Field observation on the population fluctuation of Oncomelana snail at low density was carried out in the ditches and rivers in Wuxi, Ludong and Lugao counties (or city) from 1987 to 1990. The results showed that the environment of the observed places is an important factor in the population fluctuation of the snails at low density. When the environment is appropriate, even one pair of the snails may multiply to a large population. Results of successive observation for 3 years on 1, 5 and 10 pairs of snails within nylon cages in ditches showed that the density of the snails increased by 171.5, 69.5 and 28.4 folds respectively and the population of the snails increased by 354, 135 and 75 folds respectively. The population in 2 of the observed ditches with one pair of snails each even multiply by 543 and 426.5 folds. While in natural field condition, the population fluctuation of residual snails varied in different places. In one ditch it multiplied by 34.7 folds, but in another river the population almost unchanged. No natural elimination of snails could be found in all observed places. It was suggested that the snail surveillance should be conducted persistently and any snail once be found, it should be timely eradicated.
This paper deals with whether the posterior hypothalamus area (PHA) can receive signals from electroacupuncture (EA) at "Neiguan", and whether a relative specificity does exist between acupoints or acupoint and non-acupoint. The neuron activity was recorded extracellularly for analyzing the influence of EA at different acupoints and non-acupoint on the discharge of PHA neurons.

The configuration of the P53 tumor suppressor gene was investigated in 43 Chinese patients with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), 32 in chronic phase and 11 in blastic crisis. No obvious rearranged DNA band was detected in Southern blot patterns from patients at both stages of the disease. However, P53 gene deletion events were observed in 4 out of 11 cases in blast crisis. This finding was associated with a cytogenetically identifiable chromosome 17p deletion, iso(17q), in only one out of 4 cases.
Amygdaloid nucleus (AMYG) could converge and integrate the signals from electroacupuncture (EA) at Neiguan (P 6) and acute myocardial ischemia (AMI) in rabbits. And EA could regulate the changes in the discharge of single units in AMYG caused by AMI, that is, EA inhibited the increased frequency, and reversed the decreased frequency. This suggested that AMYG is an important link in correlation between the heart and the acupoint Neiguan, providing an experimental basis for the Theory of Channel--Viscera Correlation.
The theory of acupoint-Zangfu correlation is one of the essential contents of the doctrine of Channel and Collateral. Being based on this theory, a study has been done from the experimental research point of view in our laboratory since 1979, to approach the specific interrelationships between some acupoints on the pericardial channel and heart, as well as their functional regularities, and has served for clinical practice, which provided the basis for the research on the connective pathways between the pericardial channel and heart. Coronary heart disease, one has been treated effectively by acupuncture, was selected and, by imitating the early stage of myocardial infarction, the reperfusion model of coronary artery in rabbits was designed to produce a reversible acute myocardial ischemic injury. As the indices, the ST segments of second standard lead and augmented unipolar limb leads of electrocardiogram were obviously improved when electroacupuncture (EA) was applied to the points "Jianshi" or "Neiguan", these could be observed repeatedly. Then the factors influencing the effects of acupuncture were analysed. The effects of EA at six points on "pericardial channel", "urinary bladder channel" and "liver channel" were compared. Results showed that both "Ximen" and "Weishu" were able to accelerate the restoration of acute myocardial ischemic injury. However, EA at "Zhongdu" and "Xiguan" could hardly affect, this indicates that "where the channel passes through, where it affects on".(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
AMI was produced by occlusion of LVB for 30 min in the rabbit, lengthening the conductive time of myocardium in the ischemic area and resulting in asynchronous activation state of myocardium. EA could facilitate the conductance of electric activation in the ischemic marginal area and make the activation of myocardial cells in this area synchronous which is of importance in blocking the formation of reentrant circuit. The finding suggests that EA possesses an antiarrhythmic effect.
The activity of PHA neurons was extracellularly recorded by using glass microelectrodes and the mutual relationship between PO-AH and PHA during the regulation activity of EA was analysed. The results were as follows: 1. The activity of most PHA neurons could be changed by PO-AH stimulation. 2. The activity of some PHA neurons could be affected by AMI. 3. The AMI-induced PHA neurons activity could be changed by EA at "Neiguan". 4. The effect of EA could be enhanced in some PHA neurons by PO-AH stimulation under EA. The findings suggest that PO-AH and PHA possess some coordination effect in the regulation of EA at "Neiguan" on the functional activity of the heart.

Measurement-dependent filtering, a nonlinear noise-reduction technique, was used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of in vivo T2-weighted magnetic resonance images of the prostate gland. In both normal and abnormal prostates, the technique considerably reduced noise in T2-weighted images. The technique may provide more accurate depiction of regions of benign prostatic hyperplasia and carcinoma in the prostate.
The human fetal gamma chains are produced by closely linked G gamma and A gamma genes, and unequal crossing over between them leads to gamma gene deletions and triplications. Nine gamma gene triplications from seven ethnic groups were analyzed for G gamma and hemoglobin F (Hb F) values of heterozygotes and for the presence of polymorphic XmnI restriction sites 5' to the gamma genes. Four categories of triplication were found: I had low G gamma and low Hb F values and lacked XmnI sites 5' to the three gamma genes [---]. II had high G gamma and slightly elevated Hb F values but was also [---]. III was similar to II, except that XmnI was [+--]. IV had very high G gamma and slightly elevated Hb F values, and XmnI was [++-]. One case each of triplications I and IV were cloned into Charon 35. For both, the two 5' gamma gene code for G gamma chain, while the 3' gamma gene codes for A gamma chain. DNA sequencing showed that the unequal crossover occurred between 472 and 398 base pairs (bp) 5' to the gamma gene Cap sites (-472 and -398) for the type IV triplication and between -271 and codon 136 for the type I triplication. In addition, type I had a 4-bp deletion of AGCA from -225 to -222. The high G gamma values of the type IV triplication are explained by its -G gamma-G gamma-A gamma-gene arrangement and the XmnI sites 5' to the G gamma genes. We hypothesize that the low G gamma value of the type I triplication, which is also -G gamma-G gamma-A gamma-, is due to inactivation of the middle G gamma gene by the AGCA deletion at -225 to -222.
