[Effect of 17-alpha-hydroxyprogesteronecapronate on sodium excretion and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone-system in humans].

In seven healthy male subjects, a natriuretic effect of 17 alpha-hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17 alpha-OHPC) was demonstrated. Three of these subjects were kept on an uncontrolled diet and were examined over a period of 12 days. To the remaining four subjects, a single dose of 250 mg 17 alpha-OHPC was given intramuscularly after four days of intake of a chemically defined diet (Vivasorb). In this second test procedure, blood samples were taken in the recumbent position every two hours throughout a period of 12 h after the injection. For two more days and during the days before the administration of 17 alpha-OHPC, blood was taken at 8 a.m. before getting up from bed in same intervals, urine was collected for analysis of sodium and potassium excretion. During the first 12 h after the injection of 17 alpha-OHPC, the urinary sodium/potassium ratio significantly increased in all subjects. Plasma renin activity showed no characteristic changes at this time, whereas the plasma concentrations of aldosterone and cortisol decreased. The decrease of cortisol concentration started immediately after the injection and was more pronounced than that of plasma aldosterone. During the following 36 h, renin activity as well as aldosterone and cortisol concentrations in plasma showed an increase; in contrast, the sodium/potassium ratio decreased. On the basis of these results, the following effects of 17 alpha-OHPC are discussed: (1) an acute natriuresis which may be due to a competitive inhibition of aldosterone at the renal tubules, and (2) an inhibition of pituitary ACTH secretion or of adrenal steroid biosynthesis.

Conscious dynamic versus unconscious static cystourethrography.

Prior to treatment 30 urologically symptomatic subjects were studied with dynamic voiding cystourethrography while conscious and with single shot high pressure static cystourethrography while anesthetized. The former technique did not surpass the latter in demonstrating reflux, lower urinary tract disease or urethral anatomical detail. It is concluded that (problem cases aside) when management requires anesthetizing the patient only the high pressure, single shot static method should be used and that omission of premedication and manipulation of anesthetic planes to produce voiding are neither necessary nor desirable.

Aging of impregnated charcoal studied by powder x-ray diffraction.

The effects of aging, naturally and artificially, on the cyanogen chloride capacity of copper and chromium impregnated charcoals were demonstrated by means of an x-ray technique. The results reveal that crystallite growth of water soluble impregnants seems to be the primary cause of the capacity loss.

Corynebacterium equi infection complicating neoplastic disease.

Corynebacterium equi, a soil-residing diphtheroid pathogenic in horses, swine and cows, caused pulmonary infection with bacteremia in two patients with lymphomas. Both patients were being treated with immunosuppressive therapy, as were the patients in three previously reported human cases. Unless certain characteristics of these organisms are recognized, they may be regarded as normal flora or contaminating diphtheroids. They could also be mistaken for other gram-positive rods, such as Bacillus species, Listeria monocytogenes, or Erysipelothrix insidiosa. C. equi isolates have usually been sensitive to erythromycin, tetracycline, gentamicin, and carbenicillin. One of the patients reported here was successfully treated with erythromycin, tetracycline, and surgery.

[Quantitative-morphological studies of the heart of MINI-LEWE minature swine. 2: Atrioventricular and semilunar valves].

Reference is made to the possible use of cardiac valves of animal origin as heteroplastic material in cardiac valve surgery. In that context, quantitative studies were conducted into all four cardiac valves. The data measured from clinically intact animals exhibited wide scatter. Different numbers of leaflets (between two and six) were recorded from atrioventricular valves, whereas three valvulae were always found on the semilunar valves. The volume of the tricuspid valve was significantly higher than that of the mitral valve, and among the semilunar valves bigger size was established for the aortic valve. Valve size grew along with body weight, as established by correlative analysis. The data measured by the examiners were compared with variables reported in literature.

Caffeine content of beverages as consumed.

Quantitative analysis of beverages prepared at home by staff of the Addiction Research Foundation revealed a lower and much more variable caffeine content of both tea and coffee than had been reported in earlier studies, most of which were based on analysis of laboratory-prepared beverages. Median caffeine concentration of 37 home-prepared samples of tea was 27 mg per cup (range, 8 to 91 mg); for 46 coffee samples the median concentration was 74 mg per cup (range, 29 to 176 mg). If tea and coffee as drunk contain less caffeine than generally supposed, the potency of caffeine may be greater than commonly realized, as may the relative caffeine content of certain commercial preparations, including chocolate and colas. The substantial variation in caffeine content emphasizes the need to establish actual caffeine intake in clinical, epidemiologic and experimental investigations of caffeine effects.

[Quantitative morphological studies on various organs of the MINI-LEWE miniature swine].

Quantitative morphological studies were conducted into 27 MINI-LEWE miniature pigs, with the view to exploring the correlations between a number of organs (liver, kidneys, heart, spleen, pancreas, adrenal gland, and thyroid gland) and parameters (live weight, age, weight at slaughter, length from snout to tail root, and internal length of slaughter body). The results are presented in 12 ilustrations and five tables.

Rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis with antibodies against glomerular basement membranes in serum and kidneys.

Four cases of rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis with similar clinical courses are presented. Examination of kidney biopsies from these patients showed severe glomerulitis with capillary necrosis, fibrin thrombi and interstitial inflammation but no vasculitis. Electron microscopy showed wrinkled capillary basement membranes which were irregularly thickened, homogenous and had an irregular fibrillar structure. No localized deposits were observed. Immunohistological examination demonstrated linear and diffuse deposition of IgG and C3 along glomerular basement membranes. Nephrectomized kidneys from these patients were eluted and shown to contain antibodies against glomerular basement membrane. These antibodies were also present in sera of three of the patients.

Surgical treatment for ventricular aneurysm.

The results of 110 patients with ventricular aneurysm treated surgically are discussed. The overall mortality in this group was 11.8 per cent. Since the use of coronary bypass operation and the intra-aortic balloon pump, the mortality has been significantly reduced.

[Histological studies on the capillarization of various muscles in industrially raised rabbits].

The longissimus dorsi, semitendinosus, psoas major and biceps femoris muscles of 40 industrially kept rabbits were studied in regard to their numbers of capillaries per square mm. The relation between the number of capillaries and muscle fibres is narrower in a red muscle than in a white one. The total body mass is of more influence on the number of capillaries per square mm than the age.

[Anatomical studies on the quantitative development of liver, heart and adrenal glands in white New Zealand rabbits].

Five male and five female pure-bred White New Zealanders, including newborns and young animals, one, two, and three months of age, were examined. No sex-dependent difference was established for the parameters tested (weight of liver, heart, and adrenal gland). Significant weight differences were found to exist between the age groups. The relative weights of the organs under review declined along with growing age. Correlations were found to exist between the weights of liver, heart, and adrenal gland.
