A case of Waldenström's macroglobulinemia in a 63-year-old man is presented. The clinical course was complicated by pulmonary infiltration classified by biopsy as immunocytoma. The clinical findings and therapeutic possibilities in this rare case of Waldenström's macroglobulinemia with with pulmonary complications are discussed in the light of the literature.

A case of diffused malignant mesothelioma of the peritoneum in a 64-year-old man is presented. This mesothelioma, of the papillary type, was complicated, after a year without significant clinical symptoms, by the development of ascites and obstructive upper bowel ileus. Physiological-anatomical and clinical aspects, as well as special radiologic findings and therapeutic regimens, are discussed in the light of the literature. It is recommended that all patients with malignant mesothelioma of the peritoneum be treated by total abdominal irradiation and intreperitoneal instillation of colloid P32.
Estrogene has a tonicising effect upon urethra musculature. There is also the same demonstrable influence of alpha-receptor stimulating drugs upon the urethra pressure profile. After preliminary treatment with estrogene, there is a considerably stronger tonicising effect of alpha-stimulating drugs than without such a treatment. So the combination of estrogene and alpha-stimulating drugs seems a useful addition to the conservative treatment of stress incontinence.
Percutaneous absorption of 6alpha,9-difluor-11beta-hydroxy-16alpha-methyl-21-valeryloxy-1,4-pregnadience-3,20-dione (diflucortolone valerate, DFV, Nerisona), betamethasone 17-valerate (BV), beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) and fluocinolone acetonide (FA) by damaged skin was examined on the backs of 4 healthy males from whom the stratum corneum had been removed by "stripping". The determination of percutaneous absorption was performed on the one hand by a method employing radioactive labelled compounds (DFV, BV) and measuring the elimination with the urine and faeces and on the other hand by photometric determination (DFV, BV, BD, fa) of the corticoid remaining on the skin immediately following application and at the end of a 24-h period of exposure. Direct measurement of the radioactivity in the urine and faeces revealed that percutaneous absorption from a new W/O emulsion takes place up to 2.2+/-0.8% in the case of DFV (0.1%) and to at least 12.2+/-3.3% in the case of BV (0.12%) within 24 h. The determination of percutaneous absorption via recovery from the skin produced the following results for the 4 corticoid preparations examined: DFV (14.8+/-4.2%) and BDP (14.0+/-4.3%) approximately equal, BV (23.5+/-4.1%) a marked increase and FA (39.2+/-2.4%) the highest level of absorption. This order for percutaneous absorption appears to correlate to the frequency of systemic side effects.

Studies of the fluorescence polarization of 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene in membranes of normal, transformed, and revertant 3T3 cells allowed estimation of microviscosities (eta) of the lipid bilayers of these cells. Fluorescence polarization values observed with normal cells were significantly lower than those observed with cells transformed either by polyoma virus or by simian virus 40. The values of fluorescence polarization obtained with revertant Py6R1 cells were lower than those obtained with the normal cells. The calculated microviscosities (eta) show a 50% increase upon transformation. Possible correlations between the bilayer viscosity and the mobility of the receptors in the membrane are discussed.

The two test series were carried out with the dilatometer TMA 500 (of Haereus company). The measurements for thermic expansion are easily reproducible, not so for setting expansion. The recorded setting expansion values are identical with the manufacturers' data given for Luster Cast, Aurovest, and Deguvest HFG, among the thermic expansion values only those for Luster Cast are in line with the data given; the values given for Bayer DC are most different from those we found.
