[Histological studies of multiple subperitoneal nodules produced by prolonged administration of estrogen (author's transl)].

It has been reported that multiple peritoneal fibroids were produced in guinea pigs treated with large doses of estrogens, and the nodules regressed when the steroid stimulant was discontinued. Recently, these experimental nodules were considered to be simulating the disseminated pattern of Leiomyomatosis Peritonealis Disseminata (LPD). Although these experimental nodules were considered to be composed of fibroblasts by light-microscopic studies, LPD was verified to be composed of smooth muscle by electronmicroscopic studies. Therefore, it is indispensable to study these experimental nodules by electronmicroscopy, when we discuss about the similarities between experimental nodules and LPD. Guinea pigs were treated with various doses of estradiol benzoate (E) [40, 80, 100, 200 microgram/day, thrice a week, intramuscular injection]. After treatment for three months, every dose of E produced the lesions simulating the disseminated pattern of LPD: multiple nodules in various sizes, scattered on the surface of the uterine horn, peritoneum, spleen and pancreas, and in the omentum and mesocolon. Ultrastructurally, the nodules were composed of the cells resembling fibroblast. We conjectured that estrogen differentiates and proliferates the cells of the features of fibroblast-like cells from subcoelomic mesenchyme, resulting in the production of multiple superitoneal nodules simulating the disseminated pattern of LPD.

[Studies of solid ovarian tumors in Tokai District (author's transl)].

The prognosis of patients with ovarian carcinoma is believed as worst among malignant diseases in the field of gynecology. Multiple factors including clinical stage, histologic type and grade may play an important role in the prognosis of patients. Because of these factors and the few cases of ovarian carcinoma seen in any one center over a short period, the ability to make valid evaluation of these factors has been limited. We organized ovarian tumor studying group in Tokai district with eleven member hospital and analyzed 453 cases of solid ovarian tumor retrospectively. 1) Cumulative survival rate was calculated according to the clinical stages. Five year survival rate of stage 1 was about 80%, that of stage 2 was about 30% and that of stage 3 and stage 4 were around 10% respectively. 2) Cumulative survival rate was calculated according to histologic types. There was minor variation of survival by histologic types. When we compared with different histologic types by same clinical stages such as stage 1 and stage 3 there was no definite differences of survival rate except slightly poor prognosis in case of mucinous cystadnocarcinoma. 3) Cumulative survival rate was calculated according to histologic grading. Histologic grade affects the prognosis of patients with ovarian carcinoma.

Picosecond fluorescence lifetime of the coenzyme of D-amino acid oxidase.

Conformational difference surrounding the coenzyme, FAD, of D-amino acid oxidase (D-amino-acid:O2 oxidoreductase (deaminating), EC 1.4.3.3) between its monomeric and dimeric forms were examined by observing fluorescence of FAD. The fluorescence lifetimes of the coenzyme was measured directly with a mode-locked Nd:YAG laser and a streak camera in picosecond region. The values of lifetime of FAD fluorescence in the monomer and dimer were 130 +/- 20 ps and 40 +/- 10 ps, respectively. The relative quantum yield of the fluorescence of FAD combined with the protein to that of free FAD depended on the concentration of the enzyme; it was higher at lower concentration. Comparing the lifetime with relative quantum yield of FAD combined with the protein, it is concluded that the fluorescence is quenched mostly by a dynamic process. These results indicate that the distance between the isoalloxazine nucleus and a quencher is nearer in the dimer than in the monomer.

Leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata.

The ninth documented case of leiomyomatosis peritonealis disseminata (LPD) combined with pregnancy is presented. Light and electron microscopic studies revealed that the smaller tumors were composed partly of decidual cells and partly of fibroblasts, and the larger tumors contained cells resembling smooth muscle cells. Plasma steroid levels were determined during pregnancy. Estrogen levels were within normal range, but progesterone levels were lower than normal, resulting in relative hyperestrogenism. In the case presented, pregnancy, especially with relative hyperestrogenism, may have been a major cause of LPD.

Clinicopathological study of coxsackie B viral myocarditis.

Autopsy cases of myocarditis caused by Coxsackie viruses in two infants, aged 5 years and 10 months and 12 years, and two adults, aged 24 years and 45 years, were presented. Of the four cases, three revealed a rise in serum neutralization titer to Cox B,4 virus and one to both Cox B2 and Cox B4 viruses. Compared with the adult cases, the 2 infant cases showed less inflammatory response with relatively prominent hypertrophy in the heart. Both of the adult cases revealed intensive inflammatory reaction. Extensive inflammatory cell infiltration remained in one of the adult cases though the case survived about 4 years after manifestation of the infection, suggesting possible involvement of immunological factors.

Generalized cytomegalic inclusion disease in neonates and infants.

Cytomegalic inclusion disease (C.M.I.) is caused by the salivary gland virus which is species-specific, and characterized by formation of inclusion-bearing cells in various organs. From the view point of spreading, it is divided into the localized and generalized type. We studied 18 generalized cases of infants in whom inclusion-bearing cells were detected in more than three organs. As to the portal of entry and the time of infection, cytomegalic inclusion disease can be classified into three subgroups in infants; congenital form (2 cases), early acquired form (8 cases) and acquired form with other debilitating diseases (8 cases).

[The effect of human cord plasma on the incorporation of 3H-thymidine by PHA-stimulated peripheral blood lymphocytes of cervical cancer patient (author's transl)].

It has been proposed that human cord plasma can suppress the PHA response of adult lymphocytes. To compare the suppressive effects between plasma from cancer patients and human cord plasma, we investigated the PHA responses of lymphocytes which were sampled from patients with various stages of cervical cancer and cancer free women, by adding cancer auto-plasma, human cord plasma and control plasma. The PHA responses of normal lymphocytes cultured with plasma from patients with 2nd and advanced stage of cancer were suppressed, but they were not suppressed by the plasma from O-I stage of cancer. The addition of control plasma enhanced PHA responses of lymphocytes of the 2nd and advanced stage of cancer, but no changes were observed in the lymphocytes from O-I stage of cancer. These results suggest that inhibitory factor does not appear in the plasma from the patients with O-I stage of cervical cancer. Human cord plasma moderately suppressed the PHA responses of normal lymphocytes; it also suppressed the PHA responses of lymphocytes from O-I stage of cancer. However, the PHA responses of lymphocytes from 2nd and advanced stage of cancer were improved significantly. Cord plasma may have a factor which promotes the PHA responses of lymphocytes from advanced cancer.

Studies on the accessory reproductive organs in the drake. 1. Addition to semen on the fluid from the ejaculatory groove region.

This study was performed to clarify whether the semen from the vasa deferentia is diluted with a fluid before ejaculation and to locate the ejecting region of the fluid. Vas deferens semen, ejaculated semen and the fluid ejected from the ejaculatory groove region were obtained from the drake and their characteristics were determined. The mean concentration of ejaculated semen, 9.46 millions/mm.3, was nearly half as much as that of ampulla semen (semen contained in the dilated portion of the vasa deferentia; 20.40 millions/mm.3), and the former had positive aldose color reaction in contrast with complete negative reaction in the latter, suggesting that ampulla semen might be diluted twofold with a fluid containing aldose before ejaculation. The aldose positive fluid was observed to be ejected from the ejaculatory grove region of the cloaca and it could be collected from the vasectomized drake using an artificial vagina. Thus, the ejaculated semen of the drake, about 0.4 ml. in volume, was considered to be a mixture of the semen ejected from the vasa deferentia (estimated to be about 0.2 ml.) and the fluid ejected from the ejaculatory groove region (about 0.2 ml.). The pH value, glucose content and electrophoretic pattern of protein of the ejecting fluid were similar to that of blood plasma, and it was assumed that the fluid might be a fluid of blood origin.

Studies on the accessory reproductive organs in the drake. 2. Macroscopic and microscopic observatorys on the cloaca of the drake with special reference to the ejaculatory groove region.

The anatomical structure of the ejaculatory groove region (EGR) of the drake was investigated macro- and microscopically in connection with its function. The EGR covers a part of the urodeum and the second fold of the cloaca. The EGR is unique to the males and is characterized by red colored appearance and less smooth surface of the mucosa. The mucosa of EGR forms folds giving less smooth surface to it and is lined with psuedostratified columnar epithelium. A vascular layer which contains many capillaries and lymphocytes and gives red color to the mucosa lies just beneath the epithelium. The EGR develops at puberty together with the developments of the testis and the penis. Blood supply and the arrangement of the lymphatic sinuses of EGR were described and their functions were discussed.
