HLA typing in couples with repetitive abortion.

Highly inbred strains of mice have a reduced reproductive capacity. In contrast, an increased capacity is associated with an immune response to placental antigens. In humans, repeated miscarriages seem to be associated to a higher frequency of HLA allele BW35. Twenty couples with repetitive spontaneous abortions of unknown etiology and 20 control couples with normal fertility were HLA typed. The sera of wives of infertile couples were tested against the husbands lymphocytes in complement dependent lympholysis test in order to detect anti-paternal HLA antibodies. The data show an HLA significant compatibility between the husbands and the wives with a history of repetitive spontaneous abortions. The best probability of evaluating different loci is that of HLA-A (p less than 0.01). The frequency of HLA-BW35 in women with repeated miscarriages is higher than in control women or than in the general Italian population. In infertile couples, all the sera collected from the wife were negative against the husband lymphocytes.

Immunodiagnosis in gynaecologic oncology: possibilities and limitations.

The theory of Immunological Surveillance suggested by Burnet has been the object of many criticisms over the last years, but the study and the clinical applications of tumours immunology still show a remarkable interest with attracting prospects for the future. Some markers for human tumours cells, detected by RIA assay (TA4 for cervical cancer, CEA for ovarian cancer and alpha-FP for Endodermal Sinus Tumour) allow accuracy in neoplastic patients. The study of the tumoural patient's immunologic status could point out diagnostic and prognostic criteria and is likely to be used in the future for screening groups at risk for developing neoplasia.

Vaginal and endocervical bacterial contamination in IUD users.

The use of intrauterine devices is clearly related to a new aspect of infective pathology: bacterial contamination of the uterine cavity and its repercussions throughout the genital apparatus. Therefore the Authors decided to carry out a study of the vaginal and endocervical flora of 61 IUD users. This study has shown that pathogenic germs are present to a significant extent (82.3%) even when no clinical symptoms can be detected. The Group B streptococcus was detected in a high number of cases (10.6%) in the vaginal (9.8%) or endocervical tampon (11.5%).

Determination of plasmatic copper and zinc in uncomplicated pregnancies.

The copper and zinc plasmatic concentrations were determined in a group of 50 pregnant women and in a control group. We found higher copper and lower zinc plasmatic levels in pregnancy than in control group. No correlation was found between the copper and zinc plasmatic levels and the weeks of pregnancy.

Microinvasive carcinoma of the vulva.

A case of microcarcinoma of the vulva (depth of invasion less than 5 mm) with an unexpected natural history is reported. The 338 cases, up today, reported in literature are reviewed and therapeutical protocols discussed.

T-lymphocyte subpopulations in pregnancy.

T-lymphocyte subpopulations were evaluated in 44 pregnant women at different stages of gestation by means of monoclonal antibodies. A total of 32 healthy women of the same age served as a control group. OKT3-positive cells (more than 95% of the circulating T-lymphocytes) decrease markedly in pregnancy between the 14th and the 28th week. Such a decrease seems to be due to a specific lowering in the number of OKT4-positive cells (which seem to represent helper T-lymphocytes). OKT8-positive cells (which seem to represent cytotoxic-suppressor T-lymphocytes) show no meaningful alteration. Possibly due to helper decrease, maternal immunity is impaired between the 14th and 28th week.

T-lymphocyte subsets in normal menstrual cycle.

OKT3, OKT4, OKT8 positive cells levels were evaluated in 27 healthy volunteers, during preovulatory phase, luteal phase and menstrual period. OKT3, OKT4 positive cells showed no statistical difference over the three periods, while OKT8 positive cells decrease in preovulatory phase compared to both luteal phase (p less than 0.05) and menstrual period (p less than 0.02). A possible immunoregulatory function of oestrogens is discussed.
