reduction in serum cholesterol levels.

Effect of various isoflavones on lipid levels in triton-treated rats.

The isoflavone content of some commonly used legumes was determined. In Triton-WR1339-induced hyperlipidemia in male albino rats, biochanin A, formononetin and pratensein showed hypolipidemic activity, while diadzein did not, when these isoflavones were administered as individual compounds by gastric intubation.
