[Sonography of blunt abdominal trauma (author's transl)].

Sonographic examination of the abdomen after blunt abdominal trauma represents a rapid and effective diagnostic method without bothering the patient. It has proved its value not only in the confirmation or exclusion of free fluid in the abdomen caused by liver of spleen rupture, but also in such cases actually it replaces peritoneal lavage or exploratory laparotomy. It is also qualified for diagnosis of intraparenchymal or subcapsular hemorrhages, intraperitoneal as well as retroperitoneal and for follow up. In particular delayed bleedings including the risk of a retarded organ rupture can be detected early. A failure rate of 1.4% in 282 sonographically examined cases of blunt abdominal trauma further confirms the reliability of this method.

[Treatment of renovascular hypertension by catheter dilatation (author's transl)].

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in renal artery obstructions was performed in 10 cases. In 7 patients the hypertension was successfully treated and in one patient renal function could be restored. The procedure can be applied in atherosclerotic and fibromuscular stenoses as well as in stenosis of kidney grafts. In our opinion catheter dilatation should be prefered to vascular surgery, because it is efficient and inexpensive and has a low risk. Operation should be reserved to cases untreatable with angioplasty.

[Soft tissue hemorrhage in acute pelvic vein thrombosis. A rare phlebographic diagnosis (author's transl)].

Clinically suspected deep leg--and/or pelvic vein thrombosis nowadays is usually evaluated by ascending phlebography. This paper demonstrates the unusual additional finding of soft tissue hemorrhage--shown by Phlebography--in a 53 year old female suffering from acute pelvic vein thrombosis. A possible pathophysiologic mechanism for this hemorrhage is being discussed briefly.

Acute Disease↗

[Spontaneous pneumoperitoneum in progressive systemic sclerosis (generalized scleroderma)].

In a twenty-nine year old female patient with progressive systemic sclerosis (scleroderma) (PSS) and an impressing involvement of the intestine (disturbance of the oesophageal motility, pseudo-obstruction, malabsorption) a spontaneous, asymptomatic pneumoperitoneum is observed. Perforation or pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) could not be proved. The possible pathogenesis, course, prognosis and therapy of this rare complication are discussed.

The clinical trial of TOMOTRON--a new electronic device--and eight months' clinical experience.

We have been using digital tomography (TOMOTRON) clinically for eight months. Its advantages include savings in both time and dose, good image quality through increased contrast, and improved magnification and image postprocessing compared with conventional tomography. However, lower image resolution and small image sections are the disadvantages of digital tomography. Weighing these advantages and disadvantages by our experience, the diagnostic accuracy of digital tomography is higher than conventional tomography, particularly in skeletal studies.
