Visualization of ocular melanoma with N-isopropyl-p-[123I]-iodoamphetamine.

In a patient with ocular melanoma, scintigraphy with N-isopropyl-p-[123I]-iodoamphetamine [( 123I]IMP) clearly delineated the histologically proven ocular lesion. In a tissue distribution study, using the resected specimen, a significantly high accumulation of the radioactivity was confirmed in tumor tissue. Thus, [123I]IMP scintigraphy provided specific localization of an ocular melanoma.

Parathyroid adenoma imaged by gallium-67 citrate. A case report.

A parathyroid adenoma imaged by Ga-67 citrate in a 17-year-old man with primary hyperparathyroidism and a palpable solid tumor in the neck is presented. Although preoperative examination and intraoperative findings suggested a parathyroid carcinoma, histologic studies showed a parathyroid adenoma with predominant chief cell type.

Myocardial lesions and the alteration of atrial granularity in dystrophic mice.

Atria from dystrophic and non-dystrophic mice were examined by light and electron microscopy. Particular attention was paid to the granularity of the specific atrial granules and the development of the Golgi apparatus. At the light microscopic level, both a decrease in number and degenerative changes were recognized in the atrial cardiocytes, which were intercalated by increased connective and adipose tissues. At the electron microscopic level, the dystrophic atrial cardiocytes showed a variety of degenerative changes and a decreased number of granules; the impaired development of the Golgi apparatuses were noticed. A quantitative analysis revealed that the number of the granules per unit area in dystrophic cardiocytes was significantly smaller in both the right and left atria, and that the relative area occupied by the Golgi fields of the dystrophic was significantly smaller in the right atrium than in non-dystrophic controls. These findings indicate that the synthesis of atrial natriuretic polypeptide (ANP) is inhibited in dystrophic mice. It is suggested that the water and electrolyte imbalance known in dystrophic cases can be accounted for by the impaired secretion of ANP in the heart.

Electron microscopic study of mossy fiber endings of the hippocampal formation in El mice.

The effects of seizure activity on the mossy fiber endings of El mice were studied by electron microscopy. During epileptic seizures of El mice, the number of clear round vesicles (50 nm) in the mossy fiber endings of the hippocampal formation decreased, while the number of large densecore vesicles (100 nm) increased. In these endings, the large dense-core vesicles were scattered during the resting state, but after seizure activity they tended to accumulate together and attach to the presynaptic membrane. Omega-shaped profiles, which seemed to be due to exocytosis of the large dense-core vesicles, were seen in the presynaptic membrane.
