[Bilateral stage nephrectomy as a preparation for kidney transplantation].

The indication for nephrectomy prior to kidney transplantation has changed. Contrary to the formerly in nearly all transplantation centres practiced one-time two-sided nephrectomy, at present the removal of the patient's own kidneys prior to transplantation is done only if strictly indicated. In contrast to other transplantation centres which, if indicated, still today carry out bilateral nephrectomy prior to transplantation is done only if strictly indicated. In contrast to other transplantation centres which, if indicated, still today carry out bilateral nephrectomy prior to transplantation, since 1977 the transplantation centre of Munich prefers the two-time bilateral nephrectomy. Technique, surgical approach, indication and results of our method are presented. In the course of the discussion the disadvantages of the one-time bilateral nephrectomy are opposed to the advantages of the two-time method.

In-vivo modulation of macrophage functions by herpes simplex virus type 2 in resistant and sensitive inbred mouse strains.

Intra-peritoneal (i.p.) infection of mice with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV 2) attracted macrophages into the peritoneum. Macrophages from moderately and highly HSV 2 resistant mouse strains expressed elevated phagocytosis activity 24 hours after injection. Stimulation of phagocytosis in low resistant strains was generally less effective or absent. This was, in some experiments, due to the fact that macrophages were already highly activated before the experimental infection. I.p. infection also caused HSV replication in the adherent peritoneal exudate cell (PEC) population. The capacity of macrophages supporting HSV 2 replication was low in three of four resistant mouse strains and high in all moderately and highly susceptible and in one of the resistant (SJL) strains when determined 24 hours after infection. Four different F1 hybrids between resistant and susceptible strains exhibited significantly lower yields of virus-producing macrophages than the HSV-sensitive parent. One hybrid between two HSV-susceptible lines restricted virus replication in the PEC populations better than both parental strains.

[Local treatment of urethral condylomata by 5-fluorouracil].

4 male patients suffering from urethral condylomata were treated with local 5-Fluorouracil. 3 different ways of application were used: Gel, Suppositories and Cream (5%). Treatment for 5.2 weeks on the average lead to disappearance of the condylomata in all patients. Recurrence of the disease was not observed during the following 6 months. Side-effects did not appear.

[Renal transplantation in Munich. Present status (author's transl)].

In the last four years 125 renal transplantations were performed at the Transplantation Center in Munich. The mortality rate after transplantation could be lowered to below 10% in the first year; on the other hand the rate of loss of transplants observed in the Center was 40% in the same period. After mentioning the individual surgical complications following renal transplantation with reference to our own patients. The effect of blood transfusions on the survival time of the transplant is dealt with. It was found that transplant survival rate increased with the rise in the number of blood transfusions before the transplantation.

The effect of a protein-bound polysaccharide from Coriolus versicolor on immunological parameters and experimental infections in mice.

The influence of PSK, a protein bound polysaccharide from Coriolus versicolor on various immunological parameters was studied, PSK was found to enhance B cell activity as measured by the spleen plaque-forming cell assay in mice, and to stimulate mouse macrophages as determined by an enhancement of carbon clearance and an increase in the phagocytosis of opsonized sheep red blood cells by peritoneal mouse macrophages in vitro. The activation of mouse macrophages by PSK appeared to correlate with the therapeutic effects of the compound. In mice made granulocytopenic with cyclophosphamide and subsequently infected with a variety of garm-negative pathogens or with Candida albicans, PSK prolonged the average survival time of the animals. The compound also led to a drastic increase in the number of animals surviving such experimental infections as compared to untreated controls. Possible mechanisms responsible for these protective effects by PSK are discussed.
