Neuro-Behçet disease and magnetic resonance imaging.

A case of neuro-Behçet disease presenting the signs and symptoms of brain stem involvement was diagnosed with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), while a CT scan failed to show any abnormalities. These abnormal MRI foci were resolved in accordance with neurologic improvements by means of prednisolone therapy.

Incidence of atrophic gastritis with age in Japan and Canada.

With methylene blue dye spraying endoscopy 392 Japanese outpatients with gastric diseases, and 253 Japanese and 84 Canadian outpatients free of gross findings in the stomach were investigated on chronic atrophic gastritis in special reference to intestinal metaplasia. Second, with the same technique 176 asymptomatic healthy residents in Kyoto, Japan, were also investigated, in which 50 residents were followed for two years and 32 subjects for four years. In each population subjects, with increasing age the fundic-pyloric (F-P) border shifted cephalad indicating atrophy of the fundic mucosa. Japanese subjects, however, showed greater variation in location of the F-P border, and also greater in symptomatic outpatients than in asymptomatic healthy subjects. The reduction in fundic gland area with aging was followed by intestinal metaplasia. In addition, our follow-up study indicates that atrophic gastritis was most likely to advance gradually with increasing age, even in asymptomatic residents.

Induction of human leukocyte antigen-A,B,C and -DR on cultured human oligodendrocytes and astrocytes by human gamma-interferon.

gamma-Interferon (IFN-gamma) is known to induce expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II antigens on murine astrocytes and MHC class I antigens on murine oligodendrocytes. We studied whether the human IFN-gamma could induce the expression of Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA)-A, B, C and -DR antigens on cultured human glia from autopsied brain white matter tissue. HLA-A, B, C antigens were induced on both human astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, whereas HLA-DR antigens were induced only on some astrocytes. From these results, it is suggested that IFN-gamma affects the expression of MHC class I and class II antigens on astrocytes and oligodendrocytes derived from human brain. The relationship between the induction of MHC class I and class II antigens by IFN-gamma and the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis is discussed.

Genetic studies of red cell glutamic-pyruvic transaminase in some Japanese populations.

Comparative data on the allelic distribution of human red cell GPT were presented for inhabitants of isolated communities and individuals in the general population of Japan. In addition, a quantitative enzyme assay of the different phenotypes was carried out on some of the samples tested. The existence of two heterozygotes with a silent allele, Gpt0, appeared to be confirmed by pedigree analysis.
