Treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhoea in women with talampicillin in a single oral 1.5 g dose.

Four hundred and sixty women with uncomplicated gonorrhea were treated with a single oral dose of 1.5 g talampicillin. The success rate among those who attended for at least one follow-up examination after treatment was 99.14%. The antibiotic was well tolerated and no side effects were reported. Talampicillin given under supervision has proved to be the most effective and safest treatment in this area. A smaller dosage of talampicillin than ampicillin is required, the drug is better tolerated by the patient, and the time of nursing staff is saved.

Automated fluorometric analysis of calcium pantothenate in multivitamin preparations.

An automated fluorometric procedures is described for assaying calcium pantothenate in multivitamin preparations. Sample extracts containing calcium pantothenate are treated on-line with a slurry of magnesium trisilicate which removes any interfering riboflavin that may be present. The filtrate is resampled, mixed on-line with a slurry of Dowex 50W-X4 (H+) which removes any interfering beta-alanine that may be present, and dialyzed. Dialysates are hydrolyzed in an alkaline medium and reacted with a mixture of o-phthalaldehyde and 2-mercaptoethanol in boric acid solution. The fluorescence intensity due to the formation of a fluorogenic compound is measured at 455 nm after excitation at 350 nm. The procedure developed is capable of analyzing 20 samples/hr. Analytical data indicate that calcium pantothenate is assayed reliably both from real and synthetic multivitamin preparations. The mean recovery of calcium pantothenate added to sample solutions of tablet composites was 95.4%.

Semiautomated fluorometric analysis of riboflavin in nutrient premixes containing reduced iron.

A simple, rapid, and reproducible semiautomated method is described for routine analysis of riboflavin in premixes containing high levels of reduced iron. Reduced iron is separated from premixes by a magnet before digestion with sulfuric acid solution. The presence of ferrous sulfate, ferric pyrophosphate, and sodium ferric pyrophosphate in premixes did not affect the analytical results for riboflavin. Pretreating sample extracts with potassium permanganate and hydrogen peroxide gave variable results for riboflavin. Possible causes and mechanisms of iron interferences in fluorometric riboflavin analysis are briefly discussed. The procedure developed is capable of analyzing 40 samples/hr.

Two-day treatment of trichomoniasis in the female. Comparison of metronidazole and nimorazole.

A comparison has been made of the efficiency of a 2-day course of metronidazole (Flagyl) with that of a similar course of nimorazole (Naxogin) in the treatment of trichomoniasis. Of the 105 consecutive patients treated, 72 were finally included in the study (38 on metronidazole and 34 on nimorazole). Follow-up tests indicated an overall cure rate of 84-3 per cent. in those given Flagyl and 85-3 per cent. in those given Naxogin. Consorts were treated in just over 55 per cent. of cases in both groups. An attempt has been made to classify the recurrences as either 'primary' treatment failures or re-infections. Although both drugs were effective in the majority of cases, 'primary' treatment failure appeared to be commoner in the group receiving metronidazole. It is emphasized that the total dose of metronidazole was substantially lower than that recommended by the manufacturers.

Automated fluorometric method for determination of total vitamin C in food products.

A specific microfluorometric method for the determination of ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid, and total vitamin C in food products has been automated. The procedure developed is an adaptation of the official AOAC method (secs. 43.056-43.062), except that N-bromosuccinimide is used instead of Norit to oxidize vitamin C. Ascorbic acid is selectively oxidized by N-bromosuccinimide before other interfering substances that may be present, so this method is a highly sensitive and specific technique with extensive applicability. The proposed automated method is simple, rapid, reliable, and sufficiently sensitive to analyze as little as 2 x 10-3 to 0.1 mg ascorbic acid/ml. Analytical results obtained for ascorbic acid, dehydroascorbic acid, and total vitamin C in a wide variety of food products are reported. The analytical system developed has the capability of analyzing 50 samples/hr.

Schistosomiasis of the urinary bladder. A case report.

The case is reported of a man with schistosomiasis of the bladder which gave rise to non-gonococcal urethritis. Diagnosis was confirmed by finding the characteristic terminal-spined Schistosoma haematobium ova in the urine deposit. The cystoscopic appearances further confirmed the disease and its stage. The patient responded satisfactorily to treatment although the follow-up period was short.

Treatment of trichomoniasis in the female. A comparison of metronidazole and nimorazole.

The effectiveness of metronidazole (Flagyl) and nimorazole (Naxogin) has been compared by using these drugs in the recommended dosage in alternate patients in a series of 218 consecutive cases of vaginal trichomoniasis. Follow-up tests in 100 patients treated with metronidazole and 97 treated with nimorazole indicated cure-rates of 95 and 82 per cent. respectively. Male consorts were examined and given treatment on epidemiological grounds in about 70 per cent. of both treatment groups. Both drugs were free from significant side-effects. The causes of treatment failure in trichomoniasis are discussed and the desirability of relating dosage to the patient's body-weight is suggested. This factor may be especially important in deciding the dosage given on epidemiological grounds to the male consorts. It may also be an important advantage in the current trend of treating trichomoniasis in both sexes with larger doses over a much shorter time.

Automation in the blood transfusion laboratory. 3. Use of the autoanalyzer in a prenatal consultation program.

A Technicon AutoAnalyzer hemagglutination system was used to test sera from 1388 prenatal patients. This automated approach to antibody screening was slightly more successful than careful hand tests. Estimates of anti-D concentration on the AutoAnalyzer correlated well with antiglobulin titres and compared favourably with hand titres in indicating those cases requiring examination of amniotic fluid. Once other large-scale studies establish what levels of anti-D are clinically significant, apparatus of the type described should be of considerable practical value in routine prenatal work.
