Liquid chromatographic separation of some PTH-amino acids.

Liquid chromatographic studies on the separation of ten PTH-amino acids were carried out using normal phase untreated silica gel plates, C-18 RP precoated plates and RP-HPLC. Resolution of a complex mixture of PTH-amino acids was achieved using all the three types. Certain new successful solvent systems have been worked out in each case. HPLC was carried out with Lichrosphere 100 RP-18 (5 microns) column. Acetonitrile and sodium acetate buffer of pH 4.0 was used for reversed phase chromatography while for normal phase TLC combinations of chloroform-acetonitrile and chloroform-tetrahydrofuran were applied.

Completion thyroidectomy for thyroid carcinoma.

We have reviewed the charts of 149 patients who underwent completion thyroidectomies for cancer of the thyroid. The purpose of the study was to evaluate extent of residual disease in the thyroid, and morbidity and mortality of the operation. Residual cancer was found in 58% of the cases, the morbidity was low, and there was no operative mortality.

Hematological manifestations of congenital cytomegalovirus infection.

Nine infants suffering from congenital cytomegalovirus infection were studied for clinical features with special reference to hematological manifestations. The mean age of appearance of first clinical symptom of disease was 14 days and mean age at presentation was 58 days. Significant pallor, thrombocytopenia and evidence of hemolysis were present in 8 (89%), 4 (44%) and 4 (44%) patients respectively out of three bone marrow examination performed, paucity of erythroid and megakaryocytic cells were seen in two. The other clinical features included hepatomegaly in a (100%) splenomegaly in 6 (66%) each, petachial rash in 5 (55%), Hepatitis in 4 (44%) optic atrophy and corneal opacities in one patient each. Two patients died. Remaining patients showed symptomatic improvement without specific therapy.

Blocking of the hepatic vein outflow by neointima covering a wallstent across a membranous stenosis of the inferior vena cava.

A 31-year-old man presented with idiopathic membranous obstruction of the suprahepatic inferior vena cava (IVC) and was treated by balloon dilation and placement of a Wallstent. The patient improved markedly. However, he developed obstruction of the hepatic vein outflow secondary to neointima formation over the stent that covered the hepatic vein ostia. The patient died of liver failure and septicemia. We believe that this is the first report of such a serious complication.
