[Dynamic tests of the placental efficiency (author's transl)].

The paper presents a cycle of clinical investigations concerning an early detection of placental insufficiency states. It has been found that in cases of placental changes of a decreased function type, the transport of atropine through the placenta becomes difficult or inhibited, which is manifested by a decrease or lack of a reaction from the fetal side. In cases of the positive test, the fetus responds with tachycardia following atropine administration, which testifies to the normal atropine transport from mother to fetus and to the normal placental function. It has been pointed out that owing to its simple principle, atropine test should find a wide application in obstetric clinic in detecting an early placental insufficiency.

Investigations into the spontaneous contractile activity of isolated human uterine arteries in vitro.

Uterine artery strips and myometrium from the same uterus were placed in the same water bath and their rates of contractile activity were registered simultaneously. Isolated strips of uterine arteries showed spontaneous contractile activity--a phenomenon especially marked in the secretory phase of the cycle. In the proliferative phase spontaneous contractions of blood vessels, characterized by low intensity and a frequency of three contractions in 10 minutes, were seen. In the secretory phase the contractions were of lesser intensity and higher frequency. The rhythm of contractions of the myometrial vessels was markedly different from the spontaneous activity of the myometrial strips. In discussion of the results, special attention has been paid to the role of spontaneous contractility of myometrial vessels in the contractile activity of the whole uterus.

Influence of prostaglandins F2alpha and E1 on vaginal contractility.

Sixty strips of vaginal wall obtained from 20 nonpregnant women (12 in the proliferative phase and 8 in the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle) were studied in vitro. Described and illustrated are 1) their spontaneous contractility, 2) enhancement of this by prostaglandin F2alpha, epinephrine, and norepinephrine, and 3) de novo induction of contractions by these agents. Contractility was inhibited and suppressed by prostaglandin E1, and after such suppression of norepinephrine-induced contractions they could not thereafter be reestablished by norepinephrine. The physiologic implications of these findings for the processes of reproduction are discussed.

[Dependence of the contractility of the non-pregnant human uterus from the perfusion pressure of the vascular bed during the menstrual cycle].

The relation between the contractile activity of the isolated non-pregnant human uterus and the perfusion pressure of its vascular bed has been investigated. Experiments have been carried out on 35 isolated human uteri obtained at operations from various phases of the cycle. It has been found that the contractile activity of the non-pregnant human uterus is characterised by the lack of contraction coordination in the course of the sexual cycle with particular attention to this property in the midcycle. Regularly coordinated contractions have been recorded in the period of menstrual bleeding only. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that there is a close relation between the quality of the contractile activity and perfusion pressure in the vascular bed of the isolated human uterus, i.e. contractions with a small amplitude (4 to 8 mmHg) have as a rule no influence on the perfusion pressure whereas contractions with a higher amplitude (over 15 mHg) influence very distinctly the perfusion pressure in the vascular bed of the isolated human uterus. Obtained results have been discussed with reference to the physiology of the contractile activity basic processes of the nonpregnant human uterus.
