[Morphologic correlates in antitumor immunity. VII. Plasmocytes in the stroma of carcinoma].

Prevalence of plasmacytes in stromal reaction was estimated in carcinoma of oral cavity, stomach, breast, uterine cervix and lung. Possible prognostic importance of the feature was evaluated. Predominance of plasmacytes was lacking in the stomach carcinoma. In oral, breast and uterine carcinomas it occurred without any correlation to survival rates. The lack of predominating plasmacytes in lung carcinomas was a bad prognostic sign. This reaction occurred only in groups with long survival rates.

Carcinoma↗

[Mastocytes in the process of cancerogenesis. I. Study of experimental model systems].

Changing numbers of mast cells were observed in precancerous and cancerous lesions of the gut in mice treated by 1, 2-dimethylhydrazine dihydrochloride. The study included 18 samples of abnormal and atypical epithelium, 14 samples of preinvasive carcinoma, 15 samples of infiltrative carcinoma, and 12 control samples from untreated mice. Carcinogenesis was accompanied by a significant increase of mast cell numbers culminating in preinvasive carcinoma. A decrease of mast cells followed in fully developed adenocarcinomas up to numbers comparable to but more variable than those found in abnormal and atypical epithelium.

Adenocarcinoma↗

[Mastocytes in the process of cancerogenesis. II. Precancerous conditions and carcinomas of the uterine cervix].

A standard evaluation of mast cell numbers was performed in 110 cases of cervical precanceroses and carcinomas in comparison with bioptic samples without any pathologic lesion. Pathologic lesions were accompanied by an increase of mast cell numbers--except cases with abnormal epithelium. Peak numbers were found in preinvasive carcinoma. Mast cell numbers in invasive carcinoma were beyond an average level of control samples but obviously under those in preinvasive carcinoma.

Carcinoma, Squamous Cell↗

Local eosinophilia in stroma of tumors related to prognosis.

The stromal reactions of oral, gastric, breast, and cervical carcinomas were uniformly examined for the presence of eosinophilic granulocytes. Their numbers were expressed in terms of a three-grade scale. While in the carcinomas of the uterine cervix a positive correlation between the quantity of the reaction and survival rate was found, in the other groups of patients eosinophilic granulocytes occurred only as a small admixture in a limited number of cases.

Breast Neoplasms↗

[Morphological correlates of anti-tumor immunity. IV. Mastocytes in regional lymph nodes].

Mastocytes of regional lymph nodes were studied in three groups of oncological patients suffering from cancer of stomach, breast or lung. Lymph nodes in all three groups showed varied numbers of mastocytes; top figures were found in stomach cancer. There was a convincing relation of lymph node mastocyte number neither to lymphatic tissue reaction (predominant lymphocytes, predominant germinal centres, lymphocyte depletion, sinus histiocytosis, unstimulated lymph node) nor to frequency of secondaries nor to patient survival rate.
