Duplication cyst of the duodenum in the adult.

A duodenal duplication cyst in a 45-year-old male is reported. A hypotonic duodenography showed a smooth spherical defect in the descending portion of the duodenum. A fiberoptic duodenoscopy disclosed a smooth well-defined tumor which was located orally from the ampulla of Vater. A retrograde pancreatocholangiography indicated the tumor was not in communication with the pancreatic duct or biliary tract. At operation, a cystic spherical mass, 3 cm in diameter, was located in the posterior wall of the duodenum corresponding to the above described diagnosis. The combination of a greater awareness of this condition as well as improved X-ray and endoscopic techniques has made preoperative diagnosis more accurate.

Effect of fluorescent products from reaction of malonaldehyde with phosphatidylethanolamine on lipids in plasma and liver of rats.

Effect of fluorescent products from the reaction of malonaldehyde with dipalmitoyl phosphatidylethanolamine on the content of lipids in plasma and liver of rats was examined, and the results are as follows: Growth of rats was suppressed by daily intraperitoneal administration of fluorescent products (10 or 50 mg/kg) for 7 days. Levels of triglycerides and total cholesterol in the plasma tended to decrease but that of phospholipids increased significantly by the administration of fluorescent products in a dose of 50 mg/kg/day. On the other hand, content of triglycerides in liver decreased by about 26% at a dose of 10 mg/kg and 23% at a dose of 50 mg/kg. Total cholesterol and phospholipids showed a slight diminution. Free fatty acid content in the liver was almost constant. Thiobarbituric acid values in the plasma and liver increased significantly by treatment with the fluorescent products, especially the values at a rate of increase were higher in the plasma than in the liver. No significant changes were observed in the relative fluorescence intensity between control animals and groups treated with fluorescent products. Serum lipoprotein patterns after Agarose gel electrophoresis revealed diffuse bands in the pre-beta and beta-regions.

Effect of lipid peroxidation on phospholipase A2 activity of rat liver mitochondria.

Effect of lipid peroxidation on phospholipase A1 activity was examined in rat liver mitochondria. Content of lipid peroxides in rat liver mitochondria was markedly increased in the presence of ascorbic acid (0.1 mM) and ferrous ion (40 muM, as compared to the control. Phospholipase A2 activity in mitochondria was activated by approximately 60% after lipid peroxidation. Mg2+-activated ATPase activity in mitochondria was markedly stimulated by about 200% following treatment with ascorbic acid and ferrous ion. There was no difference in calcium content of mitochondria before and after lipid peroxidation.

[The development of cerebro-spinal fluid pathway in human embryos (author's transl)].

The early development of the subarachnoid space, the choroid plexus, and the arachnoid villi was studied in 60 normal human embryos ranging from Carnegie stage 12 to 23. The embryos were fixed in Bouin's fluid, paraffin-embedded, serially sectioned and stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Azan. One abnormal human embryo with exencephaly and myeloschisis in the high cervical cord was added for the study. A primitive subarachnoid space (future subarachnoid space) is first distinguishable as cavity formation within the meninx primitiva in the areas ventral to the middle brain vesicle at stage 14. The development of the primitive subarachnoid space precedes the appearance of the choroid plexus. The primitive subarachnoid space appears earlier in the region ventral to the rhombencephalon than in the region posterior to the fourth ventricle. By stage 20, a primitive subarachnoid space almost completely surrounds the neural tube. A fairly-well developed primitive subarachnoid space was observed in the abnormal human embryo, in which the fourth ventricle was open to the amniotic cavity and the ventricular system was completely separated from the primitive subarachoid space. These findings imply that the extraventricular spread of fluid of choroid plexus origin is not an essential factors, and that probably it is not even an important factor, for the development of the subarachnoid space. The arachnoid villi dose not appear even at the end of the embryonal stage. Absorption of the cerebrospinal fluid in an embryo should be done by the way other than the arachnoid villi.

Suppression of luteinizing hormone in castrated women by the administration of human chorionic gonadotropin.

The suppressive effect of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) on luteinizing hormone (LH) and/or LH-beta was studied by specific LH-beta radioimmunoassay following hCG administration. Eight castrated women were each administered 10,000 IU of hCG in a single intramuscular injection and five women in the control group were injected with saline. The serum level of hCG increased after the injection, reaching 217.6 mIU/ml after 8 h. There was a significant suppression of LH levels as compared to those of the control group and the pre-injection levels: 68.2% 1 h after injection, 64.7% after 2h, 65.5% after 4 h, 77.0% after 8 h, 78.6% after 12 h, and 78.2% after 24 h. There was no significant suppression of the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) as compared to the preinjection and control values. Serum concentration of estradiol1 was not detectable either before or after the hCG injection. We conclude that hCG has a suppressive effect on LH and/or LH-beta secretion not mediated by estradiol.

Prenatal exposure to oral contraceptives and transposition of the great vessels in man.

The hypothesis that female sex hormones in the first trimester of pregnancy are causally related to transposition of the great vessels (TGV) was tested by a retrospective study of 135 cases of TGV ascertained through the British Columbia Health Surveillance Registry. During 1962-1972 there was no increase in the annual incidence rates of TGV. Analysis of questionnaires completed on 58 cases revealed no definite association between inadvertent use of oral contraceptives or other sex hormones during early pregnancy and TGV.

[Effects of linoleic acid hydroperoxide on the formation of lipid peroxide in the rat liver mitochondria].

An in vivo study was made on the effect of linoleic acid hydroperoxide on the formation of lipid peroxide in rat liver mitochondria, and results are as follows: There were no changes in contents of lipid peroxide and total sulfhydryl in rat liver mitochondria after daily administration of linoleic acid hydroperoxide (10 mg/kg, i.p.) for 3 or 7 days. Changes in the fatty acid composition in plasma and liver after i.p. administration of linoleic acid hydroperoxide for one week were not observed as compared to that of control animals. In addition, no appreciable change was found in the fatty acid composition of phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylinositol in liver mitochondria from rats treated with linoleic acid hydroperoxide. After treatment with linoleic acid hydroperoxide for 3 days, content of plasma triglycerides increased, but no effect was observed in liver triglycerides. However, plasma triglycerides returned to the control level and triglycerides in liver increased by treatment with linoleic acid hydroperoxide for one week. Free fatty acids decreased in plasma but not in the liver from rats treated with linoleic acid hydroperoxide for 3 or 7 days.

Fine structure of the pancreatic islets in domestic fowl with special reference to the cell type and secretion.

The pancreatic islets of domestic fowl were investigated by electron microscope. The following results were obtained. 1. The A islet is composed of a great many A cells and a few D cells. It also contained only a few B cells which are situated mainly along capillaries. 2. On the contrary, the B islet is composed of a great many B cells and a few D cells. It also contained only a few A cells in its periphary. 3. Immature secretory granules within the Golgi complex are almost the same in size, shape and density among the three types of islet cells. Since there are quite distinct differences in these properties of mature secretory granules in the cytoplasm among the three types of islet cells, there may be a difference in the mode of maturation process among the three. 4. These granules are released from the three types of islet cells through a mechanism termed as emiocytosis.
