[Investigations concerning the evidence of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) antibodies in patients with carcinoma of the cervix (author's transl)].

The neutralizing antibodies to HSV-1 and HSV-2 were determined in the sera of 128 patients. Infection was detectable in nearly 100% of the cases in each of the three investigated groups (patients with carcinoma of the cervix, female patients with chronic recurrent HSV infection in the genital area and a control group without and history of HSV infection). The percentage of patients displaying HSV-2 antibodies in the group with carcinoma of the cervix (38%) is significantly higher than in the control group (12%). The results are compared with the findings of other authors and the possible causal significance of HSV in carcinogenesis is discussed.

Somatic segregation and Fanconi anemia.

A case of Fanconi anemia with terminal acute leukemia is reported. Clones with chromosome abnormalities were observed in bone marrow cells. The patterns of marker chromosome distribution in these clones suggests the occurrence of a somatic segregation mechanism.

[Pigment Formation by Trichophyton rubrum: Differentiation between T. rubrum and T. mentagrophytes on Serum Albumin Agar (author's transl)].

On serum albumin agar (bovine albumin) with initial pH-values of 5.0-6.0, Trichophyton rubrum showed a yellow pigmentation, and on the same medium with an initial pH-value of 7.0, a red pigmentation. Strains of Trichophyton mentagrophytes have never shown pigmentation until now, The scarce growth (submerged) of T. rubrum on serum albumin agar is associated with a pigment formation that may be used for diagnostic purposes. It could be read within 3-7 days. Serum albumin agar with the initial pH-value of 5.0 was introduced in 1964 for the detection of the strain-specific proteolytic activity of Candida albicans.

[Cerebral gigantism: report on two familial cases (author's transl)].

Two cases of cerebral gigantism occurring in related boys (cousins of 3rd degree) are discussed. It is difficult to argue from these cases in favour of a precise type of hereditary transmission. The hypothesis of a dominant trait with weak penetrance cannot be excluded. A genetic heterogeneity of the Sotos syndrome is very likely.

Animal carotenoids. 12. Chirality of asterinic acid.

The chirality of monoacetylenic asterinic acid [(3S,3'S)-7,8-didehydroastaxanthin, 1a] has been established by NaBH4-reduction and hydrolysis of the corresponding diesters 1b and 1c providing the tetrol 9 and CD-correlation with diatoxanthin [3R,3'R)-7,8-didehydro-beta, beta-carotene-3,3'-diol, 10]. Diacetylenic asterinic acid [3S,3'S)-7,8,7',8'-tetradehydro-beta, beta-carotene-3,3'-diol, 2a] was assigned the some absolute configuration by similar conversion to the diacetylenic tetrol 11 and CD-correlation with alloxanthin [3R,3'R)-7,8,7',8'-tetradehydro-beta, beta-carotene-3,3'-diol, 12]. IR and CD properties of the diacetates 1C and 2C of the naturally occurring alpha-ketols are reported.

Private practice in the public sector: a unique relationship among local government, physicians, and health care consumers in Cincinnati.

Because of health care inequities that still persist under federal and state sponsorship plans, many local government agencies are starting to consider ways of directly providing medical services to the poor. Over 100 years' experience with direct provision programs in the City of Cincinnati, however, have been ultimately counterproductive. A unique three-way contract developed by the Board of Health, a private multispecialty physicians' group and a consumer advocate organization has recently allowed Cincinnati to implement a delivery system that integrates mechanisms for prepaid public health care into a fee-for-service private group practice, all within the context of a community-based neighborhood health care facility. While it is still too early to make a full evaluation of this public health care group practice model, there are already indications that is services will be superior to those offered in Cincinnati's traditional public clinics.

An interpretation of the drop ball test in terms of a statistical model for fracture.

Some well known statistical models for fracture were applied to the problem of impact of glass ophthalmic lenses. Parameters for a flaw distribution function were chosen to fit some previously published results of drop ball testing. The concept of an impact-resistant lens was reformulated in terms of minimizing the most severe flaws. Formulas were derived for the detection parameter, a convenient measure of the ability of any mechanical test to identify those lenses with the worst flaws. It was shown that the fraction of such lenses identified by the drop ball test is very small. As a side note, it was found that it is not significantly more difficult to expose "bad" lenses when they are tested in plastic bags. A method of obtaining useful information from the results of drop ball testing was outlined.

[Coupling of enzymes to modified styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers].

A copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride is modified with low molecular weight polyoles in a very convenient manner, so that it can be applied as a carried for the fixation of biologically active compounds without further pretreatment. The modified products show storage stability over a long time without loss of coupling capacity. Examples for the fixation of trypsin, alkaline phosphatase and a bacterial glutamate dehydrogenase are given, and some properties of the resulting enzyme products are described.

[Partial "de novo" trisomy 10q (author's transl)].

A partial 10q trisomy due to a de novo t(10;22) translocation is reported. The comparison with other published cases of partial 10q trisomy leads to the description of a particular syndrome essentially due to a trisomy for bands 10q24 to 10q26.

[New chromosome abnormality in chronic myeloid leukemia].

A case of chronic myelogenous leukemia with myelofibrosis and failure to respond to busulfan therapy has been reported. An abnormal clone with a rearrangement of four chromosomes, 46, XX, t(1;9) (q21; q24), t(6;22) (q26;q11) was observed. The possible significance of these chromosome abnormalities which are different from the t(9;22) translocation in C.M.L. is discussed.
