Blood oxygen transport and organ weights of two shrew species (S. etruscus and C. russula).

Blood parameters concerning oxygen transport and relative organ weights of 11 Suncus etruscus and 13 Crocidura russula under light halothane anesthesia were investigated. Mean body weight of S. etruscus was 2.5 g and for C. russula was 9 g, hemoglobin concentration was 17.4 and 15.6 g/100 ml blood, hematocrit was 50 and 44%, red blood cells were 18 and 11 X 10(6)/microliter, respectively. Mean corpuscular volume was calculated to be 26 and 41 micron3, mean diameter 5.5 and 7 micron, and mean thickness 1.2 and 1.1 micron, respectively. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration was in the normal range of mammalian red blood cells. A blood oxygen half-saturation pressure of 35 and 34 Torr at pH 7.4, 37 degrees C and a Bohr factor deltalog P50/deltapH of -0.61 and -0.66 was measured. Experiments with stripped hemoglobin showed that 2,3-diphosphoglycerate is the main oxygen affinity reducing allosteric factor. Relative weights of heart, kidney, and liver are remarkably high in S. etruscus. The maximal oxygen transport of 400 ml . kg-1 . min-1 of S. etruscus is feasible by an enormous heart rate, a large relative stroke volume, a high hemoglobin concentration combined with a low oxygen affinity, and a large Bohr effect.

Squamous metaplasia or epidermalization of the conjunctiva as an adverse reaction to topical medication.

Prolonged topical medication causes epidermalization of the conjunctiva in some patients. Loss of the normal conjunctival goblet cells, direct toxic effects on the corneal epithelium, and disturbance of lid function may combine to produce corneal changes which may be misinterpreted and treated with further potentially toxic compounds. Examples of conjunctival changes caused by miotic and non-miotic antiglaucoma therapy, mydriatics, preservatives, and antiviral compounds are presented.

Enigma of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid. A comparative study of clinical and immunological findings.

The clinical and immunological findings in 22 cases of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid are presented. Males and females were equally affected. Mucosal ulceration (both conjunctival and oral) and early involvement of the canthal structures were the most helpful clinical signs. None of the patients had circulating antibody to basement membrane determinants at presentation, but four developed typical pemphigoid antibodies during observation and three others showed an unusual "string of pearls" pattern on indirect immunofluorescence which changed to a pemphigoid pattern in one of them. Treatment of the acute ulcerative lesions with topical steroids was effective and prevented scarring, but otherwise treatment was ineffectual. The presence of antibody and its titre was not influenced by the severity of the disease or by systemic treatment.

[Respiratory function of blood and relative weight of certain organs in two species of shrew: Crocidura russula and Suncus etruscus (Soricidae mammals)].

A high oxygen capacity combined with a low oxygen affinity and a large Bohr effect achieve a high oxygen transport capacity in small shrews. The high metabolic rate (Suncus estruscus: 100 to 350 ml O2/kg. min) can be explained by the combination of the favorable blood parameters with a high relative heart weight (1,2% of body weight) and heart frequencies of 1,000 to 1,350 per minute.

Asking multiple questions about several items: the design of matrix structures on application forms.

It is common practice on application forms to locate questions in column headings. Two experiments are reported both showing that this yields poorer performance than having the same questions as row headings. Siting questions in row headings also makes it easier to include short notes alongside the questions, rather than having them located elsewhere on the form. When several questions share a column or row heading the form filler must use letter codes to indicate which question is being answered. The present data show that the use of letter codes can lead to unnecessary errors and wastes time. It is preferable to arrange the information in a matrix so that answers can be given as ticks.

Adverse reactions to practolol: some observations on the possible relevence to immune mechanisms.

HLA antigen frequencies were determined in patients who had suffered adverse reaction to the beta-adrenergic blocking agent, practolol. No statistically significant differences were observed between these patients and control groups. The latter were selected to include two separate groups, normal random healthy population controls, and controls who had taken practolol with no apparent adverse effects. Patients suffering from the very severe form of reaction, sclerosing peritonitis, were analysed separately from those with other lesion e.g. ocular symptoms, but did not show any significant differences. Altered HLA antigen frequencies were observed for those control patients whose primary diagnosis was hypertension but this was considered to be due to selection bias.

Characteristics of inapparent Aleutian disease virus infection in mink.

Inapparent of nonprogressive Aleutian disease virus (ADV) infection is a subclinical but persistent virus infection of mink. Mink with the inapparent type of ADV infection when subjected to stress did not develop the progessive form of the disease. However, when challenged with a large dose of the virus, these mink did develop progressive Aleutian disease indicating that they were not highly resistant to the virus. Sera of mink with either the progressive of the inapparent type of ADV infection did not neutralise the virus. The anti-ADV antibody activity in mink with inapparent type of ADV infection was in the IgG fraction of the serum the same as in mink with progressive Aleutian disease. These data indicate that the resistance of the mink with inapparent infection as compared to mink with progressive Aleutian disease was not due to a difference in the class of immunoglobulin response to the virus. However, mink with progressive Aleutian disease showed a greatly increased immunoglobulin response.

Inferior oblique myectomy, disinsertion, and recession in rhesus monkeys.

Twenty-one myectomies near the insertion, 22 disinsertions, and two recessions were performed. After healing was complete, each animal was sacrificed. Anatomical dissection showed the following:(1) in every disinsertion and myectomy case, the inferior oblique muscle spontaneously reattached itself to the sclera;(2) the site of reattachment following these two procedures varied widely, ranging from the original insertion site to other areas adjacent to the lateral rectus or inferior rectus insertions; (3) disinsertion and myectomy shortened the inferior oblique muscle to two thirds its normal length, while recession shortened the muscle to one third its normal length.

Corneal mucus plaques.

Corneal mucus plaques adhered to the anterior corneal surface in 17 of 67 advanced cases of keratoconjunctivitis sicca. The plaques were translucent to opaque and varied in size and shape, from multiple isolated islands to bizarre patterns involving more than half the corneal surface. Ultrastructurally, they consisted of mucus mixed with desquamated degenerating epithelial cells and proteinaceous and lipoidal material. The condition may be symptomatic but can be controlled and prevented in most cases by topical ocular application of 10% acetylcysteine.

Mucus in the healthy and diseased eye.

Mucous glycoproteins play an important role in maintaining the normal surface of the eye. Changes in the physical properties and chemical composition occur in disease with increased viscosity and a shift in the type of acid glycoprotein towards a predominance of sulphomucin causing some of the distinctive clinical features seen in dry eyes, superior limbic keratitis (SLK), vernal catarrh, and neuroparalytic keratitis.
