[Pathogenicity factors of Corynebacterium diphtheriae circulating in the Primorski region under conditions of mass immunization of population].

The study of the main pathogenicity factors of C. diphtheriae (adhesive activity, toxigenicity, detection of tox+ gene) circulating in the Primorski Territory has been made. As revealed in this study, at the period of declined epidemic process due to mass immunization of the adult and child population against diphtheria the selection of C. diphtheriae strains with weak toxigenicity and low adhesiveness was observed. No strains having tox+ genes have been detected among C. diphtheriae nontoxigenic strains circulating in the Primorski Territory.

[The immunomodulating action of mytilan in an experimental influenza infection].

The materials characterizing the immunomodulating activity of mytilan, a bioglycane from an industrial object of Japanese sea, Crenomytilus grayanus, in experimental influenza infection are presented. The preparation protected up to 60% of mice intranasally inoculated with influenza virus, and significantly inhibited influenza virus reproduction. It induced interferon (possibly gamma IF) synthesis in low titres. The immunomodulating effect of mytilan consisted in stimulation of specific antibody genesis, enhancement of chemotaxis, increasing oxidation-reduction activity, enhancement of expression of Fc gamma-receptors by splenocytes and macrophages, enhancement of antibody-dependent spleen cell cytotoxicity, increased activity of natural killer cells, as well as increased complementary activity of blood serum and enhanced expression of C3 receptors by mouse spleen cells.

[The effect of translam on the immune response of irradiated mice].

Experimental facts about influence of new beta-1-3;1-6-glucan, extracted from seaweed Laminaria, on immune response of mice are summarized. The ability of translam to increase the number and functional activity of immunocompetent cells taking part in humoral immune response formation. The possibility of translam using for treatment and prophylaxis of radiation affections is discussed.

[The lectin activity of mytilan, a bioglycan from mussels, and its effect on microbial adhesion to macroorganism cells].

One of the mechanisms of the protective action of a bioglycan isolated from the mantle of mussels of the species Crenomytalus grayanus in bacterial infections has been studied. The preparation under study has been found to possess the activity of galactose-specific lectin and considerably decreases the adhesive properties of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The results of this investigation open prospects for further study of this bioglycan as an agent preventing bacterial colonization in infectious diseases.

[The effect of translam on the natural resistance indices of the irradiated organism].

It has been studied the influence of translam-beta-1,3; 1,6-glucan, extracted from seaweed Laminaria, on the isolation of E. coli from spleen and on the functional activity of peritoneal macrophages of sublethal irradiated and infected mice. It has been shown the reduction of the number of microbes, isolated from spleen and stimulation of ingestive and digestive activity of macrophages following the introduction of translam in mice. This results show about the increase of natural resistance of irradiated organism under translam action and characterise this glucan as effective stimulator of immunity.

[The pathogenetic importance of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis lipopolysaccharide].

The immunogenic and immunomodulating properties of Y. pseudotuberculosis lipopolysaccharide (LPS) with a view to the evaluation of its role in the pathogenesis of Y. pseudotuberculosis infection were studied. The study revealed the importance of LPS as immunogen, the degree of its immunogenicity for laboratory animals and interstrain differences in the response of mice to LPS in the course of immune processes. The role of the immunomodulating activity of LPS with respect to humoral and cellular immunity factors was shown in pathogenesis. Special attention was paid to the stimulating action of LPS on the phagocytic function of macrophages. The hypothetic scheme of the participation of LPS in the pathogenesis of Y. pseudotuberculosis experimental infection was presented.

[The role of the complement system in the pathogenesis of yersinioses].

In 95 patients with Yersinia infections (yersiniosis and pseudotuberculosis) the character of changes in the complement system was studied, taking into account the functional activity of C1-C5, Co. The study demonstrated a decrease in the activity of the complement system in the dynamics of Yersinia infections and revealed quantitative changes of characteristics in yersiniosis and pseudotuberculosis. The results of the study suggest the mobilization of the complement system in Yersinia infections by the classical path of activation. Regularities of changes in the activity of C1-C5, Co, corresponding to the severity and clinical variants of Yersinia infections, make it possible to recommend the use of the above-mentioned parameters in the clinic of infectious diseases for evaluating the effectiveness of treatment and the course of the disease.

[Immune complexes and R-proteins in yersinioses].

The intensity of the catabolism of cell receptors in yersiniosis patients has been studied. The dynamics of R-protein level reflects the relapsing character of the pathological process irrespective of the presence of clinically pronounced relapses and the form of the disease. The concentration of circulating immune complexes is elevated during the whole course of the disease and does not depend on its gravity and clinical form. The spectrum of immune complexes in the blood sera of yersiniosis patients is heterogeneous and changes in the course of the disease.

[Yersinia pseudotuberculosis sensitivity to fluoroquinolones and the efficacy of pefloxacin in experimental pseudotuberculosis].

The sensitivity of Y. pseudotuberculosis of different origin and plasmid profile to Russian preparations of the ftoroquinolones group (cyprofloxacin, pefloxacin, norfloxacin) was studied. Of the 3 preparations under study, pefloxacin was found to be most active with respect to Y. pseudotuberculosis. The absence of relationship between antibiotic resistance in 4 Y. pseudotuberculosis strains to cyprofloxacin, pefloxacin and norfloxacin and their additional conjugative R-plasmid with molecular weights of 32 and 38 mD was noted. Pefloxacin was shown to give a good sanitation and protective effect in experimental pseudotuberculosis.

[Collective immunity to diphtheria in the children and adolescents of Vladivostok during a mass immunization against this infection].

The state of collective immunity to diphtheria in children and adolescents of Vladivostok was studied. Adsorbed DPT vaccine was shown to have higher immunological effectiveness in comparison with adsorbed DT toxoid with reduced antigen content. As revealed in this study, as early as in 2 years a part of the children lost their immunity, irrespective of the preparation used for vaccination, and enlarged the reserve of initially seronegative children and adolescents, capable of maintaining the epidemic process of diphtheria.

[Antiprotease and immunostimulating effect of peptide components isolated from cuticle of the chicken stomach].

Peptides with molecular weights of 0.8 to 16 kDa were isolated from the keratinous envelope of chicken muscular stomach cuticle. The peptide preparation had a immunostimulating activity whose qualitative and quantitative traits made it comparable with the activity of known drugs of similar composition. In addition, the peptide preparation reversibly inactivated trypsin and activated chymotrypsin. A low-molecular-weight protein (14.1 kDa) was isolated from the peptide preparation by affinity chromatography on trypsin-Sepharose 4B. This protein was found to be a reversible noncompetitive inhibitor of trypsin.
