Opioid receptors in the caudate nucleus can mediate EMG-recorded rigidity in rats.

Systemic administrations of opioids are known to induce "catatonia" or "lead pipe rigidity" in rats. The relevance of the caudate nucleus in inducing rigidity was tested. For this purpose, several opioids (or saline) were injected into the head of the caudate nucleus ("intrastriatal" injection) through an implanted cannula, and the electromyographical activity (EMG) was recorded in the gastrocnemius-soleus muscle (GS). Morphine (7.5-3.0 microgram), injected unilaterally, induced a continuous EMG activity in the ipsilateral GS muscle. This effect could be antagonized by systemic administration of naloxone (1 or 2 mg/kg i.p.). D-ala2-met5-enkephalinamide (3 microgram) and levorphanol (22.5 microgram) induced an EMG activity, too, whereas an equimolar dose of dextrorphan was ineffective, indicating that this effect was stereospecific and mediated via opioid receptors in the caudate nucleus. The EMG activity observed after systemic morphine administration (15 mg/kg i.p.) was antagonized by intrastriatal injection of naloxone (5 microgram). From our results, it can be concluded that the striatum--at least the head of the caudate nucleus--plays an important role in mediating the rigidity observed after systemic administration of morphine and other opioids.

Idiotypic regulation of the immune system. Common idiotypic specificities between idiotypes and antibodies raised against anti-idiotypic antibodies in rabbits.

Anti-idiotypic antibodies (Ab2) were raised in allotype-matched rabbits against anti-carbohydrate or anti-tobacco mosaic virus antibodies (Ab1). Several Ab2 were purified and injected into a third series of rabbits III which synthesized antiantiidiotypic antibodies (Ab3). Antigen was then given for the first time in those rabbits who had synthesized Ab3. The specific antibody synthesized in rabbits III was called Ab1'. Anti-idiotypic antibodies were raised against purified Ab3 antibodies (Ab4). In most cases, Ab1' antibodies are sharing idiotypic specificities with Ab1. Ab3 did not react with antigen but shared idiotopes with Ab1 and Ab1' because Ab4 antibodies, which are anti-idiotypes to Ab3 do recognize specifically Ab1 and Ab1' antibodies belonging to the same chain of immunization. It seems therefore that Ab3 looks idiotypically like Ab1 and Ab4 displays the same behaviour as Ab2. A general view of the functioning of the immune system is presented.

[Premature births with special reference to delivery management].

The 1055 premature births of the last 10 years in the Altdöbern women's hospital with a centre for premature births have been summarized and analysed in groups with regard to the distribution of birth-weight, the obstetric measures and the perinatal mortality. A change of the operative procedure at the premature birth together with a marked increase of the frequency of the operative deliveries from 28,7 p.c. (group I) to 55,1 p.c. (group III) has been compared to the uncleaned mortality of the premature children of 20,0. p.c. (group I) and 16,4 p.c. (group III). The importance of the large prophylactic measures and of the improved birth-supervision and maintenance of premature births are emphasized in connection with it. Inferences for a further reduction of the perinatal mortality are drawn.

Serum thyrotrophin determination on day 5 of life as screening procedure for congenital hypothyroidism.

In 327 newborns cord blood thyroxine (T4) was 11.8 +/- 0.4 mug/100 ml (SEM) (151.9 +/- 5.1 nmol/l), and serum thyrotrophin (TSH) 6.7+/-1.0 muU/ml. Variability was marked for both T4 and TSH. Remeasured in the same patients on the fifth day of life, the TSH level was 3.7 +/- 1.0 muU/ml, lower than at birth (P less than 0.001), while scattering of TSH values was much smaller, with 99.4 % of values less than 12 muU/ml...

[Simultaneous extra- and intrauterine pregnancy with the birth of a healthy child].

Report on the occurrence of a simultaneous intra- and extrauterine pregnancy. A live, mature infant was born at term. At the time of the operation of the ectopic pregnancy there was diagnosed the intrauterine pregnancy. The possible cause of a simultaneous intra- and extrauterine pregnancy are analysed and the clinic and diagnosis emphasized. In case of not having a child-wish the authors take into consideration a routine curettage of the uterus at the time of the operation of the ectopic pregnancy.

Management of herpes simplex virus type 1 pneumonia following liver transplantation.

Interstitial pneumonia caused by Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a severe complication of orthotopic liver transplantation (LTX). The records of patients were reviewed who had an LTX at the age of 16 years or older between 1991 and 1994 with a mean follow-up of 21 months (range, 10 to 44 months). Six patients were included who had fever of > 38 degrees C, deterioration of arterial blood gases, radiological evidence of interstitial pneumonia and proof of HSV-1 in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. All patients were anti-HSV-IgG positive before LTX. All patients were successfully treated with intravenous acyclovir, mechanical ventilation and reduced immunosuppression. Three patients who received cyclosporin A had a rejection which was successfully treated by switching to FK 506. Four patients were discharged in good health. One patient died 36 months after LTX of an unrelated cause. One patient died of urosepsis on postoperative day 139. Acyclovir together with mechanical ventilation and reduced immunosuppression proved to be an effective treatment for HSV-1 pneumonia following LTX.

Non-clinical intramammary infection in lactating ewes and its association with clinical mastitis.

A bacteriological survey for the study of non-clinical intramammary infection in the sheep udder was carried out in 88 Assaf ewes. A mean infection prevalence in the first few weeks of lactation was 55%. The most common bacterial isolates were Micrococcus spp. followed by coagulase negative staphylococcus, together accounting for 93% of the total number of isolates. An infection prevalence of 54% was found in ewelambs 2 days after their first lambing, indicating a marked new infection rate around lambing. Generally, the course of lactation was characterized by dynamic changes of new infection and spontaneous resolution. About 5% of half udders examined developed clinical mastitis. The comparison of bacteriological data from mastitic milk samples and from samples taken from the same half udders before the appearance of the clinical disease could not support the theory that in sheep, mastitis is a clinical exacerbation of a non-clinical intramammary infection.
