[Surgical reduction of the kidney for inducing chronic kidney insufficiency].

By operative reduction of the renal tissue on 1/5 of both kidneys there are to be produced a chronic renal insufficiency in 21 black mini-pigs. The operative procedure was carried out at one time (nephrectomy and resection of the residual kidney) or at two times (in one group of it at first the nephrectomy and in the other group at first the resection of the kidney). Only 50% of the animals died with the symptom uremia in renal insufficiency. The nephrectomy--with a temporarily shifted resection of the residual kidney--effects the desired changes most approximately with very different reaction. This procedure appears as an animal model for the chronic renal insufficiency altogether not suitable.

Lysozyme (muramidase) and hemolytic complement (CH50U) in sera of beagle dogs and minipigs after longterm application of different preparations of estrogens and gestagens.

In studies for the chronic toxicity of estrogens and gestagens, lysozyme and hemolytic complement (CH50U) in sera of beagle dogs and minipigs were measured. Various doses of the sexsteroids were given: 0.01 mg, 0.1 mg and 1.0 mg/kg respectively. The influence of the steroids on the tested parameters after an application for 6 months was not significant, only in a single series with unphysiologically, high dosages of the preparations were some values changed significantly.

[Influence of the cecum, in geese fed diets containing urea, on N-metabolism and digestibility of nutrients and on urea concentration in excrements and blood].

Balance experiments were performed on six normal young geese and on six geese with a ligated caecum. The ration consisted of 43.25% barley, 30% sugar beet slices, 20% cellulose, 1.4% maize germ oil, 3% mineral mixture, 1% concentrate of vitamins and growth factors, 1.25% urea and 0.1% lysine. Daily nitrogen balance was similar in the two groups (average 1051 mg in the controls and 1090 mg in the experimental birds). Crude protein digestibility was 82.4 +/- 1.1% in the controls and 84.9 +/- 1% in the experimental birds (a significant difference). The bacterial flora of the caecum seemed to have no effect on crude fibre breakdown. Digestibility was quite low, averaging 5.7% in controls and 4.6% in experimental birds. The proportion of urea discharged in excreta was 50% in controls and 55.7% in experimental birds. Blood urea veraged 21.7 mg/100 g in controls and 22.8 mg in experimental birds (insignificant difference).

[Effect of long-term application of SUISYNCHRON-premix on swine].

Two groups of five female store pigs, weighing an average of 60 kg at the start of the experiment, were given either 1 or 10 mg metallibure zinc complex (SUISYNCHRON) per kg body weight once daily for six months, in the form of a 2% talcum premix added to concentrates. Clinical inspection, weight gain, haematological findings, blood sugar, serum transaminases, properties of urine and faeces, carcass examination and histological study (internal organs, endocrine glands, skeletal muscle) showed that the 1 mg/kg dosage had no toxic effect. The 10 mg/kg dosage resulted in considerable depression in appetite and some apathy in the pigs, but there was no evidence of a toxic effect.
