Influence of growth temperature on glucose metabolism of a psychotrophic strain of Bacillus cereus.

The influence of temperature on glucose metabolism of a psychotrophic strain of Bacillus cereus was investigated. The pH of the growth medium and spore-forming frequencies of B. cereus varied when grown at 32, 20, or 7 C. Radiorespirometric analyses revealed that vegetative cells of B. cereus metabolized glucose by simultaneous operation of the Embden-Meyerhof-Parnas pathway and the pentose phosphate pathway. As the growth temperature decreased, glucose was metabolized with increased participation of the pentose phosphate pathway. The shift of cells grown at a higher temperature to a lower temperature increased the relative participation of the pentose phosphate pathway, whereas the shift of cells grown at low temperatures to a higher temperature had the opposite effect. Cells of late logarithmic phase grown at 20 and 7 C oxidized acetate by the tricarboxylic acid cycle reaction. However, cells grown at 32 C failed to oxidize acetate to CO2 to any appreciable extent. The extracellular products resulting from the metabolism of glucose decreased as the growth temperature was lowered. Organic acids were the major extracellular products of cultures grown at 32 and 20 C. Acetic acid, lactic acid, and pyruvic acid together accounted for 86.1 and 78.9% of extracellular radioactivity, respectively, at the two temperatures. The relative ratio of these three acids varied between the temperatures. Little or no acid accumulated at 7 C.

"Practical suggestions on facial plastic surgery--how I do it.".

For many years, we have used 6-0 catgut for closure of epithelial and superficial dermal wound edges. Only when absolutely necessary do we use deeper dermal or subcutaneous sutures. The superficial suturing is supplemented with antitension skin taping. Details of the technique are presented and reasons why satisfactory results occur are postulated. The recommended techniques have been used in closure of wounds on the face and body. It is emphasized that only certain catgut and antitension taping products work well.

Growth and morphology of Streptococcus bovis and of mixed rumen bacteria in the presence of aflatoxin B1, in vitro.

The metabolism of aflatoxin B1 to other fluorescent compounds was studied in rumen organisms. No fluorescent metabolites were found by chromatographic procedures which separate aflatoxin B1 from them. Rumen bacteria (mixtures and Streptococcus bovis) incubated with aflatoxin B1 grew in long chains whereas cells in control cultures were mainly doublets with some short chains. Growth of mixed rumen bacteria and Streptococcus bovis cultures was inhibited by aflatoxin B1 as measured by change in optical density and by incorporation of [carbon-14] adenine into nucleic acids.

Stress in air traffic controllers: effects of ARTS-III.

Physiological, biochemical, and psychological assessments of stress in air traffic controllers were made at Los Angeles (LAX) and Oakland (OAK) Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facilities before and after installation of Automated Radar Terminal Systems-III (ARTS-III). Heart rates of controllers on duty or at rest scarcely changed from before to after ARTS-III installation. Total stress increased at both TRACONs, and the increase was entirely due to elevated catecholamine excretion. Steroid excretion was significantly reduced at both facilities after ARTS-III had no appreciable effect on work-related anxiety levels of controllers. The post-ARTS-III A-State means for both facilities were not significantly elevated. A-Trait was unchanged at LAX but decreased significantly at OAK. Assessments of A-State showed significant work-related increments but tended to be low. There were no correlations between anxiety and physiological data.

Effects of single and multiple dose LSD on endogenous levels of brain tyrosine and catecholamines.

The effects on brain catecholamines of seven daily doses of d-LSD 520 mug/kg injected i.p. to Sprague-Dawley rats on a tolerance dosage schedule (L X 7) were compared with the effects of a single dose of LSD (L X 1) 520 mug/kg or 1040 mug/kg, over a 90 min time course. Compared to saline controls, after a single dose of 520 mug/kg LSD, there was a significant decrease in brain norepinephrine at 30 to 60 min, a rise in dopamine at 60 min, and a small rise in brain tyrosine at early time points followed by significant decline from control levels after 60 min. The effects of a single dose of 1040 mug/kg LSD were similar to the 520 mug/kg dose but were greater in both magnitude and duration of the brain catecholamine changes. After a tolerance dosage schedule there were significant changes in the response of brain catecholamines to 520 mug/kg LSD. The rise in brain dopamine at 60 min was abolished, brain tyrosine was uniformly below both saline and L times 1 animals, and brain norepinephrine returned to control levels slightly faster.

Alcohol's effect on some formal aspects of verbal social communication.

The effects of alcohol on formal aspects of social communication were studied by scoring transcripts of verbal discussions between dyads in alcohol and placebo sessions. At a low dose (3.83 to 1.0 ml/kg), alcohol significantly (P Less than .01) increased the amount of and overlap in communications, and tended to decrease subjects' acknowledgement of their partners' statements. At a high dose (1.5 ml/kg), the rate of overlap in speech was additionally increased, but there was a leveling off or reversal of the drug's effect on amount of communication. The subjects' blood alcohol levels were not related to the drug's effect.

Vocational interests of air traffic control personnel.

The interest patterns of air traffic controllers were surveyed for the purposes of a) determining the interests of journeyman controllers, b) determining the relationships of controller interests to those of other occupational groups, c) devising an interest scale for air traffic work, and d) developing a measure for guidance for selection of air traffic specialtites (Terminal, En Route, Flight Service). A total of 787 male controllers from Terminal, En Route, and FSS facilities completed the Strong Vocational Interest Blank, a measure of interest patterns. It was found that none of the existing occupational scales clearly reflected the interest patterns of controllers. An air traffic controller scale was devised which distinguished the air traffic controllers from men in general and from men in other occupations. There were no substantial differences between the interest patterns for the three options; however, it was found that dissatisfied controllers scored lower on the overall air traffic controller scale than did satisfied controllers.

Behavioral supersensitivity to apomorphine and amphetamine after chronic high dose haloperidol treatment.

Rats administered chronic haloperidol (5 mg/cc) for 2 months exhibited stereotyped gnawing during chronic haloperidol treatment, and after withdrawal from haloperidol, showed significantly greater stereotyped behavior induced by apomorphine or L-amphetamine compared to saline controls. Chronic administration of benztropine mesylate concomitantly with haloperidol reduced the effects of chronic haloperidol on drug induced stereotyped behavior during the withdrawal period.
