There is a growing evidence that the clinical distinction of schizophrenia from mania should be based on a multidimensional approach rather than on the presence of characteristic symptoms. In-patient community group meetings are rarely appreciated as one source of such differential diagnostic data. Some patients are observed to manifest group behaviour which belies the schizophrenic diagnoses with which they re-enter the hospital. Three illustrative cases are presented in which patients so identified were successfully treated with lithium carbonate alone. The clinical and theoretical implications of this phenomenon are discussed.

Catatonia is a syndrome that is often considered as a subtype of schizophrenia, although studies have shown that it is most often associated with affective disorders. There are also many medical causes of catatonia. A case is presented in which glutethimide withdrawal seems the most likely explanation for catatonic symptoms.

One hundred and two right-handed judges viewed a series of 16 frontally displayed moving faces. They reported which side of each face appeared to move more when the faces were seen (a) speaking and (b) performing face exercise (pulling faces). The left-of-the face was judged more mobile than the right at pulling faces, while there was no asymmetry in the judged movement of the speaking face. Viewing conditions (mirror-reversed/normal orientation) affected judgments of exercising faces, but not of speaking faces. There was a leftward bias of judgements of exercising faces, so that a greater left preference when viewing mirror-reversed rather than normally oriented faces. These results are interpreted with reference to explanations of asymmetries in facial expression and interpretation involving notions of cerebral lateralization.
Short term (48 h) administration in vivo of either T4 or T4, but not the biologically inactive D-isomer of T3, was associated with a decrease in basal glycogen phosphorylase alpha activity and an increase in phosphorylase alpha phosphatase activity of rat hepatocytes. This influence of thyroid hormones on hepatic phosphorylase alpha and phosphorylase phosphatase activities was shown to be dose dependent. As little as 0.0025 mg T3/kg BW administered in vivo at 48, 24, and 3 h before liver excision increased the phosphatase activity by 20%. The administration of 0.25 mg T3/kg BW on the same schedule increased the phosphatase activity by nearly 100%.
We report here the primary structure of an immunoglobulin heavy chain synthesized by ICR 16, a variant of the MPC 11 mouse myeloma cell line. The ICR 16 heavy chain is a gamma 2b-gamma 2a hybrid, consisting of the CH1 domain of gamma 2b and the hinge, CH2 and CH3 domains of gamma 2a subclasses. The genetic mechanism by which ICR 16 occurred may be recombination, based on homologies in both coding and intervening sequences in gamma 2b and gamma 2a constant region genes. Although the Fc fragment of ICR 16 is completely gamma 2a-like and has been shown to bind to gamma 2a Fc receptors on mouse macrophages, the intact H2L2 molecules is unable to do so. Such an observation underscores the crucial role that conformation may play in the ability of immunoglobulins to carry out biologic functions.

A reproducible model of severe herpetic interstitial keratitis was developed by injecting live herpes simplex virus type 2 intrastromally into the corneas of presensitized rabbits. Herpes-infected corneas showed significantly more stromal infiltration and vascularization, iritis, conjunctivitis, and epithelial disease than the control corneas injected with cell supernatant without virus. Levels of total collagenase detected in the culture media of the herpes-infected corneas were high and were similar to those observed previously in alkali-burned rabbit corneas. Unlike alkali-burned corneas, the herpes-infected corneas showed much more of the enzyme in the latent form during the first two days of culture.
