In a representative sample of Basle eight grade students (14-16 years) blood pressure measurements were correlated with smoking habits. Mean pressure was 122 68 mm Hg for 358 boys and 118/68 mm Hg for 387 girls (p 0,005). 40 of the boys (11%) and 56 of the girls (14%) reported themselves as smoking one or more cigarettes daily. They were found to have lower systolic and diastolic pressure values than non-smokers. These results confirm findings in adults, where smoking was reported to have an inhibiting effect on blood pressure rise in the case of weight gain.
An analysis of all preventive services provided by practicing physicians and various agencies is presented. Costs for these services amount to 1,4% of the cantonal outlays for health.
Serum lipids of a representative sample of eighth grade Basle school children were found practically all within normal range and hardly affected by the frequency of regular meals, milk and fat. The prospective significance of eating habits seems more important than the immediate effect on blood lipid levels.
Frequency of regular meals, milk and fat consumption were found negatively correlated with triceps skinfold and body mass index in a representative sample of eight grade Basle School Children confirming an interaction of eating habits and anthropometric measurements.
In a representative sample of Basle school children a good correlation between the alcohol consumption of parents, elder siblings and 14-15 year old schoolchildren was confirmed. Neither frequency nor quantity of alcohol consumption was dependent on family structure in this age group.
Results of the Basle-Adolescents Study confirmed an important effect of parent smoking and even more of elder sibling smoking on cigarette consumption of adolescents. Broken home situation and employment of mother were other important determinants the effect of which can, however, be partially explained by a higher frequency of smoking mothers.
Bad eating habits, e.g. no regular breakfast, rarer consumption of fruits and milk, are associated with higher frequency of cigarette smoking in adolescence. Probably this is due to a common factor most likely to be found in the personality of the adolescent and its determinants.
Different indices are used to evaluate the stability of answers referring to eating habits, collected in an interval of 6 months. The stability is comparable to answers to questions referring to participation in various groups. Both are strongly dependent on the frequency of the characteristic measured.

In a representative sample of Basle 8th grade students (165 boys and 237 girls) born in 1960, 23 MMPI scales were compared to height and triceps skinfold thikness. No correlation was found among boys; in girls height showed a positive, skinfold thickness a negative correlation with the social rating of a number of scales.
The relation between sociodemographic characteristics and structure of personality (MMPI) was analyzed using the results of the "Basle Adolescence Study". Type of housing, family structure, employment of the mother and number of working hours of the father produced statistically significant differences, which, however, were small in respect to the general variability of the structure of personality.
Programme and course of the Basle Kindergarten Study are presented. This study has to describe and analyse the somatic and psychosocial development of children of foreign workers, of people from other swiss cantons and of locals to get ideas referred to prevention.
