Radiographic manifestations of Burkitt's lymphoma in American patients.

Radiographic manifestations of Burkitt's lymphoma in 40 American patients are presented. Pleural effusions were the most common intrathoracic abnormality and were correlated with abdominal ascites more often than with intrathoracic tumor. Tumor involved bone in four patients had intrinsic bowel involvement; nine instances were in the ileum. Intrinsic renal tumor was seen in only two patients. Both ultrasound and computed tomography were useful.

Computed tomography in adrenal tumors.

Computed tomography (CT) was used to evaluate 26 patients with a variety of adrenal lesions. Surgical proof was available in 22 patients and clinical confirmation with a variety of other studies in the other four patients. Nine patients ahd aldosterone-producing adrenal adenomas and CT correctly identified seven. Four patients had cortisol-producing adenomas and five patients had cortisol-producing carcinomas; CT identified each of these tumors. Prominent but normal shaped glands were seen in each of the four patients with adrenal hyperplasia. Adrenal metastases from malignant melanoma in two patients were identified. Only one of two pheochromocytomas in two patients could be seen on CT. CT is a noninvasive method of localizing adrenal tumors and may be helpful in distinguishing adenomas from adrenal hyperplasia.

Adenoma↗

Intraperitoneal contrast infusion for assessment of intraperitoneal fluid dynamics.

For patients undergoing intraperitoneal ("belly bath") chemotherapy, it is useful to verify the distribution of infusion fluid. For this reason, 10 patients were examined by computed tomography (CT) after intraperitoneal instillation of dialysate mixed with water soluble contrast material. The extent of intraperitoneal distribution was assessed, and in two patients filling defects, presumably representing tumor, were identified.

Abdominal CT in the evaluation of small cell carcinoma of the lung.

Upper abdominal CT scans were performed on 45 consecutive patients with biopsy proven but previously untreated small cell carcinoma of the lung. Evidence of metastases was found in 16 (36%) patients. The most common site of metastases was the liver (27%). CT had a sensitivity of 88% and specificity of 94% as compared with biopsy results. Evidence of retroperitoneal metastases was found in seven (16%) patients.

Adrenal Gland Neoplasms↗

Retrorenal cysts.

Three patients are presented in whom computed tomography incidentally demonstrated low density masses posterior to, but separate from, the right kidney. In two, these were proven to represent unilocular cysts, and the third is presumed cystic. Possible etiologies are discussed.

Noninflammatory gas formation following embolization of adrenal carcinoma.

Gas formation as a result of transcatheter tumor embolization has recently been observed by conventional radiography. We report the computed tomography identification of similar benign gas formation following transcatheter embolization of a large adrenal carcinoma. Computed tomography should be the most sensitive method available for detecting gas formation. It is important to recognize this gas formation as a consequence of embolization and cell necrosis rather than as an indication of an inflammatory complication.

Adrenal Gland Neoplasms↗

Adrenal cortical tumors with low attenuation coefficients: a pitfall in computed tomography diagnosis.

Four cases of adrenal tumors with unusually low attenuation coefficients are reported. The tumors presented with values ranging from 8 to 17 EMI units (EU: 500 scale) instead of the expected 30 to 40 EU range of the remainder of our adrenal tumors. Two of these patients had primary aldosteronism and two had Cushing's syndrome. An unusually high lipid content may be responsible for the lucent appearance.

Adrenal Cortex Neoplasms↗

Detection of subcutaneous metastases by computed tomography.

Subcutaneous fat provides excellent contrast for water density tissue. Five patients with subcutaneous metastases visualized on computed tomography (CT) scans are presented. In some cases, CT proved to be the optimal diagnostic modality for visualizing these lesions and documenting their response to therapy.

Adult↗

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome: radiographic manifestations including cystlike lesions of the phalanges.

The radiographic findings in 25 patients with the nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome are presented. Cystlike lucencies of the phalanges, a previously unreported finding, were seen in 46% of the patients in whom hand films were obtained. Mandibular cysts, present in 42% of cases, and exuberant intracranial calcifications were also characteristic features. Brachymetacarpalia, and rib and spine anomalies were also associated with the syndrome but are less specific findings.

Adolescent↗

Lymphography in surgically unresectable adenocarcinoma of the exocrine pancreas.

Bipedal lymphograms were performed on 28 consecutive previously untreated patients with biopsy proven and surgically unresectable carcinoma of the pancreas. Four of these patients had findings indicating lymph nodes metastases. In three of these 4 patients, the lymphogram provided the only evidence of metastatic disease. The information provided by bipedal lymphography may be useful in treatment planning.

Adenocarcinoma↗

Pseudotumor caused by gastric varices.

On upper-gastrointestinal examination a patient with cirrhosis of the liver was found to have prominent gastric varices presenting as a pseudotumor near the cardia. The diagnosis of varices was confirmed by gastroscopy and angiography. A correct diagnosis is necessary to avoid an ill-advised biopsy or unwarranted surgery.
