[Infantile digestive campylobacteriosis. Two case studies (author's transl)].

The role played by Campylobacter jejuni in the origin of infantile bacterial gastroenteritis is important. Diarrhea, often bloody, is dysentery-like. Fever, abdominal pain and vomiting are rarely lacking. Dehydration is exceptional. Spontaneous recovery occurs in about ten days. Campylobacter jejuni is a Gram-negative, oxidase-positive, microaerophilic bacillus. The often typical results of direct morphological examination of the stools, special culture and isolation techniques, the erythromycine sensitivity of the germ, clearly define campylobacteriosis. Its epidemiology is still being investigated.

[Epstein-Barr virus associated Burkitt's lymphoma in a French child (author's transl)].

Pathologic diagnosis of malignant lymphoma, Burkitt type, was made in a 12 year old child with an abdominal tumour. The association of this lymphoma with Epstein-Barr virus was done based on the detection of Epstein-Barr viral markers within the tumour cells, as well as on the patient's serology. To our knowledge, it is the first time that the association between Burkitt's lymphoma and Epstein-Barr virus, which is frequent in Africa, is reported in a Caucasian French.

[Chronic active hepatitis with a favorable course, after fulminant hepatitis].

The case reported here is that of a girl with presumably viral non A, non B, acute hepatitis with a very unusual course. Fulminant hepatitis with submassive and bridging hepatic necrosis and a 17-day coma began during the 7th week of evolution. Prolonged chronic active hepatitis followed. Treatment was initiated 6 months after the beginning of the affection and was maintained for more than 2 years, with an apparent cure persisting after follow-up period of 6 months; fibrous scars were the only abnormalities demonstrable on histologic examination of liver biopsy. It is possible that such type of fulminant hepatitis with unusual course will become more frequent, as survival of the initial acute episode increase.

Case report: a preterm infant with an extradural myxopapillary ependymoma component of a teratoma and high levels of alpha-fetoprotein.

The sacrococcygeal region may be the origin of germinal tumors, of paragangliomas, and, rarely, of extradural myxopapillary ependymomas (MPE) in the newborn and child. A case is presented of a preterm child with an abdominal tumor, originating from the precoccygeal area, that turned out to be a teratoma with a component of an MPE. The high levels of alpha-fetoprotein in this preterm baby were initially misleadingly interpreted as a tumoral marker. The differential diagnosis and the difficulties in interpreting tumoral markers in infants are discussed.

Nucleolar organizer regions in congenital mesoblastic nephroma.

A review of 78 renal tumors in patients under 6 months of age revealed 35 congenital mesoblastic nephromas (CMNs). Based on cellular criteria, 14 were classified as classical, 4 as partly cellular, and 17 as cellular CMN. The mean ages were 24, 11, and 70 days, respectively. There were 13 intrarenal tumors (stage I) but 9 classical, 3 partly cellular, and 5 cellular CMNs extended to the perirenal fat (stage II) and 5 cellular tumors ruptured (stage III). In order to assess cellular proliferative activity, silver staining of nucleolar organizer region (Ag-NOR) proteins was performed on 19 CMNs. The number of Ag-NOR dots per cell was significantly lower in classical and partly cellular CMN than in cellular CMN, whatever the stage (P < .01). Within the cellular CMNs, the mean number of Ag-NOR dots was statistically higher in the single case that recurred with fatal outcome (P < .02). Counting of Ag-NOR dots appears to be a reproducible method for evaluating the biologic potential of CMNs. The number of Ag-NOR dots, DNA content measurements, the histological subclassification, and the presence or absence of tumor at the surgical margins may be useful features in selecting those patients who will benefit from further treatment after nephrectomy.

[Meningioma of the scalp. Apropos of a case].

The authors report a case of scalp meningioma in a five-months old baby. The mass was removed totally and the following neuroradiological studies proved the absence of an intracranial meningioma. They present the histogenesis of the meningioma and Lopez's classification.

[Amyloidosis following juvenile chronic arthritis in a 3-year-old child].

A case of amyloidosis revealed by a nephrotic syndrome in a 3 years old girl with juvenile chronic arthritis is reported. The child died from this amyloidosis at the age of 4 years. The main biochemical, clinical and therapeutics aspects of this form of secondary amyloidosis (amyloidosis AA) are discussed.

[Adenomatoid malformation of the lung. A study on thirteen observations (author's transl)].

The authors report thirteen observations of CAM of mixed solid and cystic type. They point out that besides a classic form of neonatal diagnosis might be a form late revealed in infancy or adolescence, of possible appearing after the embryonic period. This late form could be more localized. Only histologic examination can confirm the diagnosis whose fundamental criteria is the proliferation of bronchiolar or bronchiole-like structures.
