A new broth-microdilution method for testing metal ion resistance was designed in order to circumvent the formation of insoluble complexes between cations and compounds of the test medium. High-level cefotaxime resistant K. pneumoniae isolates tested by this procedure proved to be susceptible to Cd, Hg and Zn but resistant to Pb, Mo and W. The metal ion resistance was not linked to the beta-lactam resistance gene.

Changes of the age-specific and age-standardized incidence of malignant neoplasms in the GDR between 1962 and 1980 are investigated. A series of cancer localisation has increased in which case improved diagnostics and increased risk are discussed as causes (cancer of colon and rectum, of the pancreas, the breast and the testicle). The epidemics of bronchial cancer has apparently reached its climax, the admission rates stagnate. Cancer of the stomach and recently also cancer of the gallbladder and the extrahepatic bile ducts decrease in their frequency.

Examples of classical Ewing's tumors ("Ewing's sarcomas") of both skeletal and extraskeletal locations were analyzed for the expression of intermediate filament (IF) and cell junction proteins, with the use of immunofluorescence and immunoelectron microscopy as well as gel electrophoresis. In all 11 tumors examined vimentin filaments were abundant. A type of plaque-bearing small cell junction, which is common in these tumors but difficult to classify by morphologic criteria, was identified by antibodies to desmoplakins as true desmosomes. These were found in all cases, although in a very variable proportion of cells. Some of these junctions were associated with vimentin IFs. In addition, 9 of the cases examined showed scattered or clustered cells expressing the simple-epithelium type cytokeratins 8 and 18. Moreover, 3 cases displayed dispersed or clustered cells producing neurofilaments. The value of these observations, notably the cell type heterogeneity, for the diagnosis of tumors of this group is discussed. The results further indicate that Ewing's tumors are derived from a primitive, pluripotential cell that may differentiate, in variable proportions, into cells with mesenchymal, epithelial, and, more rarely, even neural features, suggesting that this tumor should be regarded as a blastoma, rather than as a true sarcoma.
The serological diagnosis of Nephropathia epidemica (NE), the mild European type of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), was studied by means of an indirect immunofluorescent antibody technique (IFAT) in a large outbreak in Finland (morbidity 1.4/1000 population). Acetone-fixed sections of lung of bank voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) naturally infected with Puumala virus served as antigen. Altogether 65 patients were followed serologically for up to 20 months. Serological results obtained by NE-IFAT were compared with the clinical diagnosis of NE. Of the 41 clinically accepted NE cases 40 were serologically positive. Use of the NE-IFAT serological test allowed the diagnosis to be made in seven patients for whom the clinical data were not sufficient for diagnosing NE. The antibody response in NE often appears to be slower than that against Hantaan virus. Practical recommendations are given for the clinical and serological diagnosis of the milder forms of HFRS.
The stroma of 18 human colon carcinomas was studied with regard to the occurrence of myofibroblasts. In addition, we tried to determine if there was any relationship between myofibroblasts and other stromal responses to tumor growth, e.g. immunologic inflammatory reactions or activation of vascular structures. We found myofibroblasts in 13 carcinomas, although only sporadically in 6 of them. In 5 carcinomas these cells were absent. The number of myofibroblasts showed an inverse relation to the quantity of inflammatory cells (mainly lymphocytes, plasma cells and histiocytes). A variable amount of activated vascular structures could be seen in all cases. In 5 tumors many activated vessels showed a multilayered basement membrane. The electron microscopic findings led to the conclusions that myofibroblast proliferation and immunologic inflammation are not positively correlated with each other and that vascular activation does not parallel myofibroblast induction. The significance of the individual components for tumor prognosis is briefly discussed and the need for further work to clarify the role and mode of interaction of the different factors in tumor-induced stromal response is emphasized.

This is an analysis of the incidence and mortality of malignant neoplasms of the urinary system and the male sexual organs in the GDR. Age-specific as well as age-adjusted incidence and mortality rates are subjects of the analysis. It is concluded that there is no convincing evidence for the assumption of an increased cancer risk. The demographic structure of the population of the GDR has changed considerably and cancer incidence rises steeply with increasing age. After adjustment for changes in the age distribution, it seems probable that the observed increase in new cases is due to improvements in detection, diagnosis and management only. The thesis that there exists a true epidemic of urinary cancer is rejected.
The state of detection and therapy of rectal cancer in the capital of Berlin is compared with that in the rural region of Neubrandenburg. The trend and regional differences between metropolitan and rural areas were investigated. It was shown that a population-based cancer registry yields useful information. The proportion of new cases in old age increased; stage distribution showed a tendency towards earlier detection; operative treatment became more aggressive and more successful. However, the state of detection and management was found to remain still better in the metropolitan area than in the rural region.

Bladder cancer and age. A study on the morbidity and on the state of detection and treatment with respect to age in the G.D.R. Malignant neoplasms of the urinary bladder account for about 1,400 registered new cancer cases and 1,100 deaths annually in the G.D.R. As compared with other developed industrialized countries, incidence and mortality from bladder cancer is relatively low in the G.D.R. Analysis of age-standardized incidence and mortality from 1956 to 1974 gives no clearcut evidence of an increase of bladder cancer morbidity. A regional analysis of the state of detection and treatment of bladder cancer was performed in the capital Berlin (1955-1974) and the city of Dresden (1969/70). It can be shown that there is a decrease of localized stages, of radically operated tumours and of survival rates with increasing age at time of diagnosis. In Berlin more than 30 per cent of new cases are 75 years and older. Localized stages I and II amount to nearly 50 per cent of newly registered bladder cancer cases. While mean age of patients increased in the observation period and stage distribution remained about equal, rate of radical interventions showed a slight increase reflecting a more aggressive approach to treatment. Higher survival rates can be expected in the future.

Based on data from the cancer register of the German Democratic Republic established in 1952 and on the official mortality statistics, incidence of and mortality from malignant lymphomas (ICD 200-203) in the GDR are analysed. Age-specific incidence and mortality of Hodgkin's disease show a peak in the age group of 25-30 years and rise steadily from 45 years on up to the highest age. Lymphosarcoma and reticulosarcoma increase slowly from infancy to old age, whereas multiple myeloma is a disease of the elderly and extremely rare before the age of 40. The apparent increase of malignant lymphoma may be due to underregistration at the beginning of the cancer register. In the past years mortality from Hodgkin's disease is slowly decreasing, thus reflecting progress in methods of treatment and results.
