[How to recognize personality disorders in general medicine].

DEFINITION: The psychological traits characteristic of an individual define that person's personality. A personality disorder is considered to exist when it causes the person or his/her family or friends to suffer. Personality disorders are often associated with a state of depression, aggravating or prolonging it. FUNDAMENTAL ASPECTS: Histrionic, paranoid, obsessional and psychopathic personalities are the most well known types of personality disorders, but dependent and borderline personalities should not be overlooked. Cognitive and behavioral therapies are particularly useful in this field of health care.

Depressive Disorder↗

[Between anxiety and depression. The status of assertiveness disorders and social phobias].

The authors try to answer the question of the nosological status of social phobias and assertiveness difficulties, which are usually included in the large group of anxious troubles. The correlation between Rathus Rating Scale, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and sub-scores of HDRS were studied in two populations; the first one was constituted by anxious and/or depressed patients, the second, extracted from the first one, by anxious patients only. The results show that lack of assertiveness has probably both affective and anxious components. These results are important from a nosological and therapeutic point of view.

Adolescent↗

[Haloperidol. Plasma monitoring and hormonal effects of treatment].

Therapeutic plasma monitoring of haloperidol, a major neuroleptic, measured by radioimmunoassay, has shown a rather good correlation between plasma level and dosage but with large interindividual variation in children as in adults; age seems not to have any effect on haloperidol metabolism. 80% of subjects present a concomitant prolactin levels variation, whereas in 20% no prolactin response is found. During acute kinetics of either a 10 mg oral haloperidol administration or a 250 mg intramuscular haloperidol decanoate injection, a parallel elevation of prolactin, cortisol, immunoreactive bêta-endorphin and bêta-lipotropin plasma levels occur, at the same time as haloperidol plasma levels. Those rise with a good equivalence between the two doses of the two forms.
