Multispectral imaging microscope with millisecond time resolution.

A new multispectral imaging microscope with micrometer spatial resolution and millisecond temporal resolution has been developed. The imaging microscope is based on the use of an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) for spectral tuning and a progressive scan camera capable of snapshot operation for recording. It can operate in two modes: images are recorded as a function of time or wavelength. When operated as a function of time, the microscope is configured so that as many images as possible are recorded, grabbed, and stored per one wavelength. Upon completion, the AOTF is scanned to a new wavelength, and a new set of images are recorded. Up to 33 images/ second (i.e., 30 ms/image) can be recorded in this mode. In the other configuration, the recording wavelength is rapidly scanned (by means of the AOTF) and only one image is rapidly recorded, grabbed, and stored for each wavelength. Because additional time is needed to scan the AOTF, the maximum number of images can be grabbed in this case is 16 frames/s. Preliminary applications of the imaging microscope include measurements of photoinduced changes of a single unit cell in temperature-sensitive cholesteric liquid crystals as a function of time and wavelength. The changes were found to be varied with time and wavelength. Interestingly, the photoinduced changes of unit cells in the liquid crystal are not the same but different from cell to cell. This imaging microscope is particularly useful for measurements of small-size samples that undergo rapid chemical or biochemical reactions, e.g., activities of a single biological cell.

The effectiveness of cryoendoscopic treatment for tubal infertility.

Seventy-three women experienced bilateral proximal tubal occlusion caused by adhesions or polyps arising from the uterotubal junction in at least one tube. There were no other identifiable causes of infertility. All patients were treated with cryosurgery, which restored tubal patency in 61 (83.6%). Of 45 women with restored patency, who were followed 6 to 12 months, 20 (27.4% of 73) conceived and 16 (21.9%) delivered viable babies.

Using Drugs with Immunomodulatory Properties for the Treatment of Adenomyosis

Based on the statement that immune system disorders play an important role in the pathogenesis of endometriosis, we evaluated a new method of treatment. This approach permitted subsequent administration of noretisteron acetate and myelopid (polypeptide compound from the bone marrow of mammals) for the treatment of 63 women with adenomyosis and endometrial hyperplasia. In total, 30 women were given noretisteron only; 28, noretisteron and myelopid; and 5 myelopid only. All patients were managed by HSG, hysteroscopy, laparoscopy, and the study of their hormonal and immune systems. A follow-up between 6 and 9 months after treatment revealed total pain relief in 29 patients, and partial relief in 4, who received myelopid. In this group, normal endometrium appeared in 21 (63.6%) cases with regression of endometriosis in 19 (57.5%). This therapeutic strategy significantly improved the results in comparison to the results of treatment with noretisteron acetate only.

Combined Laparoscopic Cryosurgery in the Treatment of Polycystic Ovarian Disease

This paper presents the results of treating 32 infertile women afflicted with polycystic ovarian disease by combined laparoscopic cryosurgery. Each of these patients had been resistant to the induction of ovulation with clomiphene. Cryosurgery was performed under laparoscopic control with a special cryosurgical probe. Prior to freezing, we did a biopsy of each patient's ovaries and, in 13 cases, enucleation of the cyst. In 6 to 14 months after surgery, normalization of the menstrual cycle occurred in 24 women. The level of steroid hormones, which were studied in the first and second parts of the menstrual cycle before and after surgery, rose to normal (P<0.05; P<0.01). Of the total number of women, 5 had conceived after 3 months, 12 after 6 months, and 3 after 14 months. We conclude that combined laparoscopic cryosurgery is an effective method of treatment for polycystic ovarian disease.
