We report on our observations following our first cochlear-implant operation in a patient, and have found that the implantation of a single electrode can allow the patient to realize background noise.
The transtemporal extradural approach to the internal auditory canal is made easier by use of certain definite landmarks. These, which are novel, can be demonstrated with the use of a newly developed instrument that is attached to the dura retractor.

The clinically important anatomy and morphology of the facial nerve is reviewed. The nuclei, and the supranuclear and internuclear connections are described, and the facial canal, its dehiscences and its relation with the nerve are discussed in detail.
A mechanism of teaching is described which enables students in their examination of the ear to recognise certain diseases. Pathological changes of the tympanic membrane can only be recognised by correct observation.
