Oral health of South African Black (Xhosa) mine recruits.

The oral health of 100 rural Black Xhosa men commencing employment on the gold mines was examined. Dental caries were present in 68%, the mean DMFT per mouth was 2.5 (s.d. 2.8) while the mean DMFT per carious mouth was 3.7 (s.d. 2.7). Oral hygiene was good and periodontal disease uncommon. Although the frequency of individuals with dental caries has increased since studies on similar groups were made 40 years ago, the severity of the disease in affected individuals has remained static.

Bony defects in dried Bantu mandibles.

Forty-three dried South African Bantu mandibles were examined visually and radiographically for the frequencies of occurrence of apical defects, bifurcation involvements, dehiscences, and fenestrations. Statistical evaluation of the data revealed no significant discrepancy between the visual and radiographic findings.

Nitrous oxide contamination in dental surgeries using relative analgesia.

The concentrations of nitrous oxide were determined at various positions in four dental surgeries in which nitrous oxide sedation was used without scavenging. Contamination was present in all the surgeries, the greatest concentration being recorded at the dentist's nose and the least in the peripheral air. The reception area adjoining the surgeries was found also to be contaminated by nitrous oxide.

Dental caries in South African white children aged 1-5 years.

The dentitions of 499 white preschoolchildren aged 1-5 years from a low fluoride area were examined with mirror and probe. The dmft values ranged from 1.0 +/- 2.0 at 1 year of age to 5.1 +/- 4.5 at 5 years of age while the overall mean for the group was 3.7 +/- 4.1. ""Rampant" caries prevalence varied according to the definition used. It is suggested that for epidemiologic studies rampant caries should be defined as a dmft value of 5 or more and that labial caries should be regarded as a specific entity.

Dental caries in rural and urban black preschoolchildren.

The dentitions of 439 rural and 192 urban black children aged 1-5 years were examined with mirror and probe. Dental caries was common and the percentage prevalence and dmft values were similar in children of 1-3 years in both groups. At 4 years of age there was a twofold increase in dental caries in the urban children to reach a dmft score significantly greater than that in the rural children (P less than 0.01). Labial caries was common in rural children but rare in urban children while rampant caries (dmft greater than or equal to 5) exhibited the opposite pattern.

The role of laboratory animals in dental research.

In dental research, in common with other forms of scientific research, the use of laboratory animals is necessary to carry out many investigations that may not be undertaken on man, and to control biological variability. In South Africa the main experimental animals used in dental research are rats and vervet monkeys, although other species such as dogs and baboons have been used. This paper lists examples of published dental research carried out in laboratory animals in South Africa in the fields of bone healing, dental caries, dental materials, growth studies, oral cancer, oral mucosa and periodontal disease investigations.

The effect of a proteolytic enzyem mixture (Orenzyme-Forte) on experimentally induced pulpitis.

A proteolytic enzyme mixture, Orenzyme-Forte, containing trypsin, chymotrypsin, and ribonuclease was used to treat experimentally induced pulpitis in the teeth of three monkeys. Assessment by means of the criteria of Stanley showed that the enzyme mixture induced better healing than a zinc oxide--eugenol dressing. When the two were used simultaneously, a synergistic effect was seen. We suggest that this enzyme mixture may be useful in clinical practice in the treatment of pulpitis.
