[Single photon emission computed tomography by using N-isopropyl-p-[123I]-iodoamphetamine and 99mTc-hexamethyl propyleneamine oxime in a patient with herpes simplex encephalitis].

Single photon emission computed tomographies (SPECTs) by using N-isopropyl-p-[123I-IMP]-iodo-amphetamine (123I-IMP) and 99mTc-hexamethyl propyleneamine oxime (99mTc-HM-PAO) were serially performed in a 70 yrs. old male with herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE), and the chronological changes of accumulations were studied. Accumulations of both 123I-IMP and 99mTc-HM-PAO increased initially, and then decreased with the stage of HSE being advanced. The sequential appearance of the lesion in HSE with 123I-IMP and 99mTc-HM-PAO SPECTs was as same as that reported previously by X-CT; beginning at the temporal lobe with eventually being spread to the occipital and frontal lobe. Furthermore, it was shown that findings of both SPECTs could reflect considerably the clinical features, and the laboratory data in central spinal fluid. Thus, 123I-IMP and 99mTc-HM-PAO SPECTs seemed to be a useful tool in the diagnosis, deciding of whether the treatment was suspended or continued, and clarifying the pathophysiology in HSE.

[BALF cell findings in patients with BOOP, particularly in comparison with UIP].

It is possible to differentiate to some degree to bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) of unknown etiology from idiopathic usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) on the basis of clinical symptoms, chest X-ray findings, pulmonary function test and blood gas findings, but in certain patients it can be difficult. Cell findings in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids (BALF) were compared between 8 patients with BOOP and 28 patients with UIP, both diagnosed histologically by open lung biopsy. Findings characteristic of BOOP included (1) an increase in the percentage of lymphocytes, (2) an increase in the percentage of eosinophils, and (3) a decrease in the OKT4+/OKT8+ ratio. These findings provide useful information in making a clinical diagnosis of BOOP and in evaluating proper steroid treatment in patients who unable to undergo open lung biopsy.

The ultrastructure of somatostatin-immunoreactive cell bodies, nerve fibers and terminals in the dorsal horn of rat spinal cord.

The distribution and ultrastructure of somatostatin-immunoreactive neurons, nerve fibers and axon terminals in the dorsal horn of rat thoracic spinal cord were studied by immunohistochemistry at both the light and electron microscopic levels. Somatostatin-immuno reactive neurons were predominantly observed in Rexed laminae I and II of the dorsal horn of spinal cord. Somatostatin-immunoreactive electron dense peroxidase material was concentrated in the Golgi apparatus and rough endoplasmic reticulum of the somatostatin-immunoreactive neurons, and was characteristically sparse in other regions of the cytoplasm. In the somatostatin-immunoreactive fibers and terminals, immunoreactive electron dense material was concentrated in the microtubules and large synaptic vesicles.

Exocytotic features of rat specific atrial granules.

To clarify the mode of secretion of specific atrial granules, rat atrial muscle cells were examined by transmission electron microscopy. Atrial granule formation and exocytotic features of granules were clearly seen. Abrupt breaks in the unit membrane structure of mature granules were observed in thin sections, but these breaks were not detected in freeze-fracture replicas. These findings support the concept that the granule contents are released to the extracellular space by exocytosis.

Light and electron microscopic observation of specific atrial granules using water-miscible resin as an embedding medium.

A mixture of glycol methacrylate (GMA) and Quetol 523 was examined as an embedding medium for atrial tissue to be selectively stained for specific atrial granules. Semi-thin sections of rat atrial tissue embedded in this resin were stained with lead hematoxylin and observed under a light microscope. Atrial granules were found to be specifically stained blue black with lead hematoxylin. The same semithin sections stained with OsO4 vapor were examined electron microscopically and the atrial granules could be distinguised clearly from other cytoplasmic components. The GMA-Quetol 523 mixture is a useful embedding medium for studying the distribution of specific atrial granules by light and electron microscopy.

Ultrastructure of monoaminergic terminals in the intermediolateral nucleus of the cat spinal cord.

Monoaminergic innervation of the intermediolateral nucleus of the cat spinal cord was investigated by fluorescence histochemistry and electron microscopy. Large numbers of monoaminergic terminals were labeled by prior administration of the false neurotransmitter 5-hydroxydopamine (5-OHDA). Ultrastructurally, 5-OHDA-labeled terminals fell into three types. Type I, which made up 55% of the labeled terminals, contained abundant, large and densely labeled vesicles and only a few small and unlabeled vesicles. This type was "bouton de passage". Type II, which made up 40% of the terminals, made asymmetrical synaptic contacts with typical postsynaptic structures. This type contained many small vesicles, some of which were labeled, and a few large dense-core vesicles. Type III, which made up 5% of the terminals, made close contact with presynaptic nerve endings containing abundant small unlabeled clear vesicles. The type III terminals contained many large and densely labeled vesicles and a few small flattened vesicles, most of which were unlabeled.

[Detection of varicocele by using 99mTc-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid human serum albumin (99mTc-DTPA human serum albumin)].

In order to detect the varicocele, scrotal scintigraphies by using 99mTc-HSA-D were performed in 14 patients with male infertile or palpable mass in left scrotum on physical examinations. Abnormal pooling of 99mTc-HSA-D, indicative of varicocele lesion, could be found in left scrotum in 9 cases, confirmed surgically or clinically. Compared with 99mTc-HSA, 99mTc-HSA-D was superior in high uptake ratio of varicocele to soft tissue and in nonvisualization of bladder. Thus, 99mTc-HSA-D scrotal scintigraphy seemed to be of a great use to detect the varicocele.

[Clinical usefulness of a dual photon absorptiometry system using X-ray for peripheral bone--comparison with a single photon absorptiometric system].

A newly developed dual photon absorptiometry system (DCS-600, ALOKA Co., LTD.) using two monochromatic X-rays for the determination of bone mineral in the peripheral bone was fundamentally studied, in comparison to single photon absorptiometry system (SPA). The accuracy and precision in DCS-600 were equal to or better than SPA system. Furthermore, in DCS-600 the forearm could be imaged, and the manipulation was easy. Thus DCS-600 was found to be a good instrument as a quantifying system of bone mass.
