Evaluation of the participation of parietal peritoneum in dialysis: physiological, morphological and pharmacological data.

Bidirectional fluxes of Na+, K+ and Ca++ were estimated under in vitro conditions through isolated patches of rat peritoneal membranes (parietal and visceral). Morphological (TEM) and functional (changes in fluxes) data are presented to show that mesothelium lining the parietal peritoneum forms a barrier than limits diffusion of ions across this membrane. In addition, it was found that Furosemide and nitroprusside change the permeability of the mesothelium for sodium or potassium, respectively.

[Histopathology of erythema nodosum].

The histopathology of erythema nodosum is discussed with reference to the literature and of 19 cases of our clinic. There is a significant vascular involvement especially of the subcutaneous tissue. The veins and arteries are equally affected. The histological picture consists not only of an acute inflammatory process in the subcutaneous tissue, but also of inflammatory cells which area see to a lesser extent in the dermis. In many cases the typical small granulomatous foci of MIESCHER which are considered to be pathognomonic for erythema nodosum do not develop. In the cases which we examined we were not always able to tell from the histological picture how long the erythema nodosum had been present. Multinucleated giant cells which are often found in the septal connective tissue are seen even in relatively acute cases.

[Lichen sclerosus at atrophicus. First observation on a boy's genitalia].

First report of a case of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus of the genitals in a twelve-year-old boy. The beginning of this disease at the time of the first growth of his pubic hairs coincides with the activity of the gonads, demonstrating apparently the influence of sexual hormones. The meaning of this factor is stressed by the fact that until now not a single case of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus at a boy's genitals has been published in the literature, in contrast to the relative frequency of this disease in girls. The chromosomal analysis of the buccal smear however revealed a chromatin negative result.

A new method for evaluation of karyometrical measurements.

From karyometrical measurements performed by us and from investigations of other authors it results that the obtained values of nuclear volumes are smaller than real ones. This is caused by different sectioning planes of measured nuclei. Previously published corrections seem not to reflect the real error as they are based on the analysis of the circle, and not of the sphere. In the presented paper a method is given, which may be applicated to interpretation of the results of morphometrical measurements. The proposed method is based on the well known in statistical analysis 3o rule. The obtained results were applicated to a practical example.

[Pyoderma gangrenosum with IgG-paraproteinemia in plasmacytoma].

A 61 year old patient suffered from pyoderma gangraenosum combined with IgG-paraproteinemia and plasmocytoma. In recent years several papers mentioned the existence of paraproteinemia in patients with pyoderma gangraenosum. Until now only in two cases the association with plasmocytoma were reported. This is the third case of pyoderma gangraenosum combined with plasmocytoma.

The response of thyroid C-cell system in rat to long-term hypercalcemia.

Long-term hypercalcemia induced in rats by administration of vitamine D3 and CaCl2 for 60 days resulted in strong hyperplasia and hypertrophy of C-cells. The extent of hyperplasia varied greatly in individual animals. Histochemical reactions, especially the masked metachromasy with toluidine blue, demonstrated cell groups in which no reaction was observed beside those exhibiting a very strong reaction. Impregnation with silver according to Cajal showed a diminished number of argyrophilic granules in the C-cells, which had undergone hyperplasia. The reactions for non-specific esterases and cholinesterases were similar both in the experimental animals and in the controls. An enlargement of the C-cell nuclei in the experimental group was also pronounced. The total serum calcium level was only slightly increased in this group. It is concluded that the results of staining and the enlargement in nuclear volume of C-cells reflect the increased activity of these cells. Hyperplasia of the C-cells may represent a type of adaptation of the endocrine system in order to maintain calcium homeostasis.

[Afferents of vagus nerve to intercalary nucleus].

In 11 rabbits operations of intracranial transection of IXth and Xth cranial nerves and transections of vagal nerve on its several levels were performed. After survival 271-327 days karyometric investigations of neurons, astrocytes and oligodendrocytes contained in intercalary nuclei of both sides of medulla were performed. It was stated that after transection of the vagus nerve on the levels proximally to the arising of the recurrent laryngeal nerve the volume of cross-area of neurons and nuclei of astrocytes decreases on the operated side. The authors concluded that atrophic changes found in the intercalary nucleus may be probable of transsynaptic in character. It indicated, that intercalary nucleus receives afferents from the vagus nerve.
