Lymphocyte response in patients with head and neck cancer: effect of clinical stage and radiotherapy.

Ffty-three patients with head and neck cancer tested before radiation treatment to determine numbers of blood lymphocytes and immunologic responses to mitogens of lymphocytes in whole-blood cultures had mean values that were 19% to 26% less than values for healthy individuals. Thirty patients whose disease was in stages III or IV had values similar to those in 23 patients whose disease was in stages I or II. Values for 45 patients tested at end of radiotherapy decreased to about 50% of pretreatment values; however, patients with advanced lesions experienced greater decreases (to 24% to 50%) than patients with localized lesions (to 71% to 84%). Patients with advanced lesions usually received radiation to larger areas than patients with localized lesions; therefore, the extent of decline in laboratory values was most likely dependent on volume of tissue treated.

Ascorbic acid and the prevention of the early action of cadmium on scrotal and cryptorchid testes in the rat.

An injection of cadmium chloride at a dose level of 0.45 mg/100 g bw, exerts a differential deleterious influence on cryptorchid and contralateral scrotal testes of the same rat. A considerable damage of the cryptorchid testis is caused, with degenerative changes, after 72h following cadmium administration. However, a concomitant regimen of ascorbic acid, a potent antitoxic agent as well as a blocker of nonspecific stresses, prevents those testicular lesions quite appreciably. On the basis of our experimental documentation we believe that the adverse influence of cadmium at the testicular level might be a mediation of the metabolic alteration due to an augmented availability of endogenous catecholamines.

Purification and sequence of a non-opioid peptide derived from ovine proenkephalin: implications for possible species specific processing.

A non-enkephalin containing pentadeca peptide derived from ovine adrenal proenkephalin has been purified and sequenced. The sequence of the peptide is: Phe-Ala-Glu-Pro-Leu-Pro-Ser-Glu-Glu-Glu-Gly-Glu-Ser-Tyr-Ser (preproenkephalin 237-251) representing the amino portion of peptide B (preproenkephalin 237-268). The sequence is identical to bovine preproenkephalin 237-251, differing from the corresponding human sequence at positions 240 and 244. This peptide can be generated by a processing event common to other opioid peptides and is present in chromaffin granules in significant amounts. The presence of this peptide in substantial quantities suggests a possible difference in proenkephalin processing between the bovine and ovine adrenal medulla.
