[Cis-platinum-induced peripheral neuropathy. One case (author's transl)].

A case of peripheral neuropathy secondary to cis-platinum therapy is reported. On the basis of electrophysiological studies and of biopsies, the predominantly sensory disorders observed (paraesthesias, pain, sensory ataxia) could be ascribed to axonal degeneration. This exceptional complication of cis-platinum therapy deserves to be borne in mind, since the drug is increasingly used, notably in genital cancers.

Sex vesicle-associated nucleolar organizers in mouse spermatocytes: localization, structure, and function.

Selective silver staining demonstrated that autosomal bivalents containing transcriptively active nucleolar organizers associated with the sex vesicle during pachytene of mouse spermatocytes. Later in pachytene, the nucleolar organizers covered the portion of the sex vesicle furthest from the attachment to the nuclear envelope. Hybridization in situ revealed the presence of rDNA in the silver-positive material. The nucleolus, formed from an autosomal bivalent, exhibited a large fibrillar center surrounded by an electron-opaque fibrillar zone. The nucleolar association with the sex vesicle was studied at early, middle, and late pachytene by hybridization in situ, NOR silver staining, and electron microscopy. These observations enabled us to further define the relationships of the nucleolar components with the X-Y pair.

[Clinical pharmacokinetics of flunitrazepam (Nacrozep) in intensive care patient (preliminary results)].

A protocol of repeated I. V. injections of flunitrazepam was constructed by mathematical simulation on the basis of pharmacokinetic data obtained from single intravenous injections given to healthy subjects. This protocol would given serum blood levels equal to 15 ng . ml-1, rapidly and compatible with long term artificial ventilation, thanks to the pharmacological action of flunitrazepam. Four patients in the ICU benefited from this protocol. The levels desired were not reached but in two cases out of four it was possible to continue artificial ventilation without the addition of any other drug. Furthermore it was possible to show that the three compartment model developed from healthy subjects remains valid in pathological circumstances. A second protocol based on pharmacokinetic data from four patients should allow us to obtain the objective aimed at.

[Psychic effects of drugs prescribed for hypertensive patients. An experiment of the Regional Drug Monitoring Center in Marseilles].

The authors present typical observations of behavioural adverse effects induced by anti-hypertensive drugs and reported to the Marseilles Regional Center of Pharmacovigilance. These effects include: sleep disorders, confusion, psychotic reactions and depression. Surprisingly, these effects seem to be very rarely reported; this is perhaps due to a tricky assessment of the causal relationship: many factors (hypertension, other diseases, other drugs) can have an influence on these troubles.

[The value of laparoscopy. Results of 600 studies performed in an internal medicine department at the General Hospital of Dakar].

600 laparoscopic examinations were performed in an Internal Medicine Department of the general Hospital Dakar (Senegal) from 1984 to 1989 in 402 males and 198 females aged from 7 to 82 years. This examination of simple and quick procedure well tolerated under simple premedication, should be performed only after diffusion of the pneumoperitoneum, per- foration being the major risk. Even if liver cell carcinoma and cirrhosis represent more than an half of the examined cases (52%) due to their high frequency, exploration of peritoneal pathology is the best indication for laparoscopy. Thanks to laparoscopy, 68 tuberculosis, 28 peritoneal carcinomatosis and 11 infectious peri-hepatitis were diagnosed. It remains a major examination perfectly adapted to studies of the so-frequent hepato-peritoneal pathology in Black Africa]
