Hospitals across the country are busy reconfiguring their delivery systems to improve patient care delivery. In the process, they are overhauling their organizational structures, reaching out to other institutions for input and participation, and embracing local communities. Many hospital executives are also finding that the path itself is at least as interesting and valuable as the end result.
These days, simply sending middle managers off to management courses is a thing of the past at some hospitals. Those institutions have created in-house management "schools" that are strengthening those hospitals' corporate cultures in the process.

The first month a new senior executive is on the job presents a critical opportunity to integrate him or her into a hospital's corporate culture. But human resources experts say hospital administrators often let this increasingly important opportunity slip by. The first month on the job, they say, should serve as a strategic orientation for the new hire.
The nursing profession is changing, the medical profession is changing, the professional job market is changing, and hospitals are changing. So it should come as no surprise to anyone that nurse-physician relations are also undergoing considerable changes these days. And although the relationship between hospital nurses and physicians has been a topic of ongoing concern for hospital executives for years, only recently has its improvement become an action item. Experts say a number of factors have brought new opportunity to the quest: the push for cost containment, the rising acuity of patients, continuing nursing shortages, societal and workplace changes, and, most of all, the drive toward systemwide quality in hospitals.
It's a phenomenon affecting hospitals as much as other segments of the labor market: the growth of the so-called sandwich generation, those working adults who must care for both children and elderly parents. As more and more baby boomers join this group, their need for dependent care assistance is expected to grow, according to hospital executives.
