On the basis of a series of 89 patients with a histologically confirmed adenocarcinoma of the prostate and another population of 89 patients with prostatic hypertrophy, also confirmed histologically, the authors study the sensitivity and specificity of the radio-immunological estimation of prostatic acid phosphatase levels. Comparison is made of the performance of radio-immunological techniques with that of conventional techniques. As a general rule, the sensitivity of the test is very low, since amongst 39% of the prostatic carcinomas studied, the RI acid phosphatase level was below the upper limit of normal fixed at 3.2 ng/ml. By contrast, the degree of specificity is high, since amongst 96% of cases with abnormally high RI acid phosphatase levels, the diagnosis was indeed an adenocarcinoma of the prostate. In terms of stages, sensitivity was found to be nil for minor stages T1 - T2 and of the order of 80% for advanced stages. This confirmed data from the literature. In the absence of bone metastases detectable radiologically or by isotope bone scan, an abnormally high RI acid phosphatase level is predictive of lymph node involvement in 90% of cases. By contrast, under the same conditions of bone investigations, a normal RI acid phosphatase level corresponds in 81% of cases with absence of lymph node involvement and in 19% with limited involvement. In patients with value which are normal or become normal under the influence of treatment, the prognosis is better than if such does not apply. Finally, figures given by radioimmunological estimation are much more specific than those obtained by traditional enzyme estimations.

For the preparation of rabies vaccines, virus was grown in cultures of primary cells (bovine fetal kidney) or heteroploid cell lines (Hak and Vero). Comparative analysis of concentrated and/or purified antigen has shown a good correlation between the protective capacity (as determined by the NIH test for potency) on one hand, and hemagglutinating titer, optical absorbance at 280 nm and glycoprotein content (evaluated by the Enzyme-Immuno Assay - EIA) on the other. Furthermore, the evaluation of the respective content of glycoprotein and nucleoprotein (EIA) before and after impairment of viral membrane can be done to know if the rabies glycoprotein is anchored in an intact membrane or not (soluble glycoprotein). In addition, a good correlation has been obtained for the virus harvest between the NIH-test and the EIA-glycoprotein titer. In the light of the easy and rapid application of Enzyme-Immunoassay it is suggested that this technique be used for the analysis and evaluation of expected potency of virus harvest during rabies vaccine production.
UNLABELLED: The authors present the results of 78 radical cystectomies for bladder tumour, followed up for at least 3 years. All the patients received preoperative pelvic radiotherapy (in general a flash of 5 Gys). Urinary derivation was of transintestinal cutaneous ureterostomy type. Surgery was followed by additional radiotherapy of 50 Gys in 9 patients and chemotherapy (adriamycin, Vehem and cis-platinum) in 6. RESULTS: stages 0 and A - 100% survival; stage B - 74%; stage C - 29% and stage D - 30%. Amongst the patients dying as a result of their carcinoma, 25% stage B, 36% stage C and 20% stage D had local recurrences. With regard to the prevention of recurrences, heavy preoperative radiotherapy is not more effective than flash radiotherapy of 5 Gy. For stage D and C patients together, overall survival was 50% at 3 years. Four stage D patients appear to be cured at 3 years, i.e. 17% of the stage D cases. This proves the possibility of "cure" of stage D disease by extended excision and thorough lymph node dissection. Adjuvant chemotherapy may certainly play a role.
Deferentography was employed during medical and surgical investigations of 44 cases of male sterility. This technique is easily performed in out patients and appears to be inocuous. Radiological signs were normal in 31 cases, and it was possible to evaluate anatomical characteristics and to obtain precise measurements of the vasa deferentia, the ampulla, the seminal vesicles, and the ejaculatory canals. Abnormal findings, present in 13 cases, corresponded to bilateral deferens obstruction of either congenital (agenesis), or acquired (stenosis due to infection or inflammation) origin. The major limitation of this investigational method is that epididymal obstruction cannot be demonstrated.
The effects of rabies virus on host cells were studied and compared to those obtained with another rhabdovirus, vesicular stomatitis virus [J. Virol. 34, 777-781 (1980)]. We show here: (1) that rabies infection has no effect on cell morphology, while infection with vesicular stomatitis virus caused cell retraction. Thus, only vesicular stomatitis virus induced a depolymerization of the microfilaments; and (2) that microtubules and microfilaments do not play a major role in rabies virus production, as it is suggested by results obtained with several effectors (colcemid, colchicine and cytochalasin-B) which directly or indirectly affect cytoskeleton organization. The same properties were observed with directly or indirectly affect cytoskeleton organization. The same properties were observed with vesicular stomatitis virus. Furthermore, the use of cytochalasin-B shows that an inhibition of glycosylation of the virion spike protein occurs only in rabies infected cells. As vesicular stomatitis viral glycosylation is normal in cytochalasin-B treated cells, results obtained indicate that two types of interactions can occur between a virion and the host-cell depending on the rhabdovirus type.

Semi-quantitative estimations of the activities of 65 enzymes were studied for cases of azoospermia in an attempt to correlate the seminal enzyme profile with the origin of the azoospermia. One single enzyme--alpha-glucosidase--showed variation. All other specificities tested gave identical results for all the azoospermic samples and for normal controls. The alpha-glucosidase activity that is present in normal semen was absent from samples from patients with azoospermia associated with a complete obstruction of the genital tract, and also from all semen samples from vasectomized subjects. This enzyme appears to be secreted by the epididymis, and the activity present in azoospermic semen can provide information concerning the origin of the azoospermia and the functional state of the epididymis. Positive but reduced alpha-glucosidase activity appears to be frequently associated with inflammatory disease. The consequences of these findings are discussed.
Azoospermia is frequently due to an obstruction of genital pathways. In this work, concerning 22 patients submitted to surgical investigation for sterility, we made a systematic histological investigation of the lesions, and we studied the motility of epididymal spermatozoa. We observed with an unexpected frequency abnormalities of junctions either between seminiferous tubules and efferents ducts - leading to disappearance of rete testis - or between efferent ducts and epididymis. In each case a fibrosis of the epididymis was discovered, the consequence was either an interruption or, more frequently a simple narrowing of the lumen of the epididymal duct. The presence of spermiophages which destroyed all spermatozoa, was also systematically observed. The origin of the lesions (congenital, inflammatory, ischemic... ) could not be determined by simple histological study. Motility of spermatozoa was generally observed in the initial portion of the epididymal duct, but motile spermatozoa were sometimes still observed in the efferent tubules. Motility could be initiated by caffeine while other compounds as albumin, seminal plasma and different organic substrates, had no effects.
This study is concerned with the following characteristics of the vaccines: 1.) protecting power, 2.) rabies antigens and 3.) major polypeptide components. This study was performed on supernatants of tissue cultures and on concentrated and purified vaccines. Moreover, some cellular and serum contaminants, especially the proteins produced by BHK cells, as well as minor rabies proteins, were analysed in the viral solutions. Thus, it appears that all three types of vaccines have a similar protecting power (Number of 50% protective doses/micrograms viral protein).
Fifty-six patients (112 testicular cords) were examined using the Doppler stethoscope. Venous reflux was detected in all patients with a clinically obvious varicocele and in 77% of patients where a varicocele was suspected but not clinically demonstrated. The incidence of bilateral varicoceles was 21%. The Doppler stethoscope showed that 20% of patients continued to have venous reflux post-operatively. It is concluded that the Doppler stethoscope is a useful instrument in the diagnosis of clinical varicoceles and in the assessment of post-operative results.

The rabies antigen quantitation reported here is based on the principle of an enzyme immuno micro assay (EIA) using antigen coated polystyrene microtiter plates. In a first step antibodies of known specificity are partially blocked by the antigen to be titrated; in a second step the free remaining antibodies are determined by EIA. Antirabies vaccines, purified virus or rabies glycoprotein were assayed by that micro-method in comparison with the double neutralization test in tissue culture. Moreover, we report results obtained by EIA on the rate of antigen bonding to a solid carrier in order to prepare immunoadsorbents and the usefulness of EIA to monitor specific immunoglobulin elution.
