Two familial and sporadic cases of amyloid neuropathy are reported. Nerve biopsies ultrastructural studies permit to involve endothelial and Schwann cells basement membranes into formation of amyloid. This classical notion was worth being recalled and specified. The purpose of amyloid formation is searched in a toxico-metabolic processus possibly in relation with observed demyelinating mechanism. The Schwann cell is at the cross of the cause and of its effect.
Investigation of post mortem neurobiochemical changes is an important field in biological psychiatry which allows analyses of the analogies between peripherical markers and the central neurochemical processes they represent. Our study discusses the pathological neuroanatomy (collection and conservation of the anatomical specimens) and clinical criteria (selection of an evaluation and diagnostic scale, analysis of results of retrospective clinical interviews: "the psychological autopsy"). We also discuss the many methodological issues which arise in interpretations of these correlations. We wish to encourage others to apply a standardized methodology to these scientific studies of post mortem neurochemical parameters and retrospective clinical diagnosis.

The authors report the anatomical and clinical findings observed in a case of alexia iwthout agraphia due to left posterior cerebral artery infarction, in which there were lesions of the occipital and thalamic regions, the splenium of the corpus callosum, and the hippocampus. They discuss, more particularly, the memory difficulties, and the objects naming trouble.
Six hepatic angiosarcomas, one hepatoma and one hepatic "fibrosis" with portal hypertension in patients chronically exposed to vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) are reported. The industrial methods of synthesis and current knowledge concerning the carcinogenic role of VCM are reviewed. Histogenetic and pathogenetic concepts of "fibrosis" and angiosarcomas of liver are exposed.
Polyneuropathies associated with IgM monoclonal gammopathy (IgM-MG) are the most frequent types of peripheral neuropathies associated with monoclonal gammopathy. The pathogenic relevance of IgM-MG in peripheral neuropathies is supported by several arguments. The more significant are pathological data on nerve biopsies and the demonstration of IgM antibody activity to peripheral nerve antigens, mainly myelin-associated glycoprotein (MAG) and, sulfated 3-glucuronyl paragloboside (SGPG) and sulfated 3-glucuronyl lactosaminyl paragloboside (SGLPG). The objective of this study was to determine the performance characteristics of 3 immunoassays for detection of anti-myelin antibodies in neuropathy associated with monoclonal IgM gammopathy. Monoclonal IgM may show antibody activity to carbohydrate epitopes shared by several nerve specific antigens. Results obtained with three reliable assay systems, indirect immunofluorescence for antibodies to myelin sheaths (33%), thin layer chromatography for anti-SGPG/SGLPG antibodies (54%) and Western-blot for anti-MAG antibodies (39%). Comparing the different assay systems for carbohydrate structure present on both MAG and SGPG/SGLPG on myelin sheath, the thin layer chromatography appeared to be more sensitive and reliable than Western blot.
