Gastrointestinal parasitoses discovered in agricultural workers in South Bohemia, Czechoslovakia.

In the years from 1975 to 1982 1,750 persons, mostly employed by agricultural enterprises in the South Bohemian Region in Czechoslovakia, were examined. We discovered seven species of parasites: Taenia saginata in 0.3%, Enterobius vermicularis in 10.1%, Giardia lamblia in 1.0%, Endolimax nana in 0.8%, Entamoeba coli in 0.7%, Entamoeba hartmanni in 0.2%, and Chilomastix mesnili in 0.5%. The greatest number of parasites was found in students of the Secondary agricultural and technical school. Only two species of parasites were diagnosed in children of the employees. The incidence of E. vermicularis was 75% in children, in adult employees of agricultural enterprises, however, only 9.8%.

[The morphology of the eggs of Paragonimus westermani (Trematoda)].

The entire shape, surface structure and the details in operculum of the eggs of Paragonimus westermani imported to Czechoslovakia by one Korean and three Vietnamese were examined by light and scanning electron microscopy with emphasis on differential diagnostics. Differences distinguishing eggs of P. westermani from other species of this fluke parasitizing in man are briefly discussed.

Histopathological diagnostics of liver amoebiasis in Cambodia.

Results of histopathological examination of a solitary chronical amoebic abscess in the liver of a patient from Cambodia are described. The abscess was at a proliferously reparative phase and Entamoeba histolytica was detected at the border between the necrosis and inner wall of abscess, as well as in the proper non-specific granulation tissue of the inner layers of abscess capsule. A differential diagnosis of the amoebic abscess from similar parasitary or pseudoparasitary liver lesions and differential diagnosis of amoebae in histological sections are given. For orientation examinations of the liver tissue for the presence of amoebae the authors recommend the impregnation after Grocott and staining with Goldner's trichrome for a more detailed evaluation of histological sections.

[Mass occurrence of mycotic tracheitis in chickens].

An enzootic of chick mycosis, caused by the spores of the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus, is described. The mycotic infection affected the respiratory tract of the birds; pathological changes were located mainly in the region of the trachea. The changes had the nature of diphtheroid necrotic inflammation destroying the mucous membrane and causing almost an obstruction of the trachea. Deposits of granulomatous inflammation, containing fungus elements, were detected in the peritracheal tissue, and in individual birds also in the lungs. Litter contaminated with Aspergillus was the source of infection.

Comparative susceptibility of the agents of adiaspiromycosis to imidazole derivatives in vitro.

Clotrimazole, econazole, ketoconazole and miconazole inhibited the growth of Emmonsia crescens and E. parva in vitro. Clotrimazole and econazole gave particularly low minimal inhibitory concentrations against the mycelial phase of the fungi, and minimal fungicidal concentrations of all four antifungals were about 2 to 4 times higher than the minimal inhibitory concentration. The adiasporic developmental phases of E. crescens and E. parva were slightly more sensitive to all the imidazole antifungals than the mycelial phases.

[Dermatomycosis in sheep caused by a rare strain of Trichophyton verrucosum].

In the group of sheep reared for blood collections the enzootic occurrence of dermatomycosis was found affecting the hair on the head and back. From the pathological material obtained from the lesions of twelve animals an identical strain of Trichophyton verrucosum was cultivated which differed from common isolates of this type macromorphologically. By its ability to grow in the medium without vitamin and by its thermotolerance this isolate resembled the physiological variety T. verrucosum Bodin 1902, var. autotrophicum Scott 1976. On the example of trichophytosis in the described sheep flock epizootological importance of foci of this infection is demonstrated in flocks where no immunopreventive precautions are taken.

Natural focus of microsporosis caused by Microsporum canis Bodin.

The authors discovered a natural focus of microsporosis caused by the dermatophyte Microsporum canis Bodin. An adult man and four children were afflicted by this dermatophytosis. Symptomatic and inapparent forms of the disease in the focus were also detected in several cats and dogs. Homeless cats were found to be the source of the causative agent and its permanent hosts. A chainlike transmission from these cats was triggered to home-kept cats and dogs and to family members of their owners. Both, the clinical picture of the disease and characteristics of the strains isolated corresponds with the published data. The authors summed up the evidence collected to date on the epidemiology of microsporoses caused by M. canis.

[Disseminated aspergillosis in a loon].

A case is described of generalized mycosis in a diver of the species Gavia arctica, caused by the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. The organism of the bird was so much damaged that the bird died. There is a detailed description of the mycological characteristics of the invading agent and a description of the histopathological changes in the primarily affected organ -- the lungs. Further, a survey is presented of the orders of freely living birds and birds in captivity in which aspergillosis has been detected.

Human Opisthorchis and Haplorchis infections in Laos.

A study of the epidemiology of trematode infections was carried out in Vientiane province, Laos, comprising examination of snails, fish, cats, and human stools. Opisthorchis viverrini cercariae were found in the snail Bithynia siamensis goniomphalus (Bithyniidae) and Haplorchis taichui cercariae in Tarebia granifera (Thiaridae). O. viverrini metacercariae were recorded in the flesh of 7 species of cyprinid fish; metacercariae of the heterophyid fluke Haplorchis taichui were found in 4 species of cyprinid fish and those of H. pumilio in 2 species. Cats from the same localities were infected with O. viverrini and 4 species of heterophyid flukes, frequently as multiple infections. The highest prevalence of small fluke eggs in human stools was recorded in the 20-29 years age group, particularly in males (90.4%). Three-quarters of human infections were light (less than 1000 eggs/g), the highest value (2975 eggs/g) being recorded in the 10-14 years age group. Identification of small flukes excreted by Laotian patients after treatment with praziquantel in Czechoslovakia revealed more cases with H. taichui than with O. viverrini. The results confirmed the simultaneous occurrence of O. viverrini and intestinal heterophyid flukes in the area studied.

New cryptosporidium genotypes in HIV-infected persons.

Using DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, we identified four distinct Cryptosporidium genotypes in HIV-infected patients: genotype 1 (human), genotype 2 (bovine) Cryptosporidium parvum, a genotype identical to C. felis, and one identical to a Cryptosporidium sp. isolate from a dog. This is the first identification of human infection with the latter two genotypes.

[The determination of the species specificity of Leishmania antibodies in different groups of human sera].

Species-specificity of two serological tests has been compared: Indirect immunofluorescence test and C-ELISA using antigens prepared of 7 Leishmania species of various groups of human sera, including sera from healthy donors; sera of patients with various tropical parasitoses; sera containing rheumatoid factor and antinuclear antibodies; sera of patients with visceral leishmaniasis (VL); sera of normal subjects arrived from regions endemic for VL; sera of students arrived in Czechoslovakia from various tropical countries endemic for leishmaniasis. It has been shown that C-ELISA (and EIA with corpuscular antigen), being highly sensitive techniques, are very promising for the identification of species-specific Leishmania antibodies. C-ELISA titres beginning from 1:800 and above may be considered as species-specific. With the titre 1:400, cross-reactions with antigens of various Leishmania species are observed.

[The functional characteristics of the ultrastructure of the outer membranes of opisthorchid eggs. 2. The mechanisms of egg retention on substrates].

The studies of the functional features of the ultrastructure of the outer membranes of Opisthorchis felineus and Clonorchis sinensis eggs have been continued. The variants of egg behavior on different substrates (artificial, natural, organic and inorganic) have been experimentally studied. It has been established that O. felineus and C. sinensis eggs retain on a number of substrates due to covering with microflora (e.g. fungus mycelium clinging to the rubbed surface of the egg outer membranes); sticking in the uneven surface of the substrate; catching in the uneven surface of the substrate; catching on microfibers of plant fragments. The features found are to a great extent caused by a complex comb-like structure of egg membranes and are interpreted in terms of the earlier unknown mechanisms of parasite adaptation (at the egg stage) facilitating its contact with molluscs--their intermediate hosts.

[The morphofunctional characteristics of the ultrastructure of the outer membrane of opisthorchid eggs. 1. The hatching of miracidia].

Some functional peculiarities of miracidia hatching from O. felineus eggs have been studied, using scanning electron microscope. The results were compared to the earlier data obtained by the method elaborated for the determination of opisthorchis eggs viability by stimulation of miracidia release in the artificial media. It is concluded that in the course of miracidia hatching the two release-stimulating factors (mechanical and chemical) are mutually complementing each other. First, the egg membrane is deformed, in which the radula of the mollusk host plays an essential role, then the process of chemical activation of the hatching gland is triggered and miracidia motor activity is stimulated. A complex comb-shaped structure of opisthorchis eggs outer membranes is associated with the necessity of long-term eggs survival in the water reservoirs and forms a light delicate carcass preventing the egg from deformation.
