Karyological studies of bovine pancreatic flukes (Eurytrema sp.) and their phenotypes.

Chromosomes of gonadal tissues from pancreatic flukes of bovines were examined using air-drying techniques. Detailed karyological analyses on somatic cells with 26 chromosomes demonstrated the existence of two different karyotypes in these flukes. In conventional Giemsa preparations, two (Nos. 5 and 7) of 13 pairs of homologs showed a significant variance of morphology between flukes designated Types I and II by size. Additional differences were demonstrated by the C-banding method. The C-banded pattern in Nos. 3 and 8 of each karyotype was different, thereby indicating a different distribution of constitutive heterochromatin on these chromosomes. Among flukes recovered from seven cattle, 76.7% of the flukes were Type I (smaller) and 23.3% were Type II (larger). Obvious phenotypic variance between Types I and II was seen in the taxonomic characteristics such as body size, comparative size of the ventral to the oral sucker, and the egg size. Considering the variance of both types, as based on the statistical data of these characteristics and on comparable published data, at least two species of flukes can be found in the Japanese bovine pancreas. These were Eurytrema coelomaticum for Type I and E. pancreaticum for Type II, respectively.

[Mental disorders in Japanese living in Paris].

This paper relates the original work of a group of seven young Japanese psychiatrists during their residentship or their foreign assistant function in Paris. During approximately 3 years, they devoïd a part of their activity to assist their japanese copatriots who having developed some mental health accidents during they stay in the district of Paris. From the 28 patients, 15 have been hospitalized in different psychiatric wards of Paris but the french psychiatrists did not take part of the paper. The authors have divided their clinical material into 3 groups of japanese patients: tourists, permanent residents or temporary residents who represents 2/3 of the whole. In each group the incidence of nosographic diagnosis is precise and the transcultural problems are underlined. Finally, all the patients has been sent back to Japan.

[CT diagnosis of cancer of the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas].

Differential diagnosis between hepatoma and metastatic liver cancer, it is useful that CT image is classified into 7 types. Angiographic-CT, in which a catheter was inserted into the common hepatic artery, could reveal a liver tumor with diameter of 3--5mm. Bolus injection is important to find small pancreatic cancer.

Sonographic appearances of small hepatic nodules without tumor stain on contrast-enhanced computed tomography and angiography.

PURPOSE: We report the sonographic appearances and pathologic findings for hepatic nodules 2 cm or smaller that were detected by sonography but that did not produce a tumor stain on constrast-enhanced helical CT or digital subtraction angiography. METHODS: Sixty-six nodules 2 cm or less were found by sonography in 39 patients. Sonographically guided needle biopsies were done on all lesions. RESULTS: Twenty-seven nodules were benign nodules, 9 were borderline lesions, and 30 were hepatocellular carcinomas. Benign nodules were significantly smaller than hepatocellular carcinomas (mean size, 1.0 cm versus 1.4 cm, respectively; p <0.00001). Nodules 1 cm or smaller were more likely to be diagnosed as benign nodules (68%) than as either of the other types (32%; p = 0.01). A significantly greater percentage of hepatocellular carcinomas showed a heterogeneous pattern (64%) on sonography compared with benign nodules (25%) and borderline lesions (11%; p = 0.04). In nodules 1 cm or smaller, a homogeneous pattern (68%) was more common than a heterogeneous pattern (32%; p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The nature of small hepatic nodules cannot be determined with sonography. Thus, biopsy remains the only technique for obtaining a definitive diagnosis.
