In 88 cases out of 126 (70%), antibodies to rubella were found by inhibition of viral hemagglutination in wild pigeons collected in the area of Nice. When experimentally infected with live virus, the rubella negative pigeons develop HI antibodies, thus showing that the virus replicates in these birds. The epidemiological meanings of these findings are considered.
The separation of IgM globulins by affinity chromatography has been used for serodiagnosis of primary infections with rubella or measles virus. IgM antibody activity levels are similar to those obtained when the separation has been performed by ultracentrifugation. The results of 50 cases examined by the two separation methods are in agreement. However, affinity chromatography is more specific than gel filtration methods and requires a smaller amount of serum. The anti-human IgM globulins, covalently bound to activated Sepharose, maintain their binding capacity to IgM for a long period; and the same gel could be used more than 40 times. Due to its specificity, sensitivity and reliability, affinity chromatography is an efficient tool for routine laboratory diagnosis of a recent primary infection.
l-Arginine (1 M) eluted measles virus adsorbed on monkey erythrocytes without affecting the infectious and hemagglutinating activities of the virus. This phenomenon was also observed for encephalomyocarditis virus and Newcastle disease virus.
Ouabain, which inhibits specifically membrane-bound ATPase activity, also inhibits the establishment of the antiviral state induced by interferon. Once the antiviral state is established, ouabain is ineffective. This inhibitory effect is reversed by adding Na/K ions to the cells. On the contrary, interferon production is unaffected by the same concentrations of ouabain. It is of interest that in such interferon-yielding cells, ouabain decreases the antiviral state.
