[The structure of old age insurance carriers and the principle of subsidies].

This paper reports on the organizational structure of public and non-public welfare institutions for the aid to the aged. The latter ("charitable non-profit associations") constitute the most important social institutions based on voluntary rather statutory provision of social services in the Federal Republic of Germany. The first section is devoted to a description of the legel provisions regarding goals, institutions, type and means of service provision of different institutions aiding the aged in relation to each other. In conclusion, the hierarchical structure of the institutions is discussed in relation to the observance of the principle of subsidiarity. In the framework of a critical discussion of the concept of neocorporationalism, it is pointed out that in any analysis of the institutional structure of the aid to the aged it is necessary to take into consideration the behavior of those concerned.

[Long-term results after yttrium treatment of the knee joint].

A group of 30 patients was followed for 5 and 8 years after yttrium treatment and the results are reported. There had been a significant pain relief. However, there was no definite improvement of swelling. Two and 5 years after the treatment the groups of patients who were in the ARA-stages I and II were significantly better than the patients in the ARA-stage III. The patients' sex and age and the duration of the disease had no influence on the general results.

The strength of association between systemic postmenopausal osteoporosis and periodontal disease.

This cross-sectional study examined the strength of association between systemic osteoporosis and periodontal status in postmenopausal non-Hispanic white women. Twenty subjects with low bone density and a spine bone density of 0.753 +/- 0.039 dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry units (g/cm2) and 22 subjects with high bone density and a spine bone density of 1.032 +/- 0.028 dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry units (g/cm2) were randomly selected from a cohort of 565 women. Periodontal assessment included Plaque Index, Gingival Index, pocket depth, gingival recession, and periodontal attachment level. There were no significant differences in Plaque Index, Gingival Index, and probing depth in both groups; however, there were significant differences in gingival recession components of periodontal attachment level in both groups. This study suggests that systemic osteoporosis may contribute to periodontal attachment loss in the form of gingival recession.
