[Arndt-Gottron scleromyxedema and associated phenomena].

Scleromyxedema is an uncommon fibromucinous connective tissue disease characterized by accumulation of mucinous material in the dermis. A monoclonal paraprotein is regularly identified. A review of the literature (57 cases) shows the exceptional association of scleromyxedema with multiple myeloma (8.7%) and macroglobulinemia Waldenström (3.5%). A man with scleromyxedema, IgG lambda paraproteinemia, and sclerodactylia--as a special sign of scleromyxedema--is reported. Melphalan is the drug of choice in serious cases, but not effective in sclerodactylia.

Ultrastructural localization of calcitonin in control and stimulated thyroid C cells of the rat using protein A-gold immunocytochemical technique.

Using anti-human calcitonin serum and a protein A - gold technique, calcitonin was localized at the ultrastructural level in control and calcium gluconate-stimulated thyroid C cells of the rat. In control rats calcitonin was detected within a majority of the secretory granules while in experimental animals it was demonstrated also within prosecretory granules present in Golgi apparatus.

Effect of 1-DOPA on calcitonin secretion by thyroid C cells.

After administering 1-DOPA for 7 d a decreased number of secretory granules as well as pronounced rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus were noted in C cells. A single dose of 1-DOPA did not inhibit C cell stimulation induced by a single dose of calcium gluconate. On the other hand, parallel administration of alpha-methyl-DOPA and calcium gluconate did not decrease the number of C cell secretory granules, which were observed after administration of calcium gluconate alone. The data suggest that the presence of DOPAmine (formed the 1-DOPA) in the secretory granules is a prerequisite for normal functioning of secretory processes in thyroid C cells.

[An unusual familial naevus verrucosus].

Report of an unusual verrucous nevus of the scalp which was seen in a 11 year old girl and her mother. The diagnosis was verified by histological examination. Therapy was only symptomatically.

Alterations in nuclear structure in dark cells of the collecting tubules in the kidney of castrated rats.

Following castration, the nucleus of the dark cells of the subcortical portions of the collecting tubules in the rat kidney showed two types of morphological alterations: 1) Decomposition of the nuclear membrane in a circumscribed area. This phenomenon is independent of the sex of the animal and becomes more frequent up to the 30th day after castration. Occasionally, decomposed nuclei can also be observed in controls. 2) Giant nuclear bodies. These inclusions occurred only in castrated males. Early stages were already observed at the 10th day after orchiectomy, whereas fully developed giant nuclear bodies could not be demonstrated until about the 20th day after castration.

Histochemical, autoradiographic and electron microscopic investigations of the renal proximal tubule of male and female rats after castration.

After castration of 90-day-old male and female rats, changes appear in the renal proximal tubule. A distinction can be made between early changes (up to 10th postoperative day) and later changes (20th-30th postoperative day). Between the 3rd and 5th day after castration the kidney of the females shows an increase in free estrogen receptors (biochemical studies) which are localized in the pars contorta of the proximal tubule (autoradiographic studies), while the male kidney shows a marked increase in urinary protein excretion up to the 10th day after castration. Proximal tubule changes detectable histochemically and electron microscopically do not appear until day 20 or 30 after castration. The results of castration are similar in segments S1 and S2. By days 20 and 30 after castration there is a decrease in the activity of lysosomal enzymes (acid phosphatase, acid beta-galactosidase). Electron microscopy shows a conspicuous decrease in the number of giant lysosomes (mainly in females) and apical vacuoles (mainly in males). A marked increase in the number of lysosomes is found in the S3 segment; females always have more lysosomes than males. The number of peroxisomes is also greatly increased; they appear circular in the females but can assume bizarre shapes in the males. Lipid droplets appear in the basal region of the tubule cell of segments S2 and S3 in the males. The sex differences are preserved in all segments even after castration and become even more pronounced in the S3 segment.

[Eye changes in xeroderma pigmentosum].

Report of a 5 year old Yugoslav girl with xeroderma pigmentosum. This disease was associated with ophthalmological symptoms such as photophobia, blepharospasm and a tumor of the cornea. Based on this case the ocular abnormalities in xeroderma pigmentosum are reviewed in the literature.

[Eosinophilic granulocytes in the inflammatory infiltrate in basaliomas and spinaliomas].

In this study the proportion of eosinophilic leukocytes was examined in fifty sections of basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. With the aid of the specific technique of Schaefer and Fischer it was easy to identify eosinophilic leukocytes. The proportion of eosinophilic leukocytes was found to be smaller than the supposed number seen in H. E. sections. There is no significant difference of the number of eosinophilic leukocytes between the middle and the periphery of the tumor.

[Electron microscopic studies in ulcerative colitis].

In 26 patients with the classical clinical picture of an ulcerous colitis and in 8 healthy control persons in the course of a rectoscopy in about 15 cm depth tissue was taken bioptically and underwent an electron-microscopic investigation. Moreover, enzyme-histological examinations were performed. Summarizingly, clear references to immune-pathological processes for development and course of ulcerous colitis are the result.

[Multiple basaliomas in pityriasis rubra pilaris].

This is a report of a 73 year old patient with pityriasis rubra pilaris and multiple basal cell carcinomas which especially appeared on the face. One of the tumors was located in the anal and perianal region. This is the first report of basal cell carcinomas in a patient with pityriasis rubra pilaris. Further observations will clarify whether there exists a closer relationship between the presence of basal cell carcinoma and pityriasis rubra pilaris. Therefore more attention should be paid to the existence of basal cell carcinoma in patients with pityriasis rubra pilaris.
