[Behavior of the levels of free triiodothyronine, triiodothyronine, free thyroxine, thyroxine, thyrotropin and thyroxine-binding globulin in the serum of children with nephrotic syndrome].

Concentrations of free triiodothyronine, triiodothyronine, free thyroxine, thyroxine, thyrotropin, thyroxine-binding globulin, urea, creatinine, cholesterol and total protein were determined in serum of four children (ages from 8 to 16 years) with nephrotic syndrome undergoing therapy. The results showed that at serum protein concentration of less than 4.5 g/dl the concentration of free thyroxine was 3.35 +/- 2.32 pg/ml and that of free triiodothyronine 2.65 +/- 0.96 pg/ml. Elevation of the protein concentration to 4.5-5.7 g/dl lead to an increase in the concentration of free thyroxine to 6.53 +/- 3.69 pg/ml and of free triiodothyronine to 3.32 +/- 1.08 pg/ml. The age-matched reference values for free thyroxine are 15.72 +/- 1.9 pg/ml and for free triiodothyronine 5.10 +/- 1.29 pg/ml. The concentration of thyroxine, triiodothyronine and thyroxine-binding globulin were decreased whereas that of thyrotropin was elevated. Although free triiodothyronine and triiodothyronine were decreased they remained close to the normal range thus preventing apparent hypothyroidism. Improvement in the concentration of serum protein and cholesterol lead to an improvement of serum levels of thyroid hormones and thyroxine-binding globulin; concentrations of thyrotropin remained elevated.

[Reference values of sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, inorganic phosphate and magnesium levels in the cerebrospinal fluid of children].

Concentration of sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, inorganic phosphate and magnesium was determined in cerebrospinal fluid of 155 children (ages 1 month - 16 years). On the basis of clinical criterions the children were considered to be "healthy". The total number of examined children was 2 500 (1978-1983). The statistical age- and sexspecific investigation of the results showed no significant differences. Compilation of the values resulted in a physiological concentration of sodium 132.3 +/- 17.6 mval/l, potassium 2,59 +/- 0.37 mval/l, chloride 113.1 +/- 15.5 mval/l, calcium 3.47 +/- 1.45 mval/l, inorganic phosphate 1.11 +/- 0.21 mg/dl and magnesium 2.60 +/- 0.46 mg/dl.

[Comparison of the luminescence enhanced enzyme immunoassay Amerlite FT4/MAB-FT4 and Amerlite FT3/MAB-FT3 in blood serum of children. Reference values].

Concentrations of free thyroxine (n = 225, male = 124, female = 101) and free triiodothyronine (n = 60, male = 35, female = 25) were determined using the luminescence enhanced enzyme immunoassay methods Amerlite FT4/MAB-FT4 and Amerlite FT3/MAB-FT3 in blood-serum of children. In contrast to the excellent agreement of the results between the Amerlite FT4 and MAB-FT4 method, a significant difference was found between the Amerlite FT3 and MAB-FT3 results. Therefore it was necessary to establish new reference ranges for the MAB-FT3 method in childhood (cord blood = 50, n = 272, male = 183, female = 89).
