Serum protein polymorphisms (GC, TF, and PI subtypes) in the Basque population of Alava.

Group-specific component (GC), transferrin (TF) and alpha-1-antitrypsin (PI) polymorphisms have been studied in the Basque population of Alava. The following gene frequencies were found: GC*1S = 0.525, GC*1F = 0.109, GC*2 = 0.366; TF*C1 = 0.793, TFC*2 = 0.171, TF*C3 = 0.032, TF*B = 0.003; PI*M1 = 0.611, PI*M2 = 0.164, PI*M3 = 0.101, PI*M4 = 0.019, PI*S = 0.101, PI*T = 0.003, PI*Z = 0.002. These results show that there is heterogeneity within the Basque population. In comparison with other populations from the Iberian Peninsula, the Basques from Alava show significant differences only for the PI system.

New contribution to the genetics of the Basques: heterogeneity in the esterase D subtype distribution.

A random sample of 1,491 individuals from three Basque provinces was studied for the red-cell esterase D (ESD) polymorphism by means of isoelectric focusing. The following allele frequencies were observed: Vizcaya, ESD*1 = 0.933, ESD*2 = 0.058, ESD*5 = 0.009; Guipuzcoa, ESD*1 = 0.938, ESD*2 = 0.053, ESD*5 = 0.009; and Alava, ESD*1 = 0.894, ESD*2 = 0.088, ESD*5 = 0.018. The Basques from Vizcaya and Guipuzcoa display the lowest values for allele ESD*5 of any European population studied to date. The value obtained for this allele in the Basque population of Alava is significantly higher than those found in the other two Basque samples. This, together with the fact that Basques from Alava display the lowest ESD*1 frequency of any Basque series, suggests that there are genetic differences between Basque provinces.

Distribution of the HLA-DQ alpha alleles and genotypes in a sample of a population from Barcelona (Spain).

Allele and genotype frequencies at the HLA-DQ alpha locus were determined by the use of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the reverse dot blot format. 6 HLA-DQ alpha alleles and 21 genotypes were detected among the 178 unrelated individuals from Barcelona. A fair agreement was found between observed and expected numbers assuming a Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. The Barcelona population is statistically similar to the Finnish population, but differs significantly from the Japanese, Black and Caucasoid series.

Study of the 3'-ApoB minisatellite performed by PCR in the population of Catalonia (northeast Spain).

Allele and genotype frequencies for the 3'-ApoB locus were determined in a population sample from Catalonia (northeast Spain) using PCR amplification and nonradioactive detection. In a total of 308 unrelated individuals, 16 alleles and 50 genotypes were observed. The 3'-ApoB locus demonstrated a heterozygosity of 80%. The distribution of genotypes is in agreement with expected values according to the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.

Microphakia associated with lens luxation in the cat.

Congenital defects of the lens are rare in the cat. In this report, two unrelated Siamese kittens, a four-month-old male and a six-month-old female, with microphakia are presented. Abnormally small lenses were associated with elongation and rupture of the ciliary processes, leading to lens subluxations and subsequent anterior luxations. To the authors' knowledge, this condition has been reported only once previously.

Doxepin incorporated into a dermatologic cream: an assessment of both doxepin antipruritic action and doxepin action as an inhibitor of papules, in allergen and histamine-caused pruritus.

"Doxederm", a 5% doxepin hydrochloride ("doxepin") cream, has been used for assessments on patients' response to histamine and allergens by means of a prick test. Parameters selected papule diameters, and pruritus intensity. Doxederm was applied: (a) immediately before tests, (b) 10 minutes after tests, and (c) 72 hours before tests. All test reactions have been compared to similar tests that had been performed with a placebo cream. Tests yielded the following findings: (1) a remarkable remission of pruritus when doxederm was applied according to above mentioned (a), (b), and (c) schedules; (2) no inhibition of papule size --should either antigens or histamine be administered, could be observed when doxederm was applied immediately before tests or 10 minutes after tests had been performed (p > 0.10 vs placebo); (3) an evident remission of papules when doxederm had been applied 72 hours before tests were performed. No difference, however, could be detected with patientś forearms placebo cream had been applied whereon (difference among previously observed papules, and papules observed 72 after doxederm application: p > 0.005. Difference between doxederm and placebo: p > 0.10). Pursuant to the above mentioned observations, it can be suggested that doxederm evidences a highly siwft response on pruritus. Doxederm local effect, however, does not alter histaminic responses. Responses, however, are likely to be altered after a doxederm percutaneous absorption.

[Influence of radiotherapy on the permeability of the internal jugular veins after functional neck dissection].

The influence of postoperative radiotherapy (RT) on the patency and blood flow of the internal jugular veins (IJV) after functional neck dissection (FND) was assessed in a prospective study. Doppler ultrasonography of the IJV was performed before and after surgery. Fifty-four FND were evaluated in 29 oncological patients who underwent surgery between September 1994 and February 1997. Twelve IJV received postoperative RT. There were no cases of thrombosis before or after surgery in any case. Blood-flow speed in the right Valsalva maneuver was the only parameter affected in irradiated patients.

Distribution of GC, PI and TF polymorphisms in a Spanish population sample from central Pyrenees.

GC-, PI-, and TF-subtype determinations have been performed in a population from Central Pyrenees. The observed allele frequencies are as follows: GC*1F = 0.0582, GC*1S = 0.6199, GC*2 = 0.3219; PI*M1 = 0.6164, PI*M2 = 0.1884, PI*M3 = 0.0308, PI*M4 = 0.0171, PI*S = 0.1473 and TF*C1 = 0.7740, TF*C2 = 0.1712, TF*C3 = 0.0479, TF*B = 0.0069. In spite of the extreme values found for some alleles of the GC and PI systems, the data of the sample analyzed can be considered similar to those described in other populations of the Iberian Peninsula.

[Invasive mycoses in liver transplantation].

Seventy three adults underwent orthotopic liver transplantations between February 1987 and November 1989 and were followed (54 retrospectively and 19 in a prospective study) with the aim of establishing the incidence of deep mycoses (3 disseminated candidiasis due to C. albicans, 1 invasive aspergillosis due to A. fumigatus and 1 invasive pulmonary aspergillosis due to A. niger and A. fumigatus). 4/5 of these infections occurred in the first month after transplantation. All the patients were associated with the following clinical risk factors: previous use of wide spectrum antibiotics (5/5); more than 1 abdominal laparotomy (4/5), due to primary failure of the graft (3/4) and thrombosis of the hepatic artery (1/4). Two of the three patients [corrected] with invasive candidiasis had previous episodes of documented fungemia. 24 patients of the group who didn't show MIP had some risk factor which in all of them was the previous use of high dose steroids and/or of wide spectrum antibiotics, in addition to the used in surgical prophylaxis. In our series, the one risk factor associated with MIP was more than one previous laparotomy (p less than 0.001). Other significant associated infections were 3 bacterial sepsis (2 due to Enterococcus faecalis and 1 due to Staphylococcus epidermidis) and one viral (Cytomegalovirus viremia). The mortality rate was 100%, however the cause of death was multifactorial.
