Iron overload in Africa was previously regarded as purely due to excessive iron in traditional beer, but we recently found evidence that transferrin saturation and unsaturated iron binding capacity may be influenced by an interaction between dietary iron content and a gene distinct from any HLA-linked locus. To determine if serum ferritin follows a genetic pattern and to confirm our previous observations, we studied an additional 351 Zimbabweans and South Africans from 45 families ranging in size from two to 54 members. Iron status was characterized with repeated morning measurements of serum ferritin, transferrin saturation, and unsaturated iron binding capacity after supplementation with vitamin C. For each measure of iron status, segregation analysis was consistent with an interaction between a postulated iron-loading gene and dietary iron content (P < .01). In the most likely model, transferrin saturation is 75% and serum ferritin is 985 micrograms/L in a 40-year-old male heterozygote with an estimated beer consumption of 10,000 L, whereas the saturation is 36% and serum ferritin is 233 micrograms/L in an unaffected individual with identical age, sex, and beer consumption. This segregation analysis provides further evidence for a genetic influence on iron overload in Africans.

Children can learn aspects of the meaning of a new word on the basis of only a few incidental exposures and can retain this knowledge for a long period-a process dubbed 'fast mapping". It is often maintained that fast mapping is the result of a dedicated language mechanism, but it is possible that this same capacity might apply in domains other than language learning. Here we present two experiments in which three- and four-year-old children and adults were taught a novel name and a novel fact about an object, and were tested on their retention immediately, after a 1-week delay or after a 1-month delay. Our findings show that fast mapping is not limited to word learning, suggesting that the capacity to learn and retain new words is the result of learning and memory abilities that are not specific to language.
Previous research has shown that children go through a stage in which they know that the number words each refer to a distinct numerosity, yet do not know WHICH numerosity each number word picks out (Wynn, 1992). How do children attain this level of knowledge? We explore the possibility that particular properties of how number words are used within sentences inform children of the semantic class to which they belong. An analysis of transcripts of the spontaneous speech of three one- and two-year-old children and their parents (from the CHILDES database; MacWhinney & Snow, 1990) suggests that the relevant cues are available as input in parents' speech to children, and that children generally honour these properties of number words in their own speech. Implications of this proposal for word learning more generally are discussed.

AIM: To study the efficacy and safety of intraoperative 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in Afro-Caribbean patients. METHODS: The results of trabeculectomy in 18 eyes of 18 Afro-Caribbean patients in whom a sponge soaked in 25 mg/ml solution of 5-FU was applied between Tenon's capsule and sclera for 5 minutes before excision of the trabecula were compared with 16 eyes of 16 Afro-Caribbean patients matched for age, quantity, and duration of preoperative medications, who underwent trabeculectomy without 5-FU. RESULTS: The mean postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) at 1 month was 15.6 (SD 6.1) mm Hg in the 5-FU group and 18.0 (5.2) mm Hg in the control group (p = 0.15). There was no significant difference in the IOP at 6, 12, 15, 18, and 24 months in the two groups. Success rate at 18 months defined as an IOP less than or equal to 21 mm Hg with no adjunctive medication was 56% in the 5-FU group and 55% in the control group. No major complications were noted in either group. CONCLUSION: Intraoperative sponge 5-FU alone is safe but does not appear to decrease the risk of failure of trabeculectomy in Afro-Caribbeans.

What determines our intuitions as to which objects are members of specific artifact kinds? Prior research suggests that factors such as physical appearance, current use, and intended function are not at the core of concepts such as chair, clock and pawn. The theory presented here, based on Levinson's (1993) intentional-historical theory of our concept of art, is that we determine that something is a member of a given artifact kind by inferring that it was successfully created with the intention to belong to that kind. This theory can explain why some properties (such as shape) are more important than others (such as color) when we determine kind membership and can account for why certain objects are judged to be members of artifact kinds even though they are highly dissimilar from other members of the kinds. It can also provide a framework for explaining the conditions under which broken objects cease to be members of their kinds and new artifacts can come into existence. This account of our understanding of artifact concepts is argued to be consistent with more general "essentialist" theories of our understanding of concepts corresponding to proper names and natural kind terms.
