The populations of T cells were studied in 46 patients with Kawasaki disease, separated into 2 groups: group I--11 patients with coronary aneurysms; and group II--35 patients with normal coronary arteries. Patients from both groups with early acute illness, before day 5, had a significant reduction in the population of OKT3+ (p less than 0.001), OKT4+ (p less than 0.02) and OKT8+ cells (p less than 0.002), but normal OKT4/OKT8 ratios compared with age-matched control subjects. These abnormal values quickly returned to normal levels during week 2 in patients with normal coronary arteries. In contrast, patients in whom coronary aneurysms developed within 3 weeks of the onset had an imbalance between OKT4 and OKT8 during week 2, characterized by a decrease in the number of OKT8+ cells and an increase in the number of OKT4+ cells, resulting in a high OKT4/OKT8 ratio (p less than 0.01). Three patients in whom large coronary aneurysms developed had ratios higher than 4.50. Follow-up analysis of T-cell subsets from individual patients with coronary aneurysms showed that the OKT4/OKT8 ratio during the acute stage was reduced during the convalescent stage (p less than 0.005). In contrast, the ratio in patients with normal coronary arteries was normal during the course of the illness. These observations suggest that an immune regulatory process operating in coronary aneurysm formation is present.
We present a new algorithm for the display of RNA secondary structure. The principle of the algorithm is entirely different from those currently in use in that our algorithm is 'object oriented' while current algorithms are 'procedural'. The circular RNA molecule of chrysanthemum stunt viroid was used as input data for demonstrating the operation of the program. The major interest of this method will be found in its potential use in simulation graphics of RNA folding processes.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae was isolated from pleural exudates of 2 children with pleuropneumonia. The organism was also isolated from cerebrospinal fluid of a child with meningeal manifestations and from the cerebrospinal fluid as well as pleural exudate of another child who died 21 days after onset of disease. More extensive attempts to cultivate M. pneumoniae from nonpulmonary sites are recommended.
Total IgE and specific IgE antibodies to common allergens were determined by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in children with Mycoplasma pneumoniae or respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections. The decrease of total IgE from the acute to convalescent phase was observed in 105 of 134 (78.4%) children with M. pneumoniae infection and in 40 of 49 (81.6%) of those with RSV infection. Similarly, many patients showed a decrease of the responses of specific IgE in the convalescent phase of the infections. The results indicated that these infections might alter the production of total IgE and IgE specific to common allergens unrelated to the infectious agents.
Allergic predisposition among infants with bronchiolitis was examined. The number of infants with serum IgE exceeding mean +1 SD was 31/70 (44.3%). The rate of positive radioallergosorbent test (RAST) scores of 1 or more to mites, egg white, or milk was 31/71 (43.7%) and that of scores over 2 was 11/71 (15.5%). Eosinophils and/or mast cells were found in their nasal smears on several occasions. These results indicated that allergic predisposition may be observed among infants with bronchiolitis.

Normal mammary gland growth and reproduction were examined in C3H/HeMei mice given caffeine as drinking water (500 mg/l tap water) after weaning on day 20 of age. Caffeine ingestion had little effects on any of the day of vaginal opening, body growth, pattern of estrous cycles, mammary gland growth and reproduction except for the rearing rate on day 12 of lactation. Five out of 12 mothers given caffeine lost all pups before day 12 and resulted in 51% of the rearing rate on that day, while that of the control was 91%. The rate did not change thereafter in either group. The results indicate that the chronic heavy ingestion of caffeine would induce the high mortality of pups during early stage of lactation.

Glomerular injury was produced in mice after a single LD50 intravenous dose of purified 100-pace snake venom (Agkistrodon acutus). Characteristic features in glomeruli where the venom was demonstrated immunohistochemically included cystic lesions of the capillary tufts, thrombosis, subsequent proliferative and sclerotic changes, and crescent formation. Venom was recognized immunohistochemically in the glomerular endothelium, visceral basement membrane, mesangium, epithelium, and Bowman's capsule. Venom transfer across the basement membrane or into cells required less than 2 hours. Within this period mesangiolysis occurred due to the protease activity of the venom. Cystic lesions with fibrin thrombi then developed, which were replaced by proliferative and sclerotic changes after 3 days. Crescent formation began within 48 hours and was completed within a few days. Microangiography revealed hemodynamic changes in the intrarenal vasculature after venom treatment. Immune complex deposition was not found in any tissue. The study demonstrates the moderately constant potency (LD50) of Agkistron acutus venom, and documents it as a useful tool for quantitative studies of renal lesions.
