The development of pharmacotherapy is an important factor for the relatively high level of health in our population. Epidemiologic effects of drugs are difficult to measure but can be recognized, e.g., in the field of antihypertensive and antidepressive treatments. Important for public health are further the epidemiological and statistical methods, the knowledge of various functions of the human organism and some administrative procedures which have been elaborated as a collateral effect of the development of pharmacotherapy.
The results of the Basle Adolescents-Study suggest that the beginning of smoking is associated with moderately lower blood pressure (3-4 mmHg). However, with continuing tobacco consumption differences become smaller again.
Results of a first phase of follow-up in the population of the "Basle Adolescents Study" indicate that average blood pressure increased more in boys than in girls, blood lipids remained at the same level. Boys cought up with girls as far as cigarette smoking is concerned.
The organisation of the Basle Family Study and preliminary results outlining the data analysis are presented. The study investigates in 500 families the familial influence on risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. In addition the distribution of hemostatic variables is studied. Analysis of the data according to age, sex and intrafamilial relations in 211 families demonstrate the influence of the mother on the development of the life style of the children.
There is much lip service but little practical every day behavior aiming at prevention. Instructors and practitioners or health promotion and health protection experience much less recognition than the healers of diseases. Infrastructure and training for prevention let much to be desired. Only a political action on a higher level can give preventive measures the weight they deserve. Economic mechanisms seem the most appropriate way of regulation.
Economic mechanisms are needed to guarantee that longterm needs are not forgotten over short term benefits and desires. In traffic, variable costs (cost per mile) should be increased relative to fixed costs, traffic education should be supported and--where needed--fines for undesirable behavior should be introduced. Toxic substances should be taxed. As far as tobacco and alcohol consumption is concerned, abstinence or temperance should be rewarded. In medical care and medical education, prevention should be promoted by increased financial support.

The average blood pressure measured in a representative sample of 8th grade juveniles (14-16 years) was 120/70 mm Hg. Mean systolic pressure was 5 mm Hg higher in boys. The 90th percentile was 135/80 mm Hg for both sexes. Systolic and diastolic pressure rose with increasing body weight. Correlation with height was less obvious. Difference in weight could not account for all the sex difference in blood pressure. Association of sexual maturation with higher blood pressure values was more pronounced in boys.
