Sialo proteins and phosphatases in estrual cervical mucus of fertile and repeat breeder buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis ).

Concentrations of sialic acid and protein and activities of acid phosphatase (ACP) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) were determined in estrual cervical mucus of fertile and repeat breeder buffaloes during late estrus. Significantly (P < 0.01) higher concentrations of sialic acid and ACP and AKP activities were observed in fertile buffaloes as compared with repeat breeder buffaloes. However, differences were nonsignificant in protein content between fertile and repeat breeder buffaloes, albeit protein concentration was higher in fertile buffaloes. The significance of sialoproteins and phosphatases in fertility has been clarified.

Treatment of summer anestrous buffalo (bubalus bubalis) with progesterone releasing intravaginal device plus pregnant mare serum go nadotropin.

Three experiments were conducted to treat forty-two summer-anestrous buffalo at three different villages. In all the experiments animals were randomly divided into two groups. One group was treated with a progesterone releasing intravaginal device (PRID) plus 800 IU pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG) at the time of PRID removal. The second group was retained as untreated control animals. All the treated animals were clinically examined and inseminated twice 48 and 72 h post treatment. Ovulation and fertility rates at induced estrus were 88, 90 and 100% and 50, 60 and 50% during Experiments I, II and III, respectively. None of the controls exhibited estrus during the course of the study.

First-marriage decrement tables, for males and females in Ontario, Canada, 1971-1981.

This article presents an analysis of first-marriage decrement tables for males and females in Ontario, Canada, for 1971, 1976, and 1981. The analysis indicates that along with the age at 1st marriage, the age range between 2 sexes has also increased. An increasing number of Ontarians are remaining never-married, and the prospect of eventually getting married has also declined. The paper also discusses social and economic implications of these changes in the nuptiality patterns of Ontario.

Rice bran oil and hypocholesterolemia in rats.

Rats fed rice bran oil at 10% level for a period of eight weeks showed significantly lower levels of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol, both on cholesterol-containing and cholesterol-free diets. High density lipoprotein cholesterol was increased but triglyceride showed a decrease that was not statistically significant. Liver cholesterol and liver triglycerides were also reduced. Fecal excretion of neutral sterols and bile acids was increased after ingestion of rice bran oil.

Studies on serum progesterone levels in relation to occurrence of uterine torsion in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis ).

Serum samples from 32 buffaloes suffering from uterine torsion at approximately the completion of the gestation period were analyzed for progesterone concentrations by radioimmunoassay. Fifteen buffaloes had progesterone concentrations of more than 1.0 ng/ml (1.65 +/- 0.13 ng/ml; 1.1 to 2.8 ng/ml), while the serum progesterone concentrations of the remaining 17 buffaloes were below 1.0 ng/ml (599 +/- 59 pg/ml; 200 to 900 pg/ml). The occurrence of uterine torsion was associated with labour and/or abdominal pain around the expected time of parturition at the completion of the gestation period. High progesterone concentrations at labour in cases of torsion in almost half of the buffaloes may suggest that there were instances of premature labour resulting from an impaired hormonal milieu. Disturbances in the onset of labour owing to hormonal imbalance as evidenced by high progesterone levels may also contribute to the causation of uterine torsion. Cases of uterine torsion having low progesterone values are also discussed in this study.

Dystocia due to urinary bladder carcinoma in two water buffaloes (bubalus bubalis) - Clinical case report.

Two buffaloes with full-term pregnancy suffered from dystocia because the cervix did not dilate in spite of strong labour pains and other parturition signs shown by each animal. The urinary bladder, cervix, vagina and surrounding area were very firm. Dead, emphysemated fetuses were removed by caesarean in each case and anuria was also noticed. One buffalo died and the other was euthanised after surgery because it did not improve. The post-mortem examinations revealed transitional cell carcinoma of urinary bladder infiltrating the cervix, vagina and surrounding area in each case.

Body size and pelvic area relationships at puberty and two-month-pregnancy in buffalo - heifers.

The relationships among body weight, height at hook bone, height at pin bone, hip width, rump length, pin width and pelvic area were estimated in puberal (n=50) and two-month pregnant (n=35) Murrah buffalo-heifers. In both types, significant correlations (P angle0.10) existed among all measurements studied. Averages for pelvic area at puberty and two-month pregnancy were 285.05 and 302.00 sq. cm, respectively. At the time of parturition, no buffalo heifer exhibited dystocia due to narrow pelvic opening.

Bio-histopathological studies of endometrium in repeat breeding buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis).

A total of 24 uterine biopsies were successfully obtained from 40 repeat-breeding buffaloes. The endometrium of 15 buffaloes showed marked neutrophilic infiltration in the epithelium, stroma and uterine glands. In some cases, lymphocyte and plasma cell infiltration, cystic dilatation of the glands and periglandular fibrosis indicated chronicity of the endometritis. Most of the animals (85.0%) had uterine cultures positive for Streptococci, Staphylococci, Gram positive variable cocci, Gram negative bacilli, Anthracoids, and Gram positive bacilli with a predominance of Corynebacteria. With the treatment based on in vitro drug sensitivity tests, 57.1% repeat-breeding buffaloes conceived.
